!!!!!WITH THE 116TH PICK THE BENGALS SELECT TE ORSON CHARLES!!!!!

Recommended Posts

I absolutely love this pick BPA period. It seems me to like having covered most of the needs in FA the bengals are covering all the major spots with playmakers so that we dont see major drop in talent if a player goes down :gobengals:

Edit: I could have just said creating excellent depth instead of all the blabbering meh. Me back to studying now....

Overall Football Traits

Production 1
"2009: (13/3) -- 23-374-16.3-3 2010: (13/12) -- 26-422-16.2-2 2011: (14/14) -- 45-574-12.8-5 "

Height-Weight-Speed 4
"Rocked-up athlete with very little body fat, but shorter than the average tight end prospect and lacks prototypical bulk. Top-end speed is slightly below average though plays faster on film. "

Durability 1
Appeared in all 40 games (29 starts) during three seasons at UGA.

Intangibles 3
Outstanding football character. Team captain. Hard worker. Good student. Inducted to University of Georgia's Student-Athlete Leadership Academy in 2011. Named to Athletic Director's Honor Roll three times and to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2010. Arrested and charged with DUI and minimum speed or driving too slow in early March 2012.

1 = Exceptional2 = Above average3 = Average4 = Below average5 = Marginal

Tight End Specific Traits

Separation Skills 2
"Uses hands and quick feet to quickly get off the line. Has developed some savvy with his release. Is quicker and more sudden than other top TE prospects in class (Fleener, Allen) but needs to take advantage by running crisper routes. Could make sharper cuts at top of stem and can drift downfield on crossing routes. However, he does show some craftiness as a route runner. Uses tempo and upper body to get defenders off balance and set up breaks. Quick enough to separate from mot linebackers. Athletic ability and frame make him a nightmare matchup when he lines up in the slot. Located downfield seams in zone but could do a better job of adjusting route and settling into windows on intermediate routes. "

Ball Skills 2
"Snatches ball with hands away from frame. Consistently catches ball thrown above head. Shows ability to adjust and has above average body control. Can catch the ball in stride and explode up the field, but once in a while will take eye off it and drop a pass he should catch. "

Big Play Ability 2
"Not as dangerous as former Florida TE Aaron Hernandez (Patriots), but fast enough to get behind most linebackers working against man coverage and work the deep middle against zone. Can explode through a crease. Occasionally makes first defender miss but is a bit of a straight-line runner after catch and does not show much wiggle in space."

Competitiveness 1
Great competitor. No afraid to work middle. Tough runner that fought for yards after contact. Flashes a mean streak. Not afraid to mix it up with bigger defenders

Blocking 3
"Violent hands and powerful upper body (benched 225 pounds 35 times at the combine). Flashes ability to stun defender with initial punch. Typically gets in good initial positioning, creates initial surge, keeps feet moving and uses good leverage. Also fights hard to sustain. But he lacks size as an in-line blocker and struggles to sustain as a result. Has narrow hips and lacks an anchor. Works to keep pads low but sometimes can't help rising up. Athletic enough to adjust to moving targets at second level but angles need to improve and he needs to be more decisive. Occasionally appears to uncertain of responsibility in space. "

Draft Analysis:

Bucky Brooks' take: The Bengals continue to add talented weapons to their offense with the selection of Charles. He is an explosive vertical threat with the athleticism and burst to create problems for defenders in space.

6'2" Height

32 1/2" Arm Length

251LBS. Weight

9 1/4" Hands
Overview

Charles is a big, athletic and flexible tight end. He has decent size and runs pretty well. He was a regular starter the last two years and had over 500 yards receiving as a junior. He is capable of blocking on the line immediately and is a very reliable short-yardage pass-catcher. If he can get a little bigger, he'll be more of a mismatch against linebackers in the short game, and could be drafted as early as the third round.

Analysis

Strengths
Charles is an athletic mover, especially when triggering off the line of scrimmage. He has good power, can fight off hand jabs at the line and is savvy enough to get back to his route. He uses his body well underneath to shield himself from defenders when working against zone coverage and has very reliable hands, which could make him a go-to option on third downs in the NFL. He is still developing as a blocker but has all the physical traits, including strength and a solid frame, to be successful. He is competitive and will likely work hard to hone his skills.

Weaknesses
Charles is a very straight-line runner and could have issues separating from NFL defenders, who will be savvy enough to diagnose his routes. He looks unaware in-phase and is far from being able to set up defenders or get them off-balance. He is flat-footed and has trouble bending to break quickly in his routes. He has decent wiggle and speed after the catch but isn't much of a deep threat and was utilized mostly in the short passing game at Georgia. He beat defenders in college with size and power, but that will be much more difficult to do in the pro game.

What he brings: In addition to his ability to get open and create after the catch, Charles makes up for his marginal size with upper-body strength and aggressiveness as a blocker.

How he fits: In this Jay Gruden West Coast offense, they would like to upgrade their TE in the passing game. Jermaine Gresham is a solid all-around starter, but Charles gives them a chance for some interesting two-TE sets. He is a guy that can flex or lineup wide. He is underrated on yards after the catch. QB Andy Dalton will probably like him as an outlet receiver.

Bengals take TE Charles in fourth

Posted 1 hour ago

Geoff Hobson Editor Bengals.com

In the quest to find a young tight end to back up Pro Bowler Jermaine Gresham, the Bengals tapped Georgia junior Orson Charles in the fourth round Saturday to start the final day of the NFL Draft. The 6-2, 251-pound Charles is seen as a good all-around player who can do a little bit of everything. He lit up the combine repping 225 pounds 35 times, breaking the tight end record held by fellow Georgia product Ben Watson.

The Bengals went to the Georgia well one more time as the 6-2, 251-pound Charles becomes the sixth Bulldog on the roster, joining wide receiver A.J. Green, right guard Clint Boling, right tackle Dennis Roland and defensive linemen Robert Geathers and Geno Atkins. After Atkins in 2010 and Boling in 2011, it's the third straight year they took a Georgian in the fourth round.

Charles says he has stayed in touch with Green during the offseason and consulted with him about whether he should come out early and Green advised him that it had to be a family decision.

"What he did teach me was to go hard in every practice. How you practice is how you definitely do in a game," Charles said. "I'm definitely going to be in his pocket trying to work with him and just stay in the film room with him. I definitely have good tight end I can look up to and (pattern) my game."

Hayes loves his work ethic and had to tell him over the phone to cool his jets. He doesn't have to get here until the May 11-13 rookie minicamp.

"Essentially it was in my head I would come up there today and start working with some of the guys on the team and statr to get familiar with how Andy Dalton throws and hang out with A.J. and try to come in and make an impact in my rookie year."

Charles had a blip on his radar last month with a DUI after his pro day, but Hayes said he had no character problems before that and Charles vowed in his conference call with the Cincinnati media, "It will never happen again."

TE Charles a solid addition for Bengals

We can say these three things with confidence about the Bengals’ selection of Georgia TE Orson Charles in Round Four:

• Other draft prospects helped themselves more in the predraft process than Charles did. Charles had a March to forget. His pro day didn’t go especially well, and he was later charged with DUI.

• The Bengals love taking Georgia prospects. Charles is the seventh former Bulldog to be drafted by Cincinnati since Marvin Lewis became head coach in 2003. Three of those players — DT Geno Atkins, DE Robert Geathers and WR A.J. Green — are currently Cincinnati starters.

• The Bengals needed to bolster their TE depth behind Jermaine Gresham, and Charles was PFW’s No. 2-ranked player at the position.

Mix all of these factors together, and you have a logical fit between player and team. And it could be a wonderful fit, too, if Charles, who’s just 21 years old, continues to develop as a player.

There’s reason to believe he can. The 6-2 1/2, 251-pound Charles runs well, and he is strong, as evidenced by his 35 reps in the bench press at the NFL Scouting Combine. Although he's known primarily for his pass catching, he's a willing blocker.

"He gets after it," Georgia head coach Mark Richt told PFW in March about Charles' blocking. "He’s very strong and quick off the ball, which is very important, but once he gets contact, he can really accelerate his feet to where he can stick on a block."

I attended Georgia’s pro day in Athens, Ga., in early March. It was a very windy day, and Charles didn’t run as fast as he had hoped. He wasn’t impressive in some of the drills, either. But when he lined up and ran routes, he cut an impressive figure. He could be a nice seam-stretching threat for Cincinnati.

The Bengals, who have drafted well in recent years, got good value in Round Four with the selection of Charles.

No need to do anything with Lee different until cutdown, and maybe he won't be the one to go.

I watch a lot of SEC football, Trust me when I say that orson Charles is a much better player than his workout numbers show.

Same with Alshon Jeffery. Both of these guys are going to be solid NFL players. We just got great value for a 4th round pick.

I don't watch a lot of SEC football, but from videos people have posted of him my take is he doesn't play like a TE. And I mean that in very positive terms. I don't recall seeing a TE with such physical and aggressive approach to the game. He is balls to walls it seems on every snap.

just posted in the final grade thread, I think Charles will (next to Zeitler) make the biggest immediate impact on the team and will make the all-rookie team at TE at the end of the year.

Green + Gresham + Charles + ____ :o

I saw where somebody was calling him the Hernandez to Gresham's Gronk. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the other way around. I'm not that impressed with Gresham so far. Yes, he made the pro bowl, but more by default IMHO.

even though he backed in, Gresham still had to earn himself into that first alternate spot to get in.

Agreed. Along with Zeitler, he's the pick I think is going to change the complexion of the Offense the most.

Who do I think that about on D? Honestly? Burflict. I really do. Call me a dreamer, but...
