hue has a little special teams experience, but no defensive experience that I can see.

Hue seems to have good relationships with players - like Chad and TJ. Since he is just assisting, his lack of specific knowledge won't hurt. And it builds up his resume for later jobs.

Bengals hire Hue Jackson as assistant

Whatever faults you might find with Bengals owner Mike Brown -- and I haven’t been ashamed in pointing them out -- you never can begrudge the man his loyalty. And he made another example of that today as the Bengals have announced they’ve hired former Raiderscoach (and former Bengals receivers coach) Hue Jackson as an assistant helping the secondary and special teams*.

Jackson, you might recall, was fired only one season into his Oakland tenure after leading the team to an 8-8 record and trading first- and second-round picks to the Bengals for quarterback Carson Palmer.

*It should be noted that Jackson doesn't appear to have ever coached defense, though he did work with special teams when he was at Cal State-Fullerton in 1990 and the World League's London Monarchs in 1991. So yeah, this totally seems like a loyalty hire.

After Al Davis’ death and the hiring of general manager Reggie McKenzie, Jackson’s stay with the Raiders was doomed. Particularly after he tore into his team following a Week 17 loss, saying he was pissed off and disappointed. “I’m going to take a stronger hand in this whole team, in this whole organization,” Jackson said at the time. “There ain’t no way that I’m going to feel like I feel today a year from now. I promise you that."

Well, that’s totally true now, because Jackson should be in Cincinnati in Week 17 of 2012.

It’s a place where he spent 2004-06, helping mold Chad Ochocinco and T.J. Houshmandzadeh into two of the better receivers in the league. And while he had the Raiders in the race for an AFC West title this year -- until, that is, a guy named Tim Tebow emerged for the Broncos -- McKenzie decided to bring in his own coach after the season.

“A the end of the day, I didn’t win enough games, didn’t get to the playoffs,” Jackson said in January. “Once Mark (Davis, Al’s son) saw where the franchise was, after he hired Reggie, he gave Reggie the opportunity to bring in his own coach.”

There has been speculation on who actually brokered the trade that seems like it’ll pay off awfully well for the Bengals -- Jackson now says he only helped bring the Raiders and Bengals together and that those on a higher pay-grade made the final decision.

But now, Jackson is in the strange position to see how the deal works out from the opposite side of where he was when he first helped make it.

Jackson returns to Bengals coaching staff

By GEOFF HOBSON

Posted 4 minutes ago

Former Raiders head coach Hue Jackson returned to the staff where he coached the wide receivers to franchise record numbers Friday when Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis named him an assistant coach.
Jackson, fired after one season in Oakland despite leading the Raiders to a tie for the AFC West's best record at 8-8, is going to assist new secondary coach Mark Carrier as well as special teams coach Darrin Simmons.
Jackson made his name as an offensive mind at USC and during the last 11 seasons in the NFL in a pro career that began as a running backs coach in Washington, where he worked with Lewis during the 2002 season. Lewis brought him to the Bengals in 2004 as the receivers coach and in the next three seasons Chad Ochocinco led the AFC in receiving yards while T.J. Houshmandzadeh averaged 1,005 yards per year.

Lewis' high regard for Jackson's coaching abilities culminated in the decision to bring him into the fold even though he's not on the offensive side of the ball. Jackson became close with Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer when they were coordinators on the 2007 Falcons staff that went through head coach Bobby Petrino's resignation late in the year and weeks later Jackson later recommend Zimmer to Lewis for the Bengals' job.
"I just want to coach football. I have a long relationship with Marvin and I'm looking to helping and assisting who ever in trying to help the organization attain its goal," Jackson said. "I've got a lot to learn, but who better to learn from than Marvin Lewis and Mike Zimmer? Those are two guys that I know and I'm comfortable with and Darrin is one the better special teams coaches in the league."

Hue Jackson returns to the Bengals

Apparently, the trade that sent Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer to the Raiders also included a coach to be named later.

The Bengals have announced that former Raiders head coach Hue Jackson has been hired. He’ll serve as an assistant coach helping the secondary and special teams.

“Hue is a tremendous addition to our staff,” Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said in a team-issued release. “I relied on Hue greatly when he was with us, and his success overall in the NFL, including being selected for a head coaching position, is well documented. He has expertise in all aspects of the game, and we are fortunate to have obtained his services.”

It looks a little like make-work for Jackson, whose past experiences primarily focused on the offensive side of the ball. According to his bio from his time at USC, Jackson worked with special teams in 1988 and 1989 at Pacific, in 1991 with the London Monarchs, and in 1991 at Cal State-Fullerton.

Jackson previously spent three years with the Bengals, from 2004 through 2006, as receivers coach.

I think that's called Bedinghausing.

Ha. That's exactly what I thought when I first heard this news.

Mike Brown has pulled off to truly great deals in his lifetime. The first is when he swindled the County on his stadium deal; the second is when he swindled the Raiders on the palmer deal. In both cases he later hired the lead negotiator of the swindled party. (Bedinghaus and Jackson)
