The Bengals finished in the top 10 in both points and yards allowed last season, which earned a lot of compliments for the job done by defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.
Zimmer’s work has now been given some appreciation by the franchise as well. The Bengals confirmed Wednesday that Zimmer has agreed to a contract extension with the team. There were no details officially released, although Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the deal locks Zimmer up through the 2014 season.

The Bengals won their version of Beat the Clock, signing their final draft pick before they report to camp at Paul Brown Stadium tomorrow.
According to Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Bengals signed third-rounder Brandon Thompson Wednesday afternoon.

Notes: Hall, Jones appear ready to go; Zimmer extended; Thompson completes rookie deals

With the opening of training camp 48 hours away, the immediate cornerback picture seemed to be clearing up.
With first-rounder Dre Kirkpatrick expected to miss a month with a leg condition that won't impact him long-term, all indications were that Adam Jones is going to be able to line up for the first practice after missing a chunk of the spring with a hamstring problem.
And Leon Hall, the starting right corner making a big-time recovery from his torn Achilles, figures to make an appearance this first weekend of practices and maybe even take that first snap on Friday. That's been his goal since back in November, a week after undergoing surgery following his injury in the Nov. 13 loss to the Steelers at Paul Brown Stadium.
But it won't be a surprise if they go slower with starting left corner Nate Clementsafter he missed all of the spring workouts with pulled abdominal muscle. If he's not back in time to get ready for the Aug. 4 intrasquad scrimmage, no one is thinking he’ll also miss the Aug. 10 pre-season opener at PBS against the Jets.
ZIMMER EXTENDED: If you read between the lines at Tuesday's media luncheon, you figured defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer had reached a contract extension beyond this season. And on Wednesday, the Bengals confirmed it but didn't say for how long but it can be assumed it goes beyond next year, too.
Zimmer, who has re-upped for the second time, had two head-coaching opportunities this past February when he interviewed in Miami and Tampa Bay. The Bengals lock up one of their most successful coordinators in history as he guns for a third top 10 finish in the NFL rankings in his fifth Bengals season. The only comparable run was when the Bengals did it four out of the five years from 1972-76 under Chuck Weber and Howard Brinker.
The move comes a few months after the Bengals gave offensive coordinator Jay Gruden a three-year extension and they opened extension talks with head coach Marvin Lewis.
THOMPSON COMPLETES IT: Third-round pick Brandon Thompson became the last Bengals' draft pick to sign his deal Wednesday. Which means in both years of the new collective bargaining agreement's rookie wage scale the Bengals have signed all their picks before the heavy lifting begins.
The 6-2, 320-pound Thompson is a weight-room maven and says he's squatted about 600 pounds, benched about 500, and reps 225-pounds between 36 and 40 times. He's a stout, nose tackle type that's going to be ticketed to work behindDomata Peko and Pat Sims.

From all that I've learned from those close it Mike Zimmer deal is not thru 2014 but definitely thru the 2013 season [s]#[/s]bengals[/background]

So it's basically 1 year extension. He signed a 3 year extension before the 2010 season.

Well, I had cheese enchiladas for lunch yesterday and a squatted a lot of poundage today, too. A little short of 600, probably.

If it wasn't through 2013 than it wouldn't be an extension at all. Great reporting.

Mike Zimmer, Bengals reach contract extension

The Cincinnati Bengals and defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer have reached a contract extension, the team said Wednesday. The extension will keep Zimmer under contract through 2014, a team source told NFL.com and NFL Network's Albert Breer.

Zimmer, 56, is entering his fifth season running the Bengals' defense. Cincinnati has ranked in the top 15 defenses in each year under Zimmer. In 2007, the season before Zimmer's arrival, the Bengals ranked 27th in total defense.

Last season, Cincinnati ranked seventh in total defense, 10th against the run and was ninth against the pass. The team's 45 sacks ranked fifth in the NFL in 2011.

Zimmer's success in Cincinnati has led to his name being linked to NFL head coaching openings. Earlier this offseason, Zimmer interviewed for head coaching jobs with the Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers and he was mentioned as a candidate for the Indianapolis Colts head coach. Zimmer's current contract was set to expire at the end of the 2012 season.

Prior to arriving in Cincinnati, Zimmer was the defensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons (2007) and spent 13 seasons (1994 to 2006) with the Dallas Cowboys, where he was the defensive coordinator from 2000 to 2006.

Bengals' Zimmer Wants to be a Head Coach

Mike Zimmer is entering his fifth season as the Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator. And it appears he will be in Cincinnati even longer -- Zimmer signed a contract extension through 2014 earlier this week.
Zimmer has fielded a top 15 defense in each of his seasons as defensive coordinator in Cincinnati. The year before he took over the defense (2007), the Bengals ranked 27th in the league.
That type of turnaround and consistency has also put Zimmer's name in head coaching discussions.
"Honestly, I thought I'd be a head coach by now." Zimmer admitted.
He's held the defensive coordinator title since 1994. Zimmer was with the Dallas Cowboys from 1994 to 2006, then spent the 2007 season with the Atlanta Falcons.
"I would like to be one," Zimmer said regarding being a head coach, "I'm not obsessed with it, but I want to be the one holding the Super Bowl trophy."
If nothing else, Zimmer just wants to see if he can do the job. He realizes that not every assistant coach is cut out to be a head coach.
Marvin Lewis was once in Zimmer's shoes. Lewis was the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens and Washington Redskins before coming to Cincinnati. His record as head coach is 69-77-1.
However, the man Lewis replaced didn't do as well. Dick LeBeau was the head coach for three seasons in Cincinnati. His overall record as a head coach is 12-33, which includes a 2-14 season -- worst in franchise history. LeBeau went back to coaching the defense in 2004 and has been with the Pittsburgh Steelers ever since.

So one of the prevailing scenarios is this one...?

- Marvin steps "down" from the HC position, becoming the Bengals' GM
- Zimmer slides into the HC position
- Hue Jackson gets traded to Indianapolis to replace HC Chuck Pagano. Pagano becomes our new DC, and we get their 2014 1st round and a conditional 2015 1st/2nd round draft pick.
- Jackson then gets fired and comes back to Cincy - mission accomplished.
- Leslie Frazier trades Minnesota's 2013 1st and conditional 2014 1st/2nd round pick to us for Bruce Gradkowski.
- Frazier gets fired and comes back to Cincy to be ADC under Pagano - mission accomplished.

I love the undercover coaches.

But I wouldn't rule out a Mike Brown retires/semi retires Katie in charge, Marvin as DFO/GM, and Zim/Gruden HC scenario.
I think everyone in the org likes the Marvin as the face of the franchise that would then continue.
