AmishBengalFan
The Bengals don't have a Ring of Honor or other way of honoring their historical greats, but with the teams' 40 anniversary season coming up next year, maybe it's time they do that. Here's my list of the 10 initial inductees (in alphabetical order), 4 of whom I would recommend for jersey number retirement:

Ken Anderson, QB, 1971-86
Jim Breech, K, 1980-92
Paul Brown, HC, 1968-75
Isaac Curtis, WR, 1973-84
Bob Johnson, C, 1968-79
Tim Krumrie, NT, 1983-94
Anthony Munoz, OT, 1980-92
Ken Riley, CB, 1969-83
Joe Walter, OT, 1985-97
Reggie Williams, LB, 1976-89
Retired Numbers: #13 - Ken Riley #14 - Ken Anderson #54 - Bob Johnson (already retired) #78 - Anthony Munoz Who would your choices for a hypothetical Bengals Ring of Honor be? Please limit your choices to 10 players/coaches, with no more than 3 retired jerseys (in addition to the already-retired #54 of Bob Johnson). AmishBengalFan
BTW, I believe a player must have 10 years in Stripes to be considered (or 5 full years for a coach), which would result in the following players/coaches being eligible for enshrinement: 16: Ken Anderson, QB, 1971-86 15: Ken Riley, CB, 1969-83 14: Reggie Williams, LB, 1976-89 13: Jim Breech, K, 1980-92 13: Anthony Munoz, OT, 1980-92 13: Joe Walter, OT, 1985-97 12: Bob Johnson, C, 1968-79 12: Jim LeClair, LB, 1972-83 12: Isaac Curtis, WR, 1973-84 12: Eddie Edwards, DE-DT, 1977-88 12: Tim Krumrie, NT, 1983-94 12: Bruce Kozerski, OL, 1984-95 11: Glenn Cameron, LB, 1975-85 11: Max Montoya, G-OT, 1979-89 11: Rodney Holman, TE, 1982-92 11: Lee Johnson, P-K, 1988-98 10: Bob Trumpy, T-WR, 1968-77 10: Dave Lapham, G, 1974-83 10: Pat McInally, P-WR, 1976-85 10: Louis Breeden, CB, 1978-87 10: Boomer Esiason, QB, 1984-92, 97 8: Paul Brown, HC, 1968-75 8: Sam Wyche, HC, 1984-91 The following active players already had 10 seasons at the end of 2005 and would be eligible upon retirement: 12: Rich Braham, C-G, 1994-2005 10: Willie Anderson, OT, 1996-2005
eva4ben-gal
good topic, I like your list and don't think I would change it but I would add Esiason, Montoya, and Wyche as "second ballot" entries. And Ickey should get consideration even though he only played a few years just because he is still one of the most popular Bengals of all time. scharm
Any ring of fame has to have it's limits. I say start with 3 players. Issac Curtis, Ken Anderson, and Anthony Munoz. In addition to having the names on the stadium walls, they should steal one from the Reds and have Bronze figures placed in the green space areas around PBS. Lateralus
Esiason would definately be in there in my opinion... Munoz Curtis Anderson Basnight (long live the faceplant)
Jason
I would not limit the eligability to 10 year players. My Ring of Honor would have (excluding the 10 originally posted by Ahmish): Boomer Esiason QB LeMarr Parrish CB Cris Collinsworth WR Eddie Brown WR Max Montoya G Pete Johnson FB James Brooks RB Eddie Edwards DE Bill Bergey LB David Fulcher SS I would retire Boomer's number. |Numbers|
Want to get on the ring of honor make the Hall of Fame. Anthony Munoz, OT, 1980-92 If we are to take away that, then most positive figures in Bengal history; Sam Wyche, Paul Brown, Boomer Esiason, Kenny Anderson, Bob Johnson, Tim Krumrie, Ken Riley, David Fulcher. However, can we also have a ring of shame and put that ring around the toilet bowl ? Bruce Coslet, Dave Shula, Artrell Hawkins, Stanley Wilson, Akili Smith, Dead Beat Dad, Mr. DUI (damn that fits alot of them when I think about it, we may honor them near the beer vendors), and yes this list is a whole lot longer than the ring of honor... Second ballot entries would be Dick Lebeau (gets it half way down the bowl), Mike Brown (also half way down the bowl), Tiger Johnson for giving life to the idiot which named the stealers stadium (yes, he is one of the CEO's (?) at Heinz). I probably need to explain the Mike Brown one a little better. A decade is a long time to suffer, therefore it will take him longer than a few good seasons to wipe his name off the list but I will have to say it is a good start already. I agree that Bengals in the HoF should be included in the first Ring enshrinee class, which would put PB and Munoz on the Ring. The inagural class should also include Johnson, since his number has been retired (I see number retirement as a higher honor than enshrinement in the Ring). The inagural class should also inlcude those Bengals who (in our estimation) have been snubbed so far by the HoF, which would include Anderson and (arguably) Riley. That last part is important. After all, if the Bengals go so far as to honor their past members, showing the HoF that we think Anderson/Riley are worthy of honors in Cincinnati should send a signal to Canton. But if we don't honor them in Cincy, it would make their Canton case even harder to prove. Inagural RoH class = Paul Brown, Anthony Munoz, Bob Johnson, Ken Anderson, Ken Riley If the ring expands beyond five, I would propose inducting the next members in the order of their first year in Stripes. If they're from my original list, the order would be - Isaac Curtis, Reggie Williams, Jim Breech, Tim Krumrie, Joe Walter. Whether they go in at once or a couple every other year makes me no nevermind, as long as I gets my money by next Friday.

Jason
The NFL's "ban" on retiring numbers is not absolute, and is also relatively recent. You notice that with a few exceptions, most of the retired numbers are pre-1990.
AmishBengalFan
Two other potential RoH sources: (1) From the "Temple" video at the start of games at PBS (alphabetically): Ken Anderson, Isaac Curtis, Boomer Esiason, Tim Krumrie, Anthony Munoz, Ken Riley. (2) From the new "named" Suites at PBS (alphabetically): Ken Anderson, Cris Collinsworth, Isaac Curtis, Boomer Esiason, Tim Krumrie, Anthony Munoz, Ken Riley Looks like the Stripes like Anderson, Curtis, Esiason, Krumrie, Munoz and Riley --- twice each. There are others on the PUP/IR lists that do not count against the roster. You cannot retire numbers without getting into triple digit jersey numbers for active players. What about training camp when you hav 80+ on the team. Rarely will numbers be retired in the NFL.
