Drafting Olinmen - Why it's hard, and how to find good ones.

So then if we had the money for only one of two guys, who do we keep.

Tee or Jonah?

I guess it all comes down to how you look at it and what factors you consider.

In my mind, the chances of signing Tee in general is very low...he's a #1 receiver on most NFL teams and arguably deserves to be paid as such...since we already have perhaps the best #1 WR in the game...and since Tee's agent plays hardball...etc, etc...in all reality I just don't see much of a chance of signing him irrespective of the Jonah situation.

Jonah on the other hand is playing well at a position and positional group which has been problematic for the Bengals since Whit and others left many years ago.  OLine has cost us dearly the past few years including losing a Super Bowl.

Bottom line...my heart says somehow please keep both, but given just one choice then pick Tee...but my head says Jonah all day.

Realistically I'm not sure we keep either one.

If it were me I'd tag and trade Tee for an extra 1st rounder and draft both he and Jonah's replacements with both 1st round picks.

This, tho I'm not sure we'd get a first (depends on the WR class). Of course we seem to have better luck with 2nd round picks so.....

Speaking of first rounders, what's the news on Murphy?

https://bengalswire.usatoday.com/2023/11/07/bengals-snap-count-takeaways-win-bills-myles-murphy/

Myles Murphy emerges and Bengals snap count takeaways from win over Bills

  • First-round rookie Myles Murphy played 10 snaps, or 17 percent of the total. Doesn’t sound like much, but it’s notable because it checks in as six more chances than Joseph Ossai got, which speaks to the trust he’s earning from coaches. He even got deployed in key moments, taking snaps on first and second downs while Trey Hendrickson came in as a pass-rush specialist on third down. It’s very notable that he’s coming along after he entered the season a question mark to even be active on game days and that could keep Hendrickson much fresher going into a possible playoff push.
  • ********or they're losing faith in Ossai.... hsh

As far as second round choices... Jackson Carman says "hello".

Could have been worse, I guess, we could have drafted Leatherwood.

BUT... yes, generally speaking we do very well in the second round.

You may be right.

If they lose Higgins they could draft

WR Rome Odunze..who fits the bill.

6'3' 215lbs..4.45

If they lose Jonah they could draft Big Amarius Mins at RT..

6'6" 340 lbs

Both are ranked around 5th at their positions so should be on the board.

Getting a low to mid 2nd rounder for Tee would give them a pick for a corner as well..

Absolutely impossible to say that 6 months out from the draft. We have no clue what’s gonna happen between now and the end of April.

But Reader's replacement will also likely be needed. If Tee is tagged and traded - the most likely move - then Reader cannot be given the franchise tag. Only tag per team, no matter if that player is then traded or not.

I think Reader will be extended.

The core of the defense..

Too valuable to lose.

If that were the case, Reader should have been extended this past offseason like Wilson and Burrow. Believe his age and injury history are working against him. He is having an excellent year though. Maybe the front office will try to find an acceptable deal before he becomes a free agent, but it feels like less than a 50 percent chance to me.

There is zero chance they tag Reader. I hope they resign him to a 3 year deal and let him retire  Bengal, but he wont be tagged. If we don't resign him I would be very surprised if we spend a top pick on a NT, you can get those guys in the mid rounds. Reader himself was a 5th round pick

He is heading into the final year of his contract and is set to hit free agency before the 2024 season. He has been an incredible asset, especially against the run, in the middle of the line, and despite his age, he would be a solid player to extend. Spotrac predicts his contract would be somewhere in the vicinity of three years for $47 million.

I'd do that contract.

I vaguely remember a quote about Bill Walsh (?) about excellent (but aging) vets. He had a knack of getting rid of them a year before they hit the skids bad.

I certainly don't want to lose a whopping 5 starters to free agency - Higgins/Boyd/JWilliams/Reader/Awuzie. I know most of them will be gone but hopefully not all.

Sample as well.

My perfect and realistic offseason is to extend Reader, and Sample, trade Tee for a 1st round pick and draft a RT and WR in the 1st round. I think you let Boyd and Awuzie go, as Tuner is playing really well, and I think you can get some production between Yoshi and Jones for the #3 spot.

So would I.

These "despite his age" quotes

seem overboard since he just turned 29.

He's a force in the middle that makes Trey Sam and BJ's  job much easier.

Do it so that the money is upfront. Gives you time to find a suitable replacement and if he does fall off at 32 you can cut him.

04/14

Re-signed TE Drew Sample (UFA-Cin.).

Not sure for how long  but I did recall hearing it.

We wanted him to be a blocker and receiver.

He a good blocker.

That's what they wanted to help the oline

Kinda cool to watch him rumble for that TD
