Bill Bergey Dies

He had been battling cancer. I {vaguely) remember him as a good Bengals LB befire being sent to the Eagles.

He was a very good LB. But we fleeced the Eagles in the trade and the multiple picks they have us contributed to our 1981 Super Bowl team.

But Bill helped anchor an Eagles defense in need of some toughness and talent. This led to their own appearance in Super Bowl XV.

While I agree about our return, Burgey was a monster for years with the Eagles.

Bengals got 1977 first-round selection, Wilson Whitley, and first- and second-round picks in 1978, Ross Browner and Ray Griffin.

The WEBB defensive line (Whitley, Edwards, Burley, and Browner) was the basis of the 1981 defense.

I recall that Back in the Day  fans using the term

"3rd and 44" because every third down play by the opposing

team they threw at 44... and usually converted.

How could Burley, Whitely and Browner be on the same Bengals line if Whitely and Browner were obtained in the trade for Burley?

They were not. Whitley and Browner were draft picks in the trade for Bill Bergey

Gary Burley was a DE. Bengals traded LB Bill Bergey to the Eagles for picks which became Wilson Whitley and Ross Browner (and CB Ray Griffin, younger brother of Archie). 

The WEBB line was pretty good. Whitley and Edwards were as good a DT combo as anyone had. Burley and Browner were pretty good pass rushers.
