The way Gresh played yesterday was how I want to see him play all the time, he was beasting guys with just straight up AFC North type of physicality.

We should sign Eric berry to come talk shit to him before every game to get him amped up. Oh....and also to play some saftey would be nice.

Kansas City opened the game with a three-and-out, thanks to Geno Atkins shedding a run-block and dropping Jamaal Charles for a limited two-yard gain. Two plays later Atkins deflected a third down pass, forcing the Chiefs to punt the football. Is there anyone that owns Bengals gear without some sort of man-crush with Atkins? Cincinnati didn't fare much better in response. After a one-handed eight-yard reception by rookie Mohamed Sanu, BenJarvus Green-Ellis picked up the first down on an 11-yard pitch to the right. Cincinnati failed to acquire another first down on the possession, forced to punt four plays later.
Fortunately that wasn't the story of the first quarter -- well, at least not for the Bengals. The big plays that defined the first quarter (which defined the game):
THE FAKE PUNT

After Ryan Succop converted a 34-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead, the Bengals offense resumed at their own 22-yard line with 8:26 remaining in the first quarter. After a supposed three and out, the Bengals lined up to punt the football away. At this point in the game, the Bengals were sleep-walking a little. They needed a spike of energy, something to get them going.
Clark Harris snapped the football directly to Cedric Peerman, while Brian Leonard sealed the outside giving Peerman plenty of lane to pick up 32 yards on the fake, giving Cincinnati's offense life. Right?
THE FOURTH DOWN COVERSION, PART II

Despite the fake, the Bengals still appeared lifeless, cameo characters in The Walking Dead. Jermaine Gresham's false start pushed Cincinnati back to the Chiefs 44-yard line, forcing the team into a first and 15. Andy Dalton nearly overthrows A.J. Green on a wide receiver screen, forcing Green to jump for the football and take the three-yard loss (in fairness the Chiefs defense recognized and reacted immediately). Dalton then badly overthrows A.J. Green down the right sidelines, and picks up 11 yards on a third and 18 dump down to Brian Leonard.
This sets up fourth and seven at Kansas City's 36-yard line -- roughly no man's land with a low-percentage distance conversion for Mike Nugent and where punting doesn't really help the field position game all that much. So the Bengals go for it on fourth down.
Dalton, empty backfield, looks downfield, even cocks his arm momentarily, then abandoned the pocket for an 11-yard scramble and the first down.
JERMAINE GRESHAM 18-YARD RECEPTION

With 3:40 remaining in the first quarter, the Bengals are pushing, though sustaining a drive with two fourth down conversions (one of which was a fake punt). It's second and seven from the Chiefs 22-yard line. Cincinnati has offset-I with Jermaine Gresham at the right TE position.
No one bothers covering his hitch route over the middle, about five yards off the line of scrimmage. It was almost like Gresham recognized the gap in the zone, exposed it and waited for the similarly-thinking Andy Dalton to throw it.
Gresham hauls in the football and sprints another 12 yards, picking up 18 total on the play to the Chiefs four-yard line.
A.J. GREEN FRANCHISE BREAKING RECEPTION

Then there's this.

The Bengals take a 7-3 lead, never relinquishing that lead for the rest of the afternoon.
THE GENO ATKINS FORCED FUMBLE

With :56 remaining in the first quarter, the Chiefs try responding to Cincinnati's touchdown, even picking up a first down -- no thanks to Terence Newman's defensive hold on third and seven that wiped out Carlos Dunlap's quarterback sack.
Matt Cassel hands off to Peyton Hillis, targeting the left edge. Geno Atkins punches the football out of Hillis' grasp, recovered by Vontaze Burfict. Bengals football.

Despite Geno Atkins' forced fumble, recovered by linebacker Vontaze Burfict during the closing seconds of the first quarter, the Bengals went three and out, capped by a third down sack from Tamba Hali. Including that possession, both teams went three and out on four consecutive drives to kickoff the second quarter. Thrilling.

A.J. GREEN 40-YARD RECEPTION

Not every touchdown was easy for the Bengals. During their first quarter touchdown possession, Cincinnati needed to convert two fourth down possessions to sustain the drive. With great field position at the 10:05 mark in the second quarter, Andy Dalton launches the football down the right sidelines, hitting Green in stride for the 40-yard reception (taking a nasty hit in the process).
The reception, along with an unnecessary roughness on the Chiefs, shifted already optimal field position from the Bengals 43 to the Chiefs eight-yard line.
ANDY DALTON TOUCHDOWN

That being said, the Bengals had third and goal from the Chiefs 11-yard line following a second down quarterback sack that lost four yards. Dalton finds tight end Jermaine Gresham, who drags Chiefs defenders five yards into the endzone. A review reversed the touchdown, evidently showing that Gresham's knee hit the turf with the football inside the one-yard line.
Instead of a chip-shot field goal with 7:54 remaining in the quarter, Marvin Lewis goes for it on fourth down again. With the entire world expecting BenJarvus Green-Ellis to get the football, who is known as a short-yardage back, especially during goal line situations, Dalton fakes the handoff and rolls out on a naked boot, scoring the easy touchdown near the front left pylon.
Bengals take a 14-3 lead.
BENJARVUS GREEN-ELLIS TOUCHDOWN

Following Jamaal Charles' 16-yard sprint with 7:45 remaining, Matt Cassel throws consecutive incomplete passes and finalizes Kansas City's possession with a no-gain check down to Charles on third and ten. Cincinnati resumes on offense at their own 21-yard line. Jermaine Gresham converted a third and seven at Cincinnati's 24-yard line and BenJarvus Green-Ellis followed that up with 21-yard sprint up the middle, turning the field and placing Cincinnati's offense at Kansas City's 40-yard line.
Eventually the 11-play touchdown drive ended at the Chiefs one-yard line on first and goal for the Bengals. This time Green-Ellis took the handoff and powered into the endzone for the touchdown, giving the Bengals a 21-6 lead with :57 remaining in the first half.

CHIEFS
What we learned: A week after a fairly game effort against the Steelers in Pittsburgh, the Chiefs fell back into their state of normalcy and dormancy. An ineffective QB Matt Cassel was benched after halftime — perhaps for the season — but it was no difference in a 28-6 loss to the Bengals that highlighted many of the Chiefs’ weaknesses. Even having a lead the past two games (after going eight-plus games without one) hasn’t helped as they have fallen to 1-9.

What’s in store next: The Chiefs have a winning percentage of .100 and they still have two meetings left with Peyton Manning and the Broncos. With a 30-23 victory, the Broncos pretty much wrapped up the AFC West. The Chiefs have to hope that they catch the Broncos somewhat flat, but it’s rare to have a divisional trap game, certainly not for a Chiefs team that is 0-5 in Kansas City and that has been outscored by 68 points in those games. The Chiefs now have won three of their past 14 games at Arrowhead Stadium.

What the heck? When it rains, it pours. The injury bug hit the Chiefs Sunday with WR Dwayne Bowe and OLT Branden Albert leaving the game. Bowe suffered a neck injury, and Albert left with a back ailment. Their losses were felt. Bowe was held without a catch for the first time since 2007, and the other Chiefs wideouts combined for eight catches and only 83 yards. The Chiefs got a look at their future left tackle if Albert doesn’t re-sign, but Donald Stephenson looked a little shaky shifting from right tackle (where he started in a makeshift lineup) to the left side. The group struggled mostly in allowing three sacks, collecting only 284 yards and converting 1-of-11 third downs.

PASSING GAME (B+)
Andy Dalton had his fourth game this season with a passer rating over 100. A.J. Green’s one-handed catch for the first touchdown was another one for the highlight reels while Mohamed Sanu had a touchdown in his first NFL start. Jermaine Gresham tied a season-high with six catches. The only minor criticisms are Dalton taking two sacks.
RUNNING GAME (A-)
With the Chiefs daring the Bengals to run, they took advantage and had their best game in nearly two years. BenJarvus Green-Ellis had his first 100-yard game as a Bengal and there was solid blocking by the interior of the line as most of his carries were up the middle. Take away Cedric Peerman’s 32-yard gain on a fake punt and he still averaged 6.1 yards per carry. The only negative was four penalties called on what were run plays.
RUN DEFENSE (B+)
Kansas City came into the game averaging 149 yards per game. The Bengals held them to 113. Jamaal Charles had 45 yards in the first quarter and then was held to 42 over the remaining three quarters as Kansas City fell behind. Geno Atkins forced a Peyton Hillis fumble during the first quarter which was recovered by Vontaze Burfict in Chiefs territory.
PASS DEFENSE (A-)
With the Chiefs having a patchwork offensive line, the Bengals got plenty of pressure on Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn, forcing three sacks. Dwayne Bowe was held without a catch in the first half before not playing in the second due to a neck injury. Tight end Tony Moeaki was the only receiver to get over 50 yards (73). Terence Newman had a bad holding penalty to keep a drive going but other than that it was pretty clean.
SPECIAL TEAMS (A-)
The fake punt run by Cedric Peerman jump started things again. Kevin Huber had one of his best games with a 53.7 yard gross average and 48.7 yard net. Of the six punts, three were inside the 20. Dre Kirkpatrick also did a good job forcing the Chiefs into a couple penalties. Mike Nugent was wide left from 50 but it didn’t have any effect on the game.
COACHING (A)
The emphasis all week was on getting the run game going and stopping the Chiefs running attack. Both elements were successful. Considering the outlook two weeks ago, Marvin Lewis has to be somewhat content on being 5-5 with the schedule being favorable over the next four.

They were completely outclassed and the game quickly became uncompetitive. Kansas City (1-9) and is on pace to have the No.1 pick in the draft and the start is tied for the worst in team history. Biggest area to fix: Lack of competition: The Chiefs fought hard at Pittsburgh in a 16-13 overtime loss. They were in the game. But the Chiefs never really were in the game against the Bengals. They have to somehow find a way to stay focused.

He wasn’t great when he played in the second half, but it did give the offense a chance to work with him. What to watch for: The Chiefs host first-place Denver on Sunday. A Denver win would mathematically eliminate the Chiefs from the hunt for the AFC West title. The third quarter during Cincinnati's 28-6 win over the Kansas City Chiefs is best summarized as a thrilling exchange of failed offenses resolved into an exchange of punts. Despite picking up a first down, converting a third and 15 on a 21-yard A.J. Green reception (surprised?), a short third down out-route to Brandon Tate went incomplete and Kevin Huber punted. Neither offense started beyond their respective 20-yard line, but once the Bengals crossed midfield.
With 3:27 remaining in the second quarter, Bengals cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick lined up as the right gunner from the Chiefs 39-yard line during Huber's second punt in the quarter. While Kirkpatrick shifted to his left during his Olympian sprint down-field, Huber angled his 35-yard punt left, perfectly nailing the two-yard line; an accurate kick not unlike a golden shot in Tiger Woods' video games series. As it ricochets off the ground, the football nudges into Kirkpatrick's diving chest.

i had a question about this play. as kirkpatrick bobbles the ball, while trying both to down it and secure it, you see a member of the chiefs stick his hand in and touch the ball. until the ball is actually secured, wouldn't that allow for it to be considered a free ball once he touches it? i thought it was a really unwise move on the chief's players part.

nah its the same thing as what Newman did against the Redskins. Once the Bengals player touches it, its a sort of "dead ball". A chiefs player can try and pick it up and run with it, but the Bengals would not get the ball unless the Chiefs player established possession and then subsequently fumbled.

yeah that has to be the best way to deflate someone talking to you because there is no comeback from that

I couldn't tell if that was Marvin being sarcastic, or talking about Gresham sitting down in zones (often called windows) making himself available for Dalton.

Lap and Lance chuckled at it.

Even so that is kind of a funny name for it.

He's doing windows, he's washing rims...come on down to Jermaine Gresham's car wash...

Bengals are 11-14 on fourth downs this year. The 11 conversions and 78.57 percent are both tops during Lewis' tenure.[/background]

I thought it more of an idiom like "my wife packed everything but the kitchen sink for our vacation".
