Updated: 9:15 p.m.

Free agency dawned Tuesday afternoon and in a marked contrast to last year the Bengals watched the opening flurry while reaching out to several free agents that included their own as well as others.

After spending more than $120 million in cash last season in wake of the frenzy that followed the lockout, the Bengals touched base with their own free agents before they went on the market at 4 p.m. and then lined up visits with other free agents.

The Bengals don't confirm visits but indications from NFL sources as well as published reports said they spent Tuesday setting up multiple trips into Cincinnati. Numerous outlets reported that Giants starting Super Bowl right cornerback Aaron Ross is headed for a visit to Cincinnati this week.

Ross, a first-round pick in 2007 out of Texas, has started 41 games for the Giants and 31 in the last two seasons. Ironically, he was selected a pick ahead of Florida safetyReggie Nelson, one of seven Bengals' starters that hit the market Tuesday.

With Leon Hall on track in his comeback from an Achilles injury, Ross would add experience to a corps that includes the other starter, Nate Clements, and third-year playerBrandon Ghee, as well as an expected draft pick. Plus, they could pursue two of their own in Kelly Jennings and Adam Jones.

ProFootballTalk.com also reported that Bears tight end Kellen Davis, a 6-7, 265-pound masher, has scheduled the Bengals for one of his visits.

Defensive end Frostee Rucker, one of their starters, has already begun visiting other teams with agent Jimmy Gould. Gould wouldn't name the teams but he did say he continues to have "ongoing talks," with the Bengals.

Nelson and end/tackle Jon Fanene appear to be in the same boat. Nelson's agent, Hadley Engelhard, said Monday night that Nelson would go to market while also talking to the Bengals.
The Bengals emerged from last year's first 48-hour free-agent rush with three defensive starters. But with the salary cap again set at $120 million and the club's biggest names looking at free agency in the next two years, this time around the club appears to be seeking mid-tier free agents as well as their own players.

An ESPN.com Tuesday night that said teams had a choice to take their extra $1.6 million cap room from the Redskins and Cowboys in 2012 or 2013 seemed to confirm Cincinnati has its young stars in mind. The Bengals chose 2013. That's when the contracts of Pro Bowlers Geno Atkins and Jermaine Gresham, as well as left end Carlos Dunlap, are up. These aren't big name players but I think they are solid vets who can help this football team get better.

Ross was a starting cb for the defending Super Bowl champs, yes he's struggled with consistancy but he can make plays. Bell is a very good guard, definitely an upgrade over anyone on the roster. I like the idea of teaming Kellen Davis with Gresham, Davis is a physical freak who can do it all from the TE position. He's big enough to block but can also get down field with his 4.59/40 speed. I really think Langford is another Fanene type of guy, he can play anywhere on the DLine.

They all seem like good value guys.

Three free agents to make visits

03/13/12 at 8:06pm
• Written by jreedy

While Chicago, Tampa Bay, Buffalo and Washington were making big forays on the first day of free agency, things were pretty quiet around One Paul Brown Stadium. Then again, it has been the Bengals habit to stay largely out of the fray for the first couple days.

When Tuesday’s 4 p.m. opening of free agency arrived, their 20 unrestricted free agents hit the market. The representatives for defensive ends Jonathan Fanene and Frostee Rucker said they had discussions with the team but that nothing resulted.

Rucker’s agent, Jimmy Gould, said that discussions with the team would continue but that they would be making visits to other teams. Fanene’s agent, Angelo Wright, was also expecting offers from a couple teams in the next day or two.

The Newark Star-Ledger reported that the Jets have targeted safety Reggie Nelson but have not lined up a visit yet.

According to a league source, the Bengals will host cornerback Aaron Ross on Thursday. Ross was a first-round pick by the Giants in 2007 who started 15 games this past season and had four interceptions.

It was a bounce back year for Ross, who battled hamstring injuries in 2009 and played in only four games and bounced around the defense in 2010 with only one start.

With Leon Hall still coming back from his Achilles injury and Adam Jones and Kelly Jennings being free agents, Ross would be a nice veteran addition to a cornerback unit that could be light on depth and experience.

Pro Football Talk reported late Tuesday that the Bengals are one of three teams that Bears tight end Kellen Davis, who had five touchdowns in 18 receptions, but is looked at as more of a blocking tight end. The Bengals would be in the market for a veteran second or third tight end with Donald Lee and Bo Scaife being free agents.

This time around? Hobson, dont even bother trying to spin it, we all have memories.

This is EVERY time around. Sometimes it works OK, sometimes not.

Anyway, there are still a SHIT ton of FA's out there. I hope we at the very minimum address G. Just one good guard. Jake Bell doesnt fit that mold.

Ross would be ok, but I think we'd still draft a 1st round CB.
Langford would also be alright, but I'd rather keep the players that know the defense. They have similar productivity.

BENGALS: The team has set up three free-agent visits: Giants cornerback Aaron Ross, Bears tight end Kellen Davis and Rams guard Jacob Bell, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. The Jets have shown an interest in Bengals free-agent safety Reggie Nelson, according to the Newark Star-Ledger, but New York is also expected to talk to safeties LaRon Landry and Brandon Meriweather. The agents for Bengals free-agent defensive ends Jonathan Fanene and Frostee Rucker spoke to the team, although nothing has been finalized, the Enquirer reported. Hensley's slant: Of the Bengals' visits, the only one that stirs any interest is Ross, who started on two Super Bowl teams. He would be an experienced nickel back for a team that might not re-sign Adam Jones and Kelly Jennings in free agency. There's really no sense to panic yet on Nelson, who will draw interest from a handful of teams. Cincinnati soon has to start looking at bigger name guards as well as running backs and wide receivers.

Insider Analysis Grade 71

Expert's Take

Bell is a decent-sized guard with excellent foot quickness, agility and body control. He relies on technique and athleticism more than power and raw strength. He is quick to get a fit and shows excellent foot agility as he works his blocks but is not the most powerful drive blocker. He can roll his hips and can leverage his blocks but lacks the hip power and strength to create a new line of scrimmage. He is most effective in a zone blocking scheme that asks linemen to occupy opponents and let the ball carrier pick a side. He understands blocking schemes and angles and is quick to adjust on the move. He has shown durability issues.

Insider Analysis

Expert's Take

Ross has good length and athleticism. He has good ball skills and was one of the more active defenders in the Giants secondary this season. Ross is an instinctive player with great vision to leverage the ball. He isn't always physical as a run support defender but can get ball carriers on the ground. He runs well but isn't explosive and is best in combination zone coverage schemes.

This thread is fucked up. (for me anyway)

It doesn't have a quick reply box at the bottom (for me anyway)

And I have to quote a previous comment to even try and comment to this thread.
And sometimes it doesn't even bring up a way to post even when I do that.
So I have had to close the window and start all over. Have had to do that about
10 times now.

Is happening in Explorer and Chrome.

Insider Analysis

Expert's Take

Davis has outstanding size and strength with good athleticism for the position but was very raw in terms of route running and the position's nuances. He has developed his receiving skills by using his length and strength to get separation and is able to run well after the catch. He shows power at the point of attack and is able to stay connected as a run blocker.

Insider Analysis Grade 70

Expert's Take

Langford has great strength and power but appears to be too one-dimensional in his pass rush package. He is more of a run stopper, leveraging defenders and restricting running lanes. He has powerful hands but can be inconsistent about shedding quickly. He feels pad pressure well and rarely loses his gap responsibility. His range is limited inside out to the ball but he is a consistent effort player.

[*]70-79: Good Starter

Solid starter who is close to being an outstanding player. ... Has few weaknesses and usually will win his individual matchup but does not dominate in every game, especially when matched up against the top players in the league.

Yeah. Pardon me if I no longer post in this thread. It's not worth the hassle and has
already given me a head-ache.

another take it for what it's worth, but all their other posts are posts reporting other stuff that has been confirmed elsewhere.

Honestly, I'm totally fine with us signing back Nelson, and maybe looking at a FA guard otherwise, i'm 100% confident, the bengals will draft 2-3 solid starters and possibly 1 or 2 more probowlers. In which case we'll need our cap room to sign all these guys we're drafting long term.

I know this is the excuse the bengals are currently making, and I'm fine with it, but it only works if they actually extend these players this season and not let the cap room go to waste.

Gresham, Dunlap and especially Atkins need extensions. In fact i think Atkins should be extending with a big 5-6 years contract totally front loading it this year very soon.

Very intrigued by Langford, been reading on him and he sounds like a powerhouse DT in the 4-3, phins beat writer Omar Kelly has been glowing about him, he's ranked 34th on PFT free agent list and I think 65 on cbssports list. Seems like a similar player to Frostee who can play both spots, maybe better against the run than rucker but not as good as a rusher
