Socialist.... What does that word mean to you?

Recommended Posts

I think we live in a ridiculous time where just because we are forced to vote for what we believe is always the lesser evil we get pegged as a socialist... Liberal... Ultra conservative even though we don't agree with everything they say...

We live with different levels of socialism in our lives everyday... To me it's a matter of the level of socialism you want to live with... It is also what is the right level of socialism that will balance out the greed and excess of a completely free market system....

We are all living and utilizing a socialist society so "accusing" someone of being a socialist is a talking point cop out that divisive forms of media have thrust upon us and some have run with....

Took the words right out of my mouth.. So unless you want to do away with the standing army, public police force, public fire, public roads, the mail system and everything else the government does for us you too are a socialist. The question as you point out is;  How much of a socialist are you?

Those who rail the loudest about socialism actually fear communism, have nary a clue what either word means, and are oblivious to the fact that they are living in a soft fascist state.

And I'm a socialist of the left-wing, tree hugging variety... ^_^

Socialism to me means what can we do better as a society, for society, than we can do as individuals. Its recognizing that we are all connected and dependent on each other.

I'm really interested in what the conservatives have to say here. Put away the hyperbole and give honest answers.

BTW it's been an interesting progression to see TJ who once had comments about socialism in his sig be the one posting this.

To me it means everyone, from individuals to corporations, contributing towards making society better as a whole and guaranteeing fundamental human rights. Ensuring that our nation's infrastructure (roads, bridges, water, electrical/power, technological, environmental) is safe, modern, and structurally sound, with every citizen having equal access to food, shelter, health care (mental and physical), education and transportation, with the government acting as an agent on behalf of all citizens to make it happen.

"EVERYONE"....that is the key word.  And that is why it will never happen.

I was an idealistic teen and young adult in the late 60's and early 70's.  I considered myself a young ultra liberal out to change the world and make it a better place for all.  But along life's journey my thinking has changed.  I am still idealistic in many ways but I refuse to label myself.  Labels are for politicians and politicians always have an agenda.  Like Popeye, I am who I am and I believe what I believe.

it means Obamacare

If by socialism you mean fascist system designed to be a bailout to the insurance companies....

And sadly still better than the system we used to have.... think about that for a minute....

What a member of the Communist League of Tampa thinks in the context of the Sanders campaign.

Actually his historical analysis is pretty good, but I think he goes off the rails a bit when he gets to "real socialism." Not that his elucidation is mistaken, it's just delusional as is the case with the hardest core of remaining pinkos in this country.

You know when you are debating something with someone and then you say one phrase and the other person stops listening to your point and starts thinking of their retort to that one phrase you just made... Try to debate a topic with someone and bring up socialism in the middle of it and watch what happens 99% of the time. Not ragging the thread b/c its a worthy topic. However these distinctions drive me crazy. We all try to label ourselves or one another and it gets us nowhere. Rarely does a real debate happen where someone posts an idea and someone on "the other side" is like "yeah, I agree that is a good idea."

I have ideas all over the board and I can't rightly define myself. I believe that the federal gov't does and should play a large role in our lives but many issues should be left up to the state. I believe that we are wasting billions of dollars in the war on drugs, although I think that we should be spending more on the war on hard drugs. I believe that if I lived in Mexico I would be trying to sneak into the greatest superpower this world has probably even known, but at the same time how can we turn our heads on illegal immigration and not try to stop it... But I also believe that building a giant bad ass wall isn't stopping anything and we have to find a smarter way to get immigrants in legally. How do we do that? I have no freaking idea but as long as we debate what a socialist, communist, fascist, liberal, libertarian or conservative is we are just spinning our wheels.

That is my two cents. Sorry I don't post here much anymore fellas... I do miss most of you but I usually felt like I was talking to a wall and not getting anywhere but frustrated. I will never leave for good though :)

Rick!! Welcome back brother, good to have you around again, definitely been days where I have said publicly that you were missed as the only conservative around here with some sense. How's the family? Hope you stick around pal.

Thanks Elflocko and Jamie, all are doing great. Up to 3 hoodlums running around the house causing havoc! Like I said I never left but time is not exactly abundant anymore so my mass posting days are over. I will try to put my two cents in here and there though. Started a new job earlier this year as well. Things are def good but def crazy at the same time. Wouldn't have it any other way though :)
