I am getting a kick out of Charlie.

Talking about his wild crazy drug habits, banging multiple porn stars, trying to fight his producer. He is pure comedy. Sad thing is that he is so serious.

Addiction is a terrible disease.

This may be funny to some, but I think it's heartbreaking. The tragedy is that there are many in his family that truly love Charlie far more than he loves himself. And there is no one with the power to help other than himself.

And then there's the fact that he has what, 5 kids?

True.. but the distinction is made because it's not a repeated string of bad decisions.. It's one or 2 bad decisions that entrap you in a way that is very similar to fighting a disease.

And some kinds of addictions, like alcoholism have a strong genetic base.. So if you are predisposed to developing a problem because of your genetics, then that also takes some of the power out of your hands.. Someone with a genetic predisposition to alcoholism can't engage in what you or I would consider normal activities we all took part in (well most of us)as young adults without serious risk of become permanently ensnared. Unfortunately generally one does not know this until it is too late.

I think calling it a disease is trying to reckon with these facts in the court of public opinion so people realize a drunk isn't necessarily that way because they choose to be. And to try and express the idea that maybe some amount of compassion is appropriate.

It's this mindset that prevents many in need of treatment and therapy from getting the help they so sorely need. Instead they are branded as weak, dirty, sleazy, or trash. See: War on Drugs.

Addiction is most certainly a disease

Against my better judgement, I have once again quit drinking.
So have I... Not because I have a problem (couple drinks a night after work), but it is interfering with my weed smoking...

1/2 :ninja:

No really.. I am just so much more.... Uh well, lucid when I don't drink. I blame my fiance.. She is a bit of a lush (not really an alcoholic). But I never really drank much before we got together..

Well, I was pretty hardcore in the Army, but that doesn't count.. Everyone I knew was an alcoholic in the service... Except for that one boring guy that no one liked, who just hung out in his room all the time polishing his boots.

Of course, that guy got out with like 20 grand in the bank because he never did anything, and bought a truck (with cash), so I guess that really makes me the lame one..

I'm having to cut back as well. I find it hard to focus on intensive tasks (say, learning a new language) when you're a couple of beers into the evening...

I have my health and my kids at stake (the wife and I recently separated, a looooong story) in potential divorce proceedings, so I need to keep it cool.

Essentially I had been drinking 8-12 beers a night since I was in the Army...in 1989...so, um...yeah.

That's another thing. My night typically ends when I get home from work (7pm) because once I start drinking, I don't move from the couch.. I want to be able to spend my time more wisely..

Like playing video games.

If I remember right, you guys have just been keeping it together for the kids and haven't been in a real marriage for some time..

Or am I completely wrong?

Well kids are tougher than we think.. My parents got divorced when I was very young and I still have a good relationship with both of them.. This may all be for the best in the long run..

Good luck man.

Quitting drinking fucking sucks. I mean, I used to have tons of vices and now I've pared them down to just two: booze and smokes. And I need to give up both. What a bummer. I would have called sex a vice, but since I ain't currently getting any that isn't self-inflicted, its actually become more of an addiction. Fucking internet pr0n, how I covet thee.

I am a sad, sad little man....

Coming from a random name on the Internet this may not mean a damn thing, but my grandfather died from cirhossis of the liver from drinking. He never even got to have a real conversation with my brother and I. Isn't that shitty that because of a drink that you won't be able to get to know your grandchildren?
My woman's uncle is on his deathbed. He's as yellow as a bumblebee and just waiting to die. He let it get so bad that he refuses real food. In addition, his brother's kidneys are now failing and the doctor predicted a transplant in the near future if he doesn't change his ways (which he should only get if he finds himself a donor, but that's for another thread).

That brings me to the question: How can you sit at home and put something that has no benefit what so ever to your health in your body? Don't you feel bloated and fat afterwards? I feel like total shit

Continued... (phone screws up my posts)

....... when I drink. To do it night after night I would really have to be running from myself. How can one enjoy not having a sharp mind, feeling bloated, weak, and smell of alcohol?

Maybe it's because I've seen a lot of it growing up and I never, ever wanted to be like the people that I saw, but I don't understand the need and/or want to live that lifestyle.

By the way, please change the "you's" to "one's" in my previous posts. I don't want anyone to read and feel like I am talking about them. I'd like to try and understand the problem instead of pissing people off (probably a touchy subject for some). Maybe it will make me more sympathetic towards addicts.

Addiction is very personality-driven and not always easy to define. Most of us were technically alcoholics in college. I drink 5 nights a week at school on average, but always socially. By definition I'm an alcoholic, but I don't drink alone nor do I have an urge or need to drink otherwise, and I don't have a problem not drinking when I don't want to or if there is no social reason to.

It's a fine line we walk.
