best little dog for suburbs

Skitch

Recommended Posts

I live in a suburb with a nice little fenced in yard. We have 3 kids - 10, 8 and 3 and we're finally taking the plunge and getting a puppy. We want something small and it will probably be pretty much a house dog. Any breed suggestions?

If you are committed to smaller dogs, we had Shelties when I was a teen and they were great dogs.

If you are willing to consider a bigger dog, you will not find a more loving dog, or more gentle with kids than a Great Dane.

I'm definately committed to the smaller dog. It just wouldn't be fair for a bigger dog in our yard. I did have a buddy with a Great Dane growing up and it was a great dog but I just don't have the room. The Welsh Corgi is on my short list but would like to hear some more suggestions.

You have got to be doing that on purpose...

And Skitch, you should also seriously consider a Greyhound. They're sweet, quiet, don't shed, don't smell, and will be the kindest most loving dog you could ask for. They don't care about a small yard; they'd rather just lay around a be a couch potato.

A rescue organization can help match a retired racer to your family.

Just a thought...
I got 3..a Rott mix which is getting old..a Aussie mix and a 8lb Pomeranian. Go Pom.....they are smart and make great watch dogs. ;)
Poms are the most annoying pieces of shit on earth. Always yip yip yipping, never stfu-ing... I wouldn't recommend one, even to an enemy.

My recommendation - get a cat. Small dogs suck.

Ok that doesn't really help I guess. My grandparents have a Boston Terrier, and it's a pretty cool dog. But I'd still rather have a cat by a long shot.

Word.

And sometimes, you can get a cat bigger than many small dogs...

Rupert (the big one on the right), is 19 lbs and still growing. And he's not fat, either.

The one on the left is 15 lbs, just to give some perspective...

As long as he doesn't lick my kid's faces immediately after. There's a certain amount of time that has to elapse after he's licked his ass whereby you forget he licked his ass and don't go "ewww" and grab the baby wipes when he slurps all over your kids mouth because the child lets him and doesn't know any better.
Especially a slobbery dog like a boxer, and ESPECIALLY mine, whom is constantly eating unknowable objects/dead things out in the yard. He unearthed a rodent skull from the soil recently and ate it. Fucking puppy.

Yeah, I used to dog-sit a couple of boxers for some folks when I was in HS. Had to keep a roll of paper towel by the door to clean out the slobber from their jowels as we let them back into the house. Nasty.

But they were terrific dogs. And don't worry, the chew stage will be over before too long. It never ends soon enough, though.

I regularly have to use anti-bacterial soap infused paper towels to scrape the mud and random detritus from his jowl pouches every time he comes in from outside.
The best is when he does that doggy "shake" right after a big drink of water and shares his slobber with anyone within range, as well as the walls, carpets, etc.
Nothing like stepping barefooted into an unknown cold, viscous substance on the carpet and assuming it came out of the dog's mouth!

Yes and are they not refered to as Doxens? I know I have heard that before and when I googled Doxen it returned a number of results.

My pug is the greatest dog i could ever imagine having.

She never barks, sleeps all the time, and has never in her life (5 years) growled at a single thing. I can stick my hand in her food bowl while she is eating and she doesn't show a single sign of being upset.

Not all pugs are like that though...
