AFCN Offseason Thread (Flacco highest paid Player in NFL HISTORY)

I know this isn't AFCN news (anymore) but I thought you guys would enjoy a good laugh ...

Ed Reed (hip surgery) admits he might not be ready for Week 1.

Reed's injury hoodwinks keep getting worse for the Texans. "I plan on being back for Week 1," Reed said Wednesday. "But as you’ve known me for the longest time, I’m going to be smart about my injuries and make sure I’m there for the later part of the season when the team really needs me." Reed has gone from being ready for the start of camp, to potentially returning "midway through it" to not a guarantee for Week 1. Reed could still easily end up being ready for Week 1, but it's safe to say he would have never gotten his three-year, $15 million deal had the Texans known the true extent of his injury. Apparently, ...the Texans need a change on their medical staff.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Colts took that division this season.

The #Steelers young OLine better not run into any more injuries or stabbings. Here's what they have behind them:

There is Kelvin Beachum, who may have to be the No. 1 replacement across the board. That means one injury and he's no longer a backup, like the knifing of Mike Adams.
After that? There is John Malecki, a backup guard who may be able to play center. And, and, and . . .
Tackle Guy Whimper? He’s experienced, but not the kind that would make Ben Roethlisberger breathe easy. Whimper has not done well anywhere and Beachum was the first man up when Adams was hurt.
Here is the list of the rest of the offensive linemen on the Steelers’ 90-man roster:
Guards – Nik Embernate, Justin Cheadle, Chris Hubbard.
Tackles – Mike Golic, Jr., Mike Farrell, Joe Long.
Center – Joe Madsen.

Gordon on brink of one-year suspension

Posted by Mike Florio on June 9, 2013, 8:07 AM EDT
gordon1.jpg?w=204AP

The unconventional imposition of a two-game suspension plus a two-game fine on receiver Josh Gordon has raised plenty of questions about the potential consequences for his next violation of the league’s substance-abuse policy.

According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, it’s believed that the next violation by Gordonwill result in a one-year suspension.

Gordon’s statement subtly but distinctly creates the impression that he was suspended for only one violation, arising from taking cough syrup that contained codeine.  But no player gets to the point where one violation triggers a suspension under the substance-abuse policy unless there have been multiple prior violations.

The ultimate question is whether Gordon’s two-game suspension plus two-game fine places him in Stage Three of the substance-abuse program.  If so (and per Cabot he is), Gordon now rests on the brink of a one-year suspension — like Jaguars receiver Justin Blackmon and Cardinals linebacker Daryl Washington.

It’s an unwelcome development for the new regime in Cleveland, which lost its second-round pick in the 2013 draft because the old regime used the pick last year to acquire Gordon in the supplemental draft.  The chatter in league circles is that former G.M. Tom Heckert and former coach Pat Shurmur lobbied aggressively to use the second-rounder pre-emptively on Gordon.

If they had any inkling that the team could be sold within weeks after the 2012 supplemental draft (and their boss, Mike Holmgren, surely did), it makes sense that they would want to go all in with Gordon.  To stay employed beyond 2012, they needed a big season.  So why not borrow against a draft that they wouldn’t be presiding over if they didn’t turn things around?

They didn’t, and they’re gone.  Gordon will be gone for at least a year if he can’t navigate Stage Three of the program without another violation of the policy.

“He’s a really talented guy,” one source with knowledge of Gordon’s career told PFT.  “It’s too bad if he can’t figure it out.”

If Gordon didn’t isn’t figuring it out via his two-game suspension, he never will.  He’ll lose nearly $150,000 in salary, and he faces a possible attack on a portion of his $2.3 million signing bonus.  Under the labor deal, the Browns may try to recover 2/17ths of the $575,000 allocation for this year, which equates to $33,823 that he’d have to pay back to the Browns.  (Owner Jimmy Haslam prefers not to think of it as a rebate.)

Time and again, we hear from team executives who realize that many players smoke marijuana.  It becomes a problem only when the player gets caught — and when the player can’t or won’t choose playing over smoking.

For Gordon, the accidental nature of his latest violation (if his excuse is truthful) makes the situation a bit less dire.  Either way, he’s now one accidental or intentional violation away from spending a year away from football.

Jarvis Jones trying to break Steelers' trend

I was aware of how the Pittsburgh Steelers rarely start rookies. Since the Steelers selected tight end Heath Miller eight years ago, only one first-round pick (center Maurkice Pouncey) was an immediate starter for Pittsburgh.

But I didn't realize how long it's been since the Steelers put a rookie in the starting lineup on defense. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ed Bouchette provided an eye-opening history lesson on this subject.

The last rookies to start on the Steelers' defense were nose tackle Casey Hampton and inside linebacker Kendrell Bell, both of whom did it in 2001. Hampton became a five-time Pro Bowl player while Bell only lasted four seasons in Pittsburgh.

The only rookie to start at outside linebacker for the Steelers since 1970 has been Jack Ham. That was in 1971. To put it in perspective, that was the second year for Three Rivers Stadium, which is currently a parking lot.

While the odds seem stacked against Jarvis Jones, he isn't battling history. He just has to beat out Jason Worilds, an underachieving second-round pick from 2010. The Steelers didn't show much faith in Worilds when they tried to restructure James Harrison's contract (instead of just cutting him immediately) and used the No. 17 overall pick on Jones in April.

As the Steelers wrap up their offseason spring workouts today, Jones has stood out to the coaching staff.

"He's showing us things, and, if he keeps showing those things he's going to be a big part of that, hopefully," linebackers coach Keith Butler said. "The best thing for him is his background, he played linebacker at Georgia, so he understands concepts as opposed to being a defensive end who doesn't know anything. He's picked some things up. There's a lot we're throwing at him right now, as we do everybody. He's still learning, but he's learning at a quicker pace than most guys we drafted at that position as a defensive end."

Report: Browns rookie LB charged with attempted murder

By Mike Singer | CBSSports.com

June 26, 2013 10:20 am ET

Cleveland Browns rookie free agent Ausar Walcott was arrested on Tuesday and charged with attempted murder after allegedly punching a man outside a gentlemen's club in New Jersey, the Record reported.

Walcott, 23, punched the man in the head at around 3 a.m. on Sunday, according to police detective Andrew White.

The victim, 24-year-old Derrick Jones, was taken to the Harlem Hospital Center in Manhattan where he remained hospitalized in critical condition as of Tuesday, the paper reported.

Walcott turned himself in to authorities on Tuesday morning and was charged with first-degree attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault and third-degree endangering an injured victim. He was expected to be sent to Passaic County jail on Tuesday night, and his bail was set at $500,000.

The Browns are aware of the situation but said they won't comment because of the "pending legal matter."

Walcott was signed by the Browns on May 13. The team's website lists him as a 6-2, 230-pound linebacker from University of Virginia.

While at Virginia, Walcott and two of his teammates were suspended following an altercation on the James Madison University campus. The charges were eventually dismissed.

Browns release Ausar Walcott

Taking a cue from the New England Patriots, the Cleveland Browns announced they have released rookie linebacker Ausar Walcott, who was arrested Tuesday and charged with attempted murder for allegedly punching a man outside a club in Northern New Jersey.

This comes a few hours after the Patriots cut ties with tight end Aaron Hernandez after he was arrested.

It's the first time the Browns have made a move with a player who was arrested this year. Linebacker Quentin Groves (solicitation) and defensive end Armonty Bryant (drunken driving) remain on the team after being arrested earlier this offseason.

Walcott was an undrafted rookie out of Virginia. According to Elias, he was the 29th NFL player arrested since the Super Bowl. That's an average of one player arrested every five days since Feb. 3.

Browns just can't stay out of trouble

Cleveland Browns rookie linebacker Ausar Walcott was arrested Tuesday and charged with attempted murder for allegedly punching a man outside a club in Northern New Jersey, the latest incident in a troublesome offseason for the Browns.

Over the past three months, the Browns have had their owner investigated by the FBI, three players arrested (for drunken driving, solicitation and now attempted murder) and one player suspended for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

When it comes to reality shows, this is beyond "Hard Knocks." This is CSI Cleveland.

The Browns can change owners, general managers and coaches. The embarrassing headlines just don't change. This is more than bad luck. These are bad decisions.

Everything was supposed to change when the Browns went from absentee owner Randy Lerner to the more hands-on Jimmy Haslam. Except Haslam pleading ignorance in the rebate fraud scandal surrounding his family-run truck stop business doesn't paint a good picture. Being clueless is not the trait you want in a leader.

Other than the Browns adding first-round pick Barkevious Mingo to their revamped pass rush, the team has been making news for all of the wrong reasons since April:
  • Linebacker Quentin Groves, who was signed as a free agent, was arrested during a prostitution sting on April 17.
  • Rookie defensive end Armonty Bryant was arrested for driving under the influence on May 3, six days after he was drafted in the seventh round and eight months after he was arrested for selling marijuana to an undercover officer.
  • Wide receiver Josh Gordon was suspended for two games and fined two additional game checks by the NFL for failing a drug test. Gordon said he tested positive for codeine, which was in cold medicine prescribed for strep throat.

This latest incident is more disturbing than the others. Authorities told The Bergen Record that Walcott punched Derrick Jones in the head early Sunday morning outside a club in Northern New Jersey. Police say Jones is in critical condition.

Signed as an undrafted free agent last month, Walcott has been charged with second-degree aggravated assault and third-degree endangering an injured victim in addition to the first-degree attempted murder charge. This isn't the first time Walcott has been arrested. In January 2011, he faced charges of assault and battery from a fight while he was at Virginia. Walcott was suspended from the team but was reinstated after charges were dropped.

The Browns aren't the only team making headlines for legal matters. The New England Patriots released tight end Aaron Hernandez after he was arrested Wednesday morning, more than a week after an acquaintance of the tight end was found dead in an industrial park near his house. And please don't ask if the Browns would be interested in signing Hernandez. This offseason has been rough enough already for the Browns.

Dude.  If things aren't bad enough for the Patriots, now they are being linked to the Cleveland Browns.

Not to put a damper on the fun but imagine the media fallout this team would be facing if the gal Pacman punched in the face hadn't gotten back up?

That would be bad, but I don't know that it would be hugely worse than the KC shootings and the Dallas DUI death in the last few years.
