Georgia tight end Orson Charles was a consensus first-team All-SEC pick in 2011, before leaving school early for the pros. He was a big-time weapon in the Bulldogs’ pro-style passing attack, finishing his college career with a 14.6 yards-per-reception average and ten touchdown catches.

Charles sent up red flags, however, with far worse measurables in workouts than anticipated, a pre-draft agent change, and an early-March DUI arrest. Charles was likely scratched off a number of teams’ draft boards.

The Bengals are less bothered by character concerns than most teams, and they snatched him up at the 116th overall pick. In Cincinnati, Charles could develop into an excellent No. 2 tight end behind starter Jermaine Gresham.

Don't even think of this kid as another TE, he's basically an oversized WR and they'll line him up wherever they see a mismatch...whether it's in the slot, out of the backfield, split out wide or as a traditional TE. This kid is just a weapon period, almost the exact same player as Hernandez in NE. (taken at almost the exact same spot ironically)

Bengals weren't looking for TE, but took talented guy in Charles. He will play and his skills should push Gresham to keep getting better.

Are we not going to get a Running Back or Safety???
I don't think there's a safety available that would play. I guess they like Sands and Mays. And I don't think running back is that important this year. We already have 3. I think if we want we can wait til next year to draft 1.

Changed my mind from original grumpiness about the pick.
Pro Football Weekly Draft Guide has him listed as the Number Two tight end in the draft, top 50 pick.
Now I think its an excellent pick.
Big drop off after Gresham at the tight end position and he will challenge and probably knock off a couple of the
guys there already.
Very good pick.

Bengals have now drafted SIX of Mike Mayock's top 92 players.
Fire all the scouts and personnel people. Just draft off Mayock's board!

So I just watched the vids. The things that really stood out to me:

1) He runs an amazing screen. There's a clip at two minutes on that Florida vid where he looks to his right so convincingly that even I was fooled watching. An H-back that can run screens like this will be awesome.

2) Has AMAZING feel for the holes and seems in the zones. Seems to have a sixth sense of the spaces his receivers are making for him, and knows just when to turn back and expect the ball.

3) Definitely a willing blocker, and nothing showed me he was below average.

4) Missed a couple of money catches, but in general seemed to have extremely soft hands and natural catching ability.

5) Just really fluid and muscular with some YAC.

I likey!

Yeah, that's why I think his blocking is so good, lol. Definitely looks like he has a Vernon Davis Physique. If only he ran a 4.4 forty as well!

I think that's the key in doing your homework on guys. Is it a blip or a trend? Dunlap was a one time thing too it seems, but it scared off enough teams for him to slip. He's worked out.

TE Charles: DUI not indicative of character issue

TE Orson Charles, selected by the Bengals in the fourth round, received a DUI in March. While it was discussed in the draft room, coaches pointed out Charles had zero character concerns prior to the arrest. He was a team captain and Georgia leadership award winner. "It was a one-time mistake that will never happen again," Charles said. "That might have been the worst thing to ever happen in my life."
