Draft Prospect rankings/discussion

Recommended Posts
Way to put me on the spot! But off the top of my head, I would guess something like..

1 WR AJ Green (Peterson if Green is gone)
2 RB Mikel Leshoure
3 G John Moffitt
4 DT Sione Fua

When I have time to get more involved< I'll post my actual mock.
Looks a lot like Mike doesn't really want Fairley or Bowers.. Don't want to draft Peterson to play corner. Don't think AJ Green is the next best thing.
Other names I've heard are Jonathan Baldwin from Pitt, Tandon Doss from Indiana, Austin Pettis from Boise St and Greg Little from North Carolina. I have know idea as far as how much each is liked at this point.

I have heard talk of Dareus. Though they seem to be lukewarm on guys like him and Quinn at the moment.
PLEASE do not draft a WR in rd 1... PLEASE!!!!
i think there was a reply somewhere along the lines of the team insiders feel much the same as you and i do on this, but there's one guy who's opinion outranks everyone else's who's very enamored with him (green). oh, the frustration!

I'm less worried about the position of the guy at #4 and just want to make sure we get a Pro Bowl caliber player. If its Green, then so be it.

Everybody agreed we needed an OL in 2009 and we took one in Andre Smith. Look how that's worked out.

Just make sure we get a great player and worry about positions more in the mid-rounds when the value is much more similar.

Latest mock I have seen it was Von Miller, LeShoure, and Baldwin which I would take all 3 of those!

Even before his great bowl game, I wanted Hankerson in the 2nd, dude would be great next to Simpson and Shipley
Hell if we can get three with one pick, I'm for it as well.

I know this is sarcasm, but realistically you could get 2 of those guys if you trade down to the bottom of the top 10 and gain a 2nd rounder.
Personally, I wouldn't mind that and being right in front of Arizona might make a QB hunting team willing to deal.

looks like Bowers just had knee surgery to repair a partially torn meniscus.

This should not be a big deal, unless there are other issues or complications.
Mayock: Patrick Peterson could be an All-Pro safety

Posted by Evan Silva on February 17, 2011, 2:52 PM EST

Among the most alarming terms that can be associated with a cornerback is “stiff,” referring to the inability of the defensive back to fluidly flip his hips, run and cover a wideout.

On Thursday’s NFL Network conference call with the media, draft analyst Mike Mayock used the same word when discussing LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson.

“He’s got a little bit of stiffness to him,” said Mayock, adding that Peterson is “most comfortable in press-man (coverage),” but explaining that the 2010 Thorpe Award winner “might be best served as a safety.

“He might be an All-Pro safety.”

Peterson is listed at 6-foot-1 and 222 pounds, and Mayock isn’t the first media member to suggest a position switch for the over-sized corner. Mayock even compared Peterson to Antrel Rolle, an early-career cornerback for the Cardinals who busted at the more valuable position before resurrecting his career at safety.

A more recent example of an All-American college corner who made this transition in the NFL was Malcolm Jenkins of Ohio State.

Jenkins was widely considered a surefire top 8-10 pick entering the 2009 NFL Combine. He fell to the Saints at No. 14 after running a forty time in the mid-4.5s, and is now the starting free safety in New Orleans.

Expect a lot of defensive ends taken in deep first round

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on February 17, 2011, 2:08 PM EST

With our first mock draft posted, we are starting to wrap our minds around the 2011 draft class here at PFT. With a little help from NFL Network’s Mike Mayock.

Mayock held a media conference call on Thursday, and we’ll be posting some of the interesting nuggets throughout the day.

Let’s start with some notes on how this draft looks as a whole. Mayock says it’s the best defensive end class he can remember, and eight players have first round grades from him.

Mayock also says he believes this class has a deeper first round than in recent years. That’s an impressive statement considering how deep last year’s draft was as a whole, but Mayock believes this one loaded with more true first-rounders.

(Mayock’s opinion was in direct contrast to ESPN’s Todd McShay, who said Wednesday he only had only 23-24 first-round grades. So McShay saw this year as a shallow first round. Hmm.)

Add it all up, and this is a good year to be looking for a pass rusher or five technique defensive ends and have picks late in the first round. The Patriots, then, should be smiling with the No. 17, No. 28, and No.33 overall picks.

provided we go dline in round 1, I'd really like the top olineman that can start at multiple OL spots.

My ideal guy right now is Marcus Cannon from TCU. An ideal RG or RT, who's played RT, RG, and LT in his 4 years at TCU. He could step right into RG and would provide insurance at RT in case Andre isn't back in time.

Only drawback with that is that Bobbie Williams isn't going to be benched (even if he should) so drafting a guy for the right side doesn't do any immediate good until Bobbie's contract runs out next year.
Yeh I'm high on Marcus Cannon aswell. Sounds like a good fit for the Bengals. Wouldn't mind drafting Cannon and John Moffitt later on (if he's available). This would certainly sure up the holes on the o-line.

Mayock Updates His Top Fives
Friday, February 11, 2011

NFL Network's Mike Mayock is widely considered the top draft analyst in the business, so we tend to take his opinions seriously. We often do Mayock-related blurbs on the Rotoworld news page.

Mayock released his initial top-fives by position on January 25. He updated them today. Here they are:

Quarterbacks
1. Blaine Gabbert, Missouri
2. Jake Locker, Washington
3. Cam Newton, Auburn
4. Ryan Mallett, Arkansas
5. Andy Dalton, TCU

Comments: Mayock says he's not done with his quarterback evaluation, but he's made some changes since January. He's now got Dalton alone in the five spot after the Horned Frogs' four-year starter previously shared the position with Ricky Stanzi, Colin Kaepernick, and Pat Devlin. Devlin's stock appears to have plummeted since a poor showing at the East-West Shrine Game. Senior Bowl MVP Christian Ponder remains absent from the list.

Running Backs
1. Mark Ingram, Alabama
2. Mikel Leshoure, Illinois
3. Daniel Thomas, Kansas State
4. Ryan Williams, Virginia Tech
5. Jacquizz Rodgers, Oregon State

Comments: Mayock relentlessly talked up Kendall Hunter at the Senior Bowl, so it's surprising that the former Oklahoma State Cowboy is no longer even in a tie for the five spot. The biggest notable here, particularly from a fantasy perspective, is Leshoure's jump into the two-hole. Mayock said during Senior Bowl week that he wanted to watch more film on Leshoure. After doing so, Mayock has moved the Illinois product into conversation as a top-40 selection. Ingram remains the consensus top draft-eligible running back.

Wide Receivers
1. A.J. Green, Georgia
2. Julio Jones, Alabama
3. Titus Young, Boise State
4. Jonathan Baldwin, Pittsburgh
5. Torrey Smith, Maryland

Comments: Smith is the newcomer to the receiver top five, overtaking the old cast of Jerrel Jernigan, Randall Cobb, and Greg Little. Mayock's biggest switch was moving Young past Baldwin into the No. 3 position. Chris Wesseling, dominating the Rotoworld news page Thursday, did a post about Young's rise. Baldwin is a physical freak at 6'5/230 with alleged sub-4.4 speed, but there are concerns about his on-field concentration and off-field decision making.

Tight Ends
1. Kyle Rudolph, Notre Dame
2. Lance Kendricks, Wisconsin
3. Luke Stocker, Tennessee
4. D.J. Williams, Arkansas
5. Virgil Green, Nevada

Comments: It's pretty much status quo here, as Mayock's evaluation of Kendricks through Williams did not change after seeing all three of those players on the Senior Bowl practice field. Stocker has drawn comparisons to Jason Witten and Oakland's Zach Miller as a complete tight end. The only change is the dropping out of Tulsa's Charles Clay in favor of Green.

Interior Offensive Line
1. Mike Pouncey, Florida
2. Danny Watkins, Baylor
3. Clint Boling, Georgia
4. John Moffitt, Wisconsin
5. Rodney Hudson, Florida State

Comments: The old list: 1) Pouncey, 2) Stefen Wisniewski, 3) Watkins, 4) Moffitt, 5) Hudson/Will Rackley. Pouncey is still the likeliest guard/center to be drafted in the first round, and Watkins is emerging as the clear-cut second best interior line prospect despite his age (27 next November). The Football Outsiders just kill it in this breakdown of Watkins and Rodney Hudson. Boling is the newcomer, essentially replacing Wisniewski, who's fallen off the list altogether.

Offensive Tackles
1. Anthony Castonzo, Boston College
2. Nate Solder, Colorado
3. Tyron Smith, USC
4. Gabe Carimi, Wisconsin
5 (tie). Ben Ijalana, Villanova; Derek Sherrod, Mississippi State

Comments: Mayock has bumped Castonzo into first place ahead of Solder. (Mayock and Castonzo share an alma mater, although we'll assume that's not the reason for the switch.) Castonzo was a four-year starter at B.C. and the Eagles' first offensive lineman in over a decade to start on the offensive line as a true freshman. Smith overtakes Carimi as the more athletic tackle prospect; Carimi is probably ticketed for right tackle in the NFL. Ijalana missed the Senior Bowl due to "double hernia" surgery, but teams must be confident in his health. Wes Bunting of the National Football Post loves Ijalana, FWIW.

Defensive Ends
1. Da'Quan Bowers, Clemson
2. J.J. Watt, Wisconsin
3. Adrian Clayborn, Iowa
4. Cameron Jordan, California
5. Robert Quinn, North Carolina

Comments: Watt leaped from No. 5 (tie) among defensive ends into the two-hole after Mayock watched film of Wisconsin's Rose Bowl loss to TCU. Watt did not put up big statistics in that game, so it's a good sign that Mayock was impressed even without the pass rusher racking up sacks and tackles for loss. It's also a good sign for Clayborn that he's still considered a top-three defensive end in this year's draft. He only had 3.5 sacks in 2010. Most observers are holding off on Quinn until he performs at the Combine.

Defensive Tackle
1. Marcell Dareus, Alabama
2. Nick Fairley, Auburn
3. Corey Liuget, Illinois
4. Stephen Paea, Oregon State
5. Jurrell Casey, USC

Comments: In terms of the top of the draft, the most intriguing development is Dareus passing Fairley as the top defensive tackle prospect. Fairley is considered the likely No. 1 pick in many circles. Critics can point to Mayock's ranking of Gerald McCoy over Ndamukong Suh ahead of last year's draft as reason to disagree. Liuget is really picking up steam, as noted in this item on Wednesday's news page.

Outside Linebacker
1. Von Miller, Texas A&M
2. Akeem Ayers, UCLA
3. Justin Houston, Georgia
4. Bruce Carter, North Carolina
5. Chris Carter, Fresno State

Comments: Carter was the 2010 WAC Defensive Player of the Year, but is a 'tweener. He'll appeal to 3-4 teams as an outside rush linebacker. Ayers' best comparison is Karlos Dansby. Houston is sensationally explosive off the edge, though CBS' Rob Rang has questioned his ability to play outside of a 4-3 scheme, calling Houston "one of the more overrated prospects in the draft to this point."

Inside Linebackers
1. Martez Wilson, Illinois
2. Colin McCarthy, Miami (FL)
3. Quan Sturdivant, North Carolina
4. Casey Matthews, Oregon
5. Kelvin Sheppard, LSU

Comments: Hopefully, your team doesn't need an inside linebacker. Because behind Wilson this is a thoroughly unimpressive group.

Cornerbacks
1. Patrick Peterson, LSU
2. Prince Amukamara, Nebraska
3. Aaron Williams, Texas
4. Jimmy Smith, Colorado
5. Brandon Harris, Miami (FL)

Comments: Ranked third in Mayock's previous rankings, Harris is slipping after getting torched by Notre Dame wide receiver Michael Floyd in the Sun Bowl. It's probably deserved, especially considering Floyd only got a third-round grade from the NFL Draft Advisory Committee. Smith, as expected, is rising. Latest word from SI's Tony Pauline has Smith looking "sensational" in pre-Combine workouts.

Safeties
1. Rahim Moore, UCLA
2. Ahmad Black, Florida
3. Marcus Gilchrist, Clemson
4. Quinton Carter, Oklahoma
5. Deunta Williams, North Carolina

Comments: Williams, previously third in Mayock's safety ranks, was recently spotted walking around Chapel Hill with a boot on the foot he fractured in the Tar Heels' bowl game. He seems unlikely to participate in the Combine. Robert Sands and Will Hill have vanished from the list, replaced by Gilchrist and Carter.

Rumors, notes and buzz concerning the 2011 NFL draft.
Wes Bunting

February 18, 2011

• The major concern in scouting circles on Villanova OL Ben Ijalana isn't that he's making the jump from the I-AA level, but his overall passive demeanor that sticks out on tape at times.

• One guy a lot of scouts have identified to me as the prospect who is most likely to get over drafted is Boise State wide out Titus Young. Saying he could go as early as late one.

• Speaking of vertical threats there is no real consensus on Maryland WR Torrey Smith. Everyone loves his speed, but there are a lot of doubts about him developing into a polished NFL starter.

• I can't find any NFL scout to tell me they love Colorado OT Nate Solder as a prospect, they all say he's talented, but no one says they love him.

• The same can be said for Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert, haven't talked to any scout who had convictions in giving the guy a first round grade.

• The more teams I talk with the less I get the feeling that any top tier offensive tackle prospects are going to make it through the first round. I keep hearing they will be all likely be gone by the time the mid/late 20's roll around.

• However, there is growing skepticism from some NFL team sources that a couple of the better pass rushers could be where the value falls at the end of the first round.

• One offensive lineman that has a couple of teams interested in the second/third round range is Auburn OT Lee Ziemba. Hearing he's getting a lot of consideration as a potential starting right tackle in the NFL.

• The hot "developmental" offensive tackle I keep hearing about is Virginia Union's David Mims. Could possibly come off the board in the same range as Ramon Harewood last season.

• There are growing concerns in draft circles about where Purdue DE Ryan Kerrigan can play in the NFL. He doesn't look fluid enough to play in space and lacks the anchor to hold up as a down defensive end. Also, a lot of sources have also said he's a pretty "blah" athlete and isn't going to test well at the NFL Combine.

• Heard the first Allen Bailey/Vernon Gholston comparison this past week from an NFL scout.

• Talked to a scout earlier in the year that said NFL officials will be turned off by LSU DT Drake Nevis when they finally see how small he is up close.

• Baylor DT Phil Taylor is the one prospect I'm hearing could be the guy who gets drafted a lot higher than most assume. With his combination or size and athleticism paired with the need/lack of 3-4 nose tackles in this year's draft, hearing it's possible a team could end up reaching for him in the top-15.

• Finally, every scout I've talked with does not think there is any "proof in the pudding" that Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick is a potential first round pick. Citing that there is just too much work to be done. However, I am hearing the second round is a distinct possibility.
One offensive lineman that has a couple of teams interested in the second/third round range is Auburn OT Lee Ziemba. Hearing he's getting a lot of consideration as a potential starting right tackle in the NFL.

I like Ziemba. He won't be able to stay at LT in the pros, but should fit at RT. He started 52 games for Auburn.

not at all. he's entitled to his opinion, i just don't agree with it.

I like that, when a draft "expert" says it, it's simply "opinion", when some random guy on a message board says it, he's pretty much an idiot. lol
