Memory Question

Recommended Posts

4 All Memory and Crucial both have scanners that will look at your system and tell you exactly what you need.

As a general rule I still try to install memory in pairs as it is easier and heads off a lot of potentially vexing problems, though it's not nearly as critical as it used to be...

haha this is true.

I only have 1GB right now and Vista is hogging 3/4th's of it.

Drooling over having an extra GB.

Ugh...

I never got Vista to run worth a shit with less than 4GB (which required a 64-bit install) but that should help.

Memory mgmt is one of the many things they fixed in W7...

yea my brother encouraged me to go to W7.

I actually haven't minded Vista for the most part. Typically my computer doesn't run slow (for my tastes), but has been lagging a little lately. So I took advantage of some Best Buy gift cards to upgrade.

Won't lie, I partially did it because my computer doesn't play Go's game rewind .mp4's that well. :)

in the future newegg probably has 4gb ram for $100-120... but youll only need to add 2gb more.. a stick of 2gb is likely $50-60... would be a WORLD of difference..

yea I thought about going with 4GB but I think I'll be happy with 2.

The ones I bought were even $4-$5 cheaper on Crucial's website, but it was a matter of having Best Buy gift cards to use. Probably wouldn't be upgrading without them. I don't hate my current speed, but will be happy with an upgrade.

I would almost say 4GB is the minimum for decent performance on any windws OS Vista +
only if he has a 64 bit system, which considering it came with 1gb, im going to say it isnt.. so anything over 4gb would be unused...

but yea id i was running windows i would go with 6gb minimum for my geek needs.

is that the same as 64-bit?
That's your CPU, which is capable of running a 64-bit OS. You can find out if your OS is 64-bit by right-clicking on Computer and going to Properties. In the window that pops up look under System, and to the right of System type it will say whether it is 32 or 64 bit.

Yeah, any more than 3GB of memory would be wasted on that system...
this was always a debate when i had vista, that in 32 bit 4gb was used but some nonsense about the 32 bt doesnt show it but sets it aside for system process/resources or something..

i had moved to 64 bit at that point so never paid much attention..

A 32-bit OS can only utilize\recognize 3GB of memory (linux with a particular kernel extension excluded) so anything above 3GB is useless window dressing.
