Keeping our enemies close: 2023

Jones has been stellar thus far for the Browns with no QB sacks or even hits allowed in his 2 games. He's playing with their ones with Conklin out.

If we could run the ball effectively, it would keep defenses from playing 2 deep safeties vs Chase and Higgins. And keep drives alive in short yardage situations. Last year we faced more light boxes than any other team in the NFL. And Mixon averages 3.9 ypc, well below the league average.

The Bengals have made significant schematic changes in the way they run the ball out of the shotgun. This is an excellent article if you haven't read it.

Wonder how long they leave it open until it goes behind it?

I find that on a lot of sites, you are free to view a designated number of articles before you are forced to pay. Guessing the paywall is appearing for those who have exhausted their free article count

I was hoping we'd draft Washington and Dawand Jones and improve our running game. We could have had both (plus a pick next year) if we'd taken the trade down offer from the Titans.

The finny thing is, even if they had taken the trade down offer with the Titans, they still wouldn't have taken either of those two players. I've listened to enough podcasts with various coaches and front office people as to which players they liked but weren't able to get in each round. Those two players were never mentioned even once. That is what happens if they aren't on your big board at all for whatever behind-the-scenes reason.

And those would be examples of poor draft evaluations then. It's not like Tobin has a great record of drafting O-linemen and TEs. But Jones and Washington had great tape so they weren't exactly hidden.

Duke Tobin and Zach are locked in..

Their conversations must run deep into what Zach wants in a player and Duke going out and finding them..

All GM's have hit and misses.

Tobin and his crew have taken them to SB level]...

And the Blackburn women are smart enough to let it roll..

Absolutely no question that those two guys have great game tape. It's why they were often both mocked in the first round by media analysts who watch a lot of tape. But the NFL teams do interviews, background checks, read medical reports, etc. If a prospect with a great tape doesn't go where his ability suggests he should be drafted, then it is something else causes him to fall down big boards or even get removed altogether.

Thats where draftniks lose out on picking players.

Med reports and the rest you mentioned plays a huge factor in who goes where and when.

It also seems like Baltimore is becoming the place where former all-pros who are now past their prime go to get their last pay check (Calais, Odell, Clowney)

Since the Ravens care about winning the "off-season" perception game, more than actually winning a playoff game (which they know they can't do now with Shiesty as King of the North.)
