I think McCalebb could potentially steal a spot.  They did bring up that gentleman from PS to play in the WC game last year at CB.  They could also go one less WR and one more CB since McCalebb could potentially play both.

not an awful idea if he can get in the 5'11" 180 range. And ya know, cover.

Wow, they can even make a guy grow an inch now? Our strength department is awesome! :)

I'm guessing they're thinking of grooming him for nickel.  He certainly has the the speed and burst.  I'd think there's more space on the roster for him at RB than CB though.  It's awfully crowded over there (assuming Prater and Ghee show up).  I guess we do have two old men, though, and IMO the practice squad was made to develop high-risk, high-reward guys for the future.

03/06/13 - 2013 Auburn Pro Day: Former Auburn football stars were trying to impress NFL scouts at pro day Tuesday morning. After a few Tigers impressed coaches at the NFL combine, there was plenty of buzz about Onterio McCalebb, Corey Lemonier, and company. Despite a poor 2012 season, some of Auburn's leaders still attracted attention from NFL scouts at pro day Tuesday. Scouts looking for Onterio Mccalebb had to hurry because of his blazing 4.26 40 time. "When I was up there at the combine, all the coaches asked what are your weaknesses and your strengths," McCalebb said. "I told them my strength is running and my weakness is catching the ball and blocking. But, you can always get better at everything you do." - Dayne Young, WRBL TV 3 News

Here's our reason. Helps to catch if you want to be the third down back.  Blocking is always nice too.

well we were both wrong about his NFL position

If he sticks it will be as the #6 cb and we'll never see him on defense. Kick and punt returner only.

yea I'm wondering if they'll go with an 11th DB maybe 1 light at RB or somewhere else, and maybe use McCalebb as a 3-way player in a limited role.

McCalebb did work out as a defensive back during Auburn's Pro Day from what I've heard

That's kind of odd. I think there's a 0% chance he beats out Prater or Ghee for the last spot.  Would have thought he;d had a better chance as the 4th RB or 6th WR.

well, potentially they'd keep an extra CB than they would have.

Again, it may just be that he has a wide open spot waiting for him - on the practice squad.  As I mentioned earlier, I think given our depth the team is really starting to focus on developing the practice squad in the right way.  Not just guys to practice against, or to fill a few obligatory positions just in case - but a true incubator for cultivating talent.

well that's interesting.

#Bengals additional CFAs: Auburn RB McCalebb listed at CB; LB Campbell of New Mexico Highlands; K Sharp of Oklahoma State

McCalebb to get seriious look as returner. Sharp, leading NCAA punter as well as kicker, listed as K but should get some punts.

Yes, Thompson is now No. 98 RT @StevO_1960: @Bengals Did Brandon Thompson switch numbers? Saw Fragel was now #79.

Interesting about McCaleb. His shot will be as a return guy... he played WR and RB at Auburn, but I don't recall that he played CB there.

I believe #98 was Thompson's number at Clemson.

The Bengals added to their list of college free agents Wednesday morning when they added Auburn running back Onterio McCalebb, New Mexico Highlands linebacker Jordan Campbell, and Oklahoma State kickerQuinn Sharp.

The 5-10, 170-pound McCalebb, the fastest man at the NFL Scouting Combine with a sub 4-3-second 40-yard dash, is making the switch to cornerback for the May 10-12 rookie minicamp at Paul Brown Stadium as the Bengals try to find a position for him while auditioning his return skills. Too slight to play NFL running back, McCalebb could also get a look at receiver.

Sharp, the first three-time All-American in Oklahoma State history, finished his career as the nations' leading active punter with a 45.9-yard average as well as one of the top kickers with an 84.7 field-goal percentage. After leading the country in touchbacks for four straight years, the Bengals have listed Sharp as a kicker but he figures to also get some chances to punt.

The 5-11, 240-pound Campbell is a high school rival of Bengals WILL backer Vontaze Burfict in Corona, Calif. After leaving USC following an off-field incident and never being able to play at Louisville because of glitches in his transfer, Campbell surfaced at Highlands last season and racked up 10 sacks, 24 tackles for loss, and 104 tackles in 11 games. He'll probably start out next week playing middle linebacker.

The CFA class stands at 12.

Cool.

It'll be interesting to see how McCalebb does next weekend.

Coupla interesting things about Bruce Taylor, who fits our profile of taking some guys who've had a down year following a dominant one:

02/20/13 - 2013 NFL Combine, Medical watch: Virginia Tech's Bruce Taylor enjoyed a fine career but he never took the next stop that seemed possible after a breakout 2010 campaign in which he posted 91 tackles, including 15.5 tackles for loss and six sacks. His junior campaign started off well but a Lisfranc injury robbed him of the final four games and while the physicality he'd played with throughout his career certainly remained in 2012, Taylor didn't cap his career as dominately as scouts had hoped. He seemed to play better as the year went on, however, leading to some speculation that he'll be even better in 2013 after a full removed from the serious foot injury that had ruined seasons for NFL stars Santonio Holmes, Darren McFadden and Matt Schaub, among others, in recent years. - Rob Rang, NFLDraftScout.com

The Cincinnati Bengals have invited Nathan Jones, a versatile back capable of playing tight end, fullback and half back, out of Marian University, according to a source. Jones, who also played linebacker in nickel packages, is a two-time captain on a team that won the 2012 NAIA championship. As a tight end, Jones posted 48 receptions for 610 yards receiving and seven touchdowns, another 125 yards rushing on 15 carries with two scores on the ground.

Equally impressive is that Jones earned First Team All-MSFA Conference honors both as a tight end and as a linebacker. At the Ball State Pro-Day he posted: 40YD time of 4.66 (he regularly ran 4.58-4.62 times in training), 1.61 10YD split, 2.69 20YD split, to go along with a 34" vertical, 9'2" broad jump, 4.47 short shuttle, 7.12 L Drill and 23 reps on the bench press.

JB Scouting Services, specializing in small school prospects, rated Jones as the sixth-rated tight end among all small schools.

“He’s one of our most versatile players,” head coach Ted Karras Jr. told the Sun-Times. “We also use him as a fullback and H-back. He’s one of the top tight ends in the country in receptions.”

I'm telling you, we wanted the HBack from Harvard, but even I didn't think he'd go in the 4th (Ravens, bastards).

We were heavily exploring Hbacks pre-draft and brought in a TE with some Hback experience (Smith).  It's very possible the FB position disappears from this roster.

(Oh, and Jordan Campbell has some nastiness FB in him, too).

i heard one of the pro personnel/ draft experts (maybe casserly) weighing in on that lisfranc injury, who said it's almost always a 1.5 year recovery time....that it's rare to see a player come back 100% in the 1st year. so maybe that's what we're looking at with this kid.

I like the prospect of having a guy come in as UDFA that had the talent to play at Louisville and USC.  Hopefully he was just off the radar and is a bit smallish for others to take notice.

We've got to find someone who can cover Torrey Smith on deep routes

I don't know if Onterrio is this guy, given his inexperience and height, but at least he has the speed to keep up

My favorite of the Bengals UDCFAs by far is LB Jordan Campbell -- good to great measurables, just got to see if he can play football now

I think our corners can.  When he's burned the Bengals in the past its mainly been safeties or an aged Clements.
