For their sake I hope not. 

 

Years ago I warned some libertarian friends of mine that if we did not deal with the inequality issues you'd get stupid people who would pull something like that and the response would create a police state. We're getting closer to that.

Man every libertarian I've met was basically anarchocapitalist with a very bizarre concept of the world around them or really just Republican but wanted legal drugs. 

 

I'd also suggest our reponse to 9/11 already created the police state & the framing of that as patriotism is a big part of the authoritarian mindset we're dealing with now. Weaponizing that fear to convince us compassion is weakness and strength comes from the ability to commit violence.

 

Almost a quarter century later the Taliban still rule Afghanistan & all the militant nationalist rhetoric has created a steady stream of radicalized US citizens routinely committing domestic terrorist attacks fueled by that same xenophobia.

 

The traitors that attempted the coup are a product of all this & I expect will continue to be a threat for a long time.
