Guest BlackJesus
FEMA Wants No Photos of Dead From Reuters NEW ORLEANS  The U.S. agency leading Hurricane Katrina rescue efforts said Tuesday that it does not want the news media to photograph the dead as they are recovered. The Federal Emergency Management Agency, heavily criticized for its slow response to the devastation caused by the hurricane, rejected journalists' requests to accompany rescue boats searching for storm victims.  An agency spokeswoman said space was needed on the rescue boats. "We have requested that no photographs of the deceased be made by the media," the spokeswoman said in an e-mail.
The BBC is showing full coverage of the Hurricane and thus the rest of the World is seeing the thousands of dead bodies..... but yet the American public has our news censored.... is this right ?
Jason
Serious question. What would be the point of showing the dead bodies? We know there are a lot of people that died from this storm. That happens in a Cat 4/5 storm.
Guest ONYX
I vote NO. Images of lifeless refugee children floating face down in muddy water may give our american children nightmares.

In Iraq we also don't show any of the dead... but the BBC and rest of the world does. Thus Other countries may not be supportive of the War or War in general because they see the "real side" of such war and not a candy coated version

Homer_Rice
And don't forget the photos of the torture sessions.... If I were cynical, I say that the faster people "forget" about the implications of this, the better off we'll be.

Hooky
Why don't they show kiddie porn on tv? That's censorship. That's obviously extreme, but you have to draw the line somewhere. You can't just say censorship is bad. If it's on the open airwaves, there's got to be control. The best parents in the world can't sheild their children from totally uncensored media. Besides, there will be plenty of power point dead, floating bodies presentations soon enough on the web. Guaranteed.
Guest ONYX
I for one, dont understand why the media is still covering this event. It is water under the bridge. (pardon the pun) The major networks should do their jobs and show more coverage of NASCAR for example. Im tired of looking at all these refugees on my tv screen....got refugees drowning, refugees playing football, my God when will this crap end. Guest mongoloido
I'll say the networks should be allowed to show the bodies, but should choose not to out of respect for the dead, the families of the dead, and the viewers. I'm not a fan of censorship, and prefer people to have the chance to choose to do the polite thing... Sometimes it works, sometimes you get boneheads who post every disgusting photo on the internet (out of respect for BJ, I won't name names). It's unneccessary. We know the horrors of death and war without seeing the body. Constantly seeing the bodies of dead people would de-sensitize the veiwers to the horror of death. If the media was allowed to show it we would get bombarded with images of dead bodies in car wrecks, shootings, babies that were beaten, etc.. I don't need to see a body to be saddened and outraged.
