The Bengals participated in a joint practice with the Atlanta Falcons on Monday as both teams prepare to face one another in their first preseason game of 2013. Since practice took place in Flowery Branch, Georgia, we didn't have any Cincy Jungle staff members attending and reporting the day's events. We turned to Twitter to gather updates for our readers.

Before we run through Monday's recap, it's important to note that Vincent Rey suffered a knee injury today. The full extent of the injury is unknown, but he was on his feet watching practice after it occurred. It is believed to be a knee ligament sprain.

  • NFL Network's Albert Breer was attending Monday's practice. Both he and the Enquirer's Paul Dehner Jr. offered a photo at the start of practice.

  • The day began with special teams as Kevin Huber punted to the Falcons, and it didn't take long for things to get a little tense on the field.

The former offensive coordinator for the Bengals was let go by the Jacksonville Jaguars after the 2012 season led by head coach Mike Mularkey resulted in a 2-14 record. Bratkowski also spent the 2011 season as the Falcons quarterback coach after being offensive coordinator on the 4-12 Bengals squad of 2010.

  • At the end of the day, the practice seemed to be enjoyable to the players and coaches as they enjoyed the friendly competition.

Plenty of camaraderie between two teams. More like old friends playing pickup than opponents in game. #Bengals

The Bengals have one more practice on Tuesday before preparing for Thursday's preseason match.

Brandon Ghee looked to be a bit gimpy after practice. Could be muscle cramps but we'll see tomorrow

  1. This is the sixth year in a row the Falcons have done this and Atlanta coach Mike Smith thought went about as smooth as possible today.

  2. Jay Gruden analysis: Offense seemed sloppy early, feeling out how this would go. Liked how played late. Most everyone had good moment.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. _ The Bengals emerged from Monday's first practice here against the Falcons with a bruise on defense and encouraging work in the passing game on offense in some of that famous Georgia humidity thaty has beenn missing from the Ohio Valley this training camp.

Linebacker Vinnie Rey, who has emerged as the Bengals special teams leader this camp, injured his knee midway through the practice but was able to walk around on the sidelines for the last half of the workout. Cornerback Brandon Ghee also left early with what appeared to be cramps.

After a slow start, quarterback Andy Dalton hit all but one of his 10 passes in the 7-on-7 dril and then went 5-for-7 in the last period of the day, an 11-on-11 team drill that featured his touchdown pass to wide receiverMohamed Sanu from about 20 yards out.

With wide receivers A.J. Green (knee) and Andrew Hawkins (ankle) not on the premises and Marvin Jones(hamstring) not working, Dalton got good work from not only Sanu, but wide receiver Brandon Tate and rookie running back Giovani Bernard.

Sounds like the offenses of both teams were pretty much unstoppable today. Guess that figures with no film study, no game planning, no experience playing against each team's receiving corps. Will be interesting if either team's defense can toughen up tomorrow after at least getting a feel for the receivers out there.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) Cincinnati's Michael Johnson couldn't believe how quickly the afternoon disappeared as the visiting Bengals a shared practice with the Atlanta Falcons.

The defensive end says he enjoyed almost everything about Monday's change of pace in the Bengals' training camp. ``It was fun,'' Johnson said before adding the 90-degree Georgia heat was a factor.

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis and Falcons coach Mike Smith also liked the first of two days of shared practices before the teams meet in their first preseason game on Thursday night.

Lewis says he'll have ``great tape to evaluate'' as he makes decisions on roster spots.

In an attempt to guard against injuries, there was no tackling to the ground. Smith had no update on Falcons linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, who left practice early.

Awesome!!  I was flipping through the channels one night and saw this hideous show on Bravo TV I think it was with

some wig wearing troglodyte and a football player.  Turned out the dude was Kroy Biermann.  I had never heard of

the guy before that to be honest.  Poor fella.  She might give Andre a run for his money though.

Bengals cornerback Brandon Ghee is working hard during training camp to climb the roster and find more snaps on defense. Injuries have sidelined most of his career, and limited his overall production during seasons that he wasn't hurt.

He's played on the first-team unit when players were sitting during OTAs, so the talent (and the confidence in his talent) is there. But he's in a precarious position on the depth chart between Adam Jones and Dre Kirkpatrick; not to mention his history with injuries.

During Cincinnati's session against the Atlanta Falcons on Monday, Joe Reedy with the Cincinnati Enquirer noted that Ghee "limped off the field". Initially you're thinking, "oh no." This is a player that we want to succeed, which only helps to enhance a cornerback roster that could generate an argument of being one of the more stable and top-five cornerback rosters in the NFL.

However, "he pushed himself back out" on the field "to finish the practice at the persuasion of Mike Zimmer." You have to love the motivation from Zimmer and Ghee's willingness to fight through it. Either way, we find it extremely hard for Ghee to find an NFL career beyond this season if he's unable to produce this year.

Falcons show Bengals work is needed

FLOWERY BRANCH, GA. — Standing over the center, Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan directed traffic. Flexing receivers out and changing coverages as the Bengals defense moved with them.

For every move with the first team, Reggie Nelson checked with the rotation of safeties standing next to him for that play to adjust coverages.

After running through the same plays against the same players for the least two weeks, Nelson needed an opportunity to test communication as he leans on a new playing partner at the back of the defense.

“They got some good athletes and they got a good program going,” Nelson said. “We got to get better. That is what we are here for, we are here to get better. Good for our defense to go against some of the good talent that is in the league.”

Ryan had his way most of the day, though, didn’t complete any passes over 20 yards in the air during 11-on-11 drills. Utilizing his weapons underneath Ryan picked up completions.

Nelson and Adam Jones were both victimized by the combination of Ryan and Harry Douglas, but Nelson returned the favor with a pass breakup of his own.

How well the defense did in positioning themselves against audibles will be better learned once coaches review the video. Regardless of what defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer sees when the video runs, it will be a teaching tool he’s been waiting for.

“It’s a bunch of stuff that we haven’t really practiced,” Zimmer said.

ZIMMER IMPRESSED WITH DRE: Mike Zimmer doesn’t hand out compliments easily, specifically during training camp. Yet, he didn’t hesitate to express his happiness with the progress of Dre Kirkpatrick.

Last year’s first-round pick missed all but five games spent primarily on special teams. He proved the time spent on the sideline injured were not wasted.

“I thought he’d be a lot more rusty than what he was and actually he’s done way better. He makes plays on the ball, which is good. He’s got the length, which helps him. He was probably humbled a little bit last year. That’s not always a bad thing.”

GILBERRY REUNITES: Wallace Gilberry joined the New York Giants as a rookie free agent in their 2008 season. During the time he bounced around their preseason roster and practice squad, he found a quick friendship in Pro Bowler Osi Umenyiora.

As Gilberry’s career took him to Kansas City, Tampa Bay and finally Cincinnati, he’s kept a tight bond.

“Birds of a feather flock together,” Gilberry said. “He kind of took me under his wings and we have stayed in touch like brothers.”

As practice began Monday he walked away from the Bengals warmups and into the Falcons yelling his name across the field. They shared a hug and talked for an extended period.

“He’s been doing it so long and on top of his game,” Gilberry said, “what other big brother to have in this league than a guy like Osi Umenyiora?”

PETERS TALKS CINCINNATI TIES: University of Kentucky grad Corey Peters enters his fourth year in the league as a starting defensive tackle with the Falcons. He spent time chatting with current Bengals and former UK teammates John Conner and DeQuin Evans.

Peters also spent much of his offseason training at Ignition in Mason with Clif Marshall and a number of the Bengals defensive linemen.

“This football thing is a very small fraternity, it’s not a lot of guys in the NFL,” he said. “It’s good to be able to talk to guys who understand what you are going.”

LAKEFRONT PROPERTY: The Bengals are living in the lap of luxury on Lake Lanier while they stay in Georgia. The team saddled up at a resort surrounded by a golf course and miles of hiking trails with majestic views.

With an off day on Wednesday, many of the players expressed an interest in getting out on the water, course or any of the other amenities the property offers.
