I don't think Mike "always" pays his own and he definitely doesn't discriminate against d-bags. Willie, Levi, and Rudi were all d-bags in many ways. And he didn't give long-term deals to a number of players, including Justin, Steinbach, Stacy, TJ, and Shayne.

None of whom were worth what they were asking for long term.

The difference here is that these guys are worth it. Justin, Steiny, et. al. were not really premier players but the market treated them as such. Joseph and all our other impending FAs are, and I think the culture around this team is such that these guys are willing to come back for fair market price (traditionally what the Bengals offer) rather than pulling a TJ.

I appreciate the sentiment only too well, but Leon has to be at least 3rd on the list of guys to re-sign. JJ and Ced are higher priorities because they are entering the last year of their deals.

Leon has 2010 and 2011 still left on his rookie deal.

Ok but if you could only afford to keep lets say 2 of the 3, I think I'd keep Jospeh and Hall.

Agreed... a CB is so much harder to find than a RB. Gotta' keep this defense intact.

Yeah, I read about Mankins' comments yesterday and I doubt he plays another down as a Patriot. He basically called Robert Kraft and Bill Belichick liars who reneged on their word to give him a new deal after 2009. Pretty crazy to think $7 million a season for any offensive guard would generate such a reaction.

there's the answer to our hole at LG that we've all been wanting. pony up and go get him, mike.

NO CONCERNS YET: With Tuesday’s news of the Bengals and cornerback Johnathan Joseph in the preliminary stages of discussing an extension, many have wondered what this means for Leon Hall, who has two years left on his contract.

For now, Hall is not even worrying about it.

“I haven’t thought too much about it right now. I still have years left (on my contract) but I’m not really worried about it at this moment,” Hall said.

Hall has two seasons left on his contract but another hang up in all future contracts is a new collective bargaining agreement. No one knows if a salary cap will return or what the future parameters will be.

This from a Football Outsiders/ ESPN Insider article about which teams
spend the most/least amount of certain positions (This is the only position the Bengals were listed)

Defensive Backs

Highest Spenders: Denver Broncos ($32,494,375)
Lowest Spenders: Cincinnati Bengals ($7,863,150)

Denver went high-risk, high-reward in the secondary and won; it signed Brian Dawkins, Renaldo Hill and Andre Goodman to play alongside Champ Bailey, and the Broncos were healthy (63 of 64 starts) and effective (sixth in pass defense DVOA). Meanwhile, Cincinnati had arguably the league's best corner tandem in Leon Hall and Johnathan Joseph, a pair that were still on rookie contracts in 2009. They were 10th in pass defense DVOA at less than a quarter of the cost.
