It sounded Saturday like kicker Shayne Graham is going to take at least part of the remaining preseason off to rest his groin injury. He thinks he'll be back for the Sept. 13 opener.

"I'm not worried about it. I know I'll come back strong. It will give me time to rehab it," said Graham, who said he's had some of his best years when he rested in the preseason. "I would say (that I'll kick in the opener), but I'll just take it a day at a time."

Graham had a similar injury last year in which he missed his first two games as a Bengal in seven seasons. The team picked up Dave Rayner to kick against the Jets and Steelers in October, but he's in another training camp with the Redskins and the Bengals may now have to look younger to pick up a guy to kick this Thursday night against the Rams and maybe the week after in the preseason finale against the Colts.

Indications are the Bengals are going to try out some kickers this weekend, so don't look for wide receiver Chad Ochocinco to repeat Thursday night's gala against the Patriots. If rookie punter Kevin Huber had been right-footed, we may never have seen The Ocho. Huber kicks lefty, but the Bengals didn't have a guy that has held from the left side yet in camp.

Also, two Bengals who have been among the players who have played the least this preseason were released Saturday with the departure of rookie free agents Marlon Lucky and David Richmond. Lucky, a running back out of Nebraska, didn't play until Thursday night and carried twice for 15 yards. Richmond, a wide receiver from San Jose State, didn't play in either preseason game.

The move gives the Bengals 77 players on their roster, which has an 80-man limit until the cut to 75 Sept. 1.
if Shayne isn't worried about it I AM! he missed a 20 yarder first preseason game! what if we came down to a field goal to win the game in the opener and it was like a 40 yarder ? i'd be very worried.

His kick was just a mishit. He hit it a little higher than usual and it ended up being a knuckle ball instead of a regular spin.

It's all about timing and with a new holder they are still getting used to each other. Nothing to worry about at all honestly.

I've been watching a lot of preseason games and there have been quite a few missed short field goals. Mostly in the first week. I imagine it takes some time to get used to kicking in game situations, especially with a new holder.

Oh and the 1 Shayne missed was on a low snap that Huber didn't hold well.

How is that possible?

He didn't know because he didn't feel it until midway through warmups. It was a last minute decision not to make things worse by doing game kicks that could have been from any distance.

He'll be fine. He's felt this pain before, and he's just trying to head it off before it gets worse. I guarantee you his rehab will be very good for his legs, and hopefully the groin will heal nicely before it's necessary to kick in game situations. His best kickoffs, etc were after missing much of the preseason with a similar issue a few years ago.

This is often why many teams carry two kickers in the preseason. It helps keep one person from doing all the preseason kicking.

Sis, this seems to be a recurring issue for him. Do they have any explanation for it?

Don't go to the bengals.com messageboard and don't search for a thread called "Shank Graham". Otherwise you might see SIS all throwing stats around and stuff...and me in the foxhole with her....

Kicking game hard to get a hold of
By Joe Reedy • jreedy@enquirer.com • August 22, 2009

The circumstances surrounding what has become the most famous extra point in Bengals history became clearer Saturday.

Special teams coach Darrin Simmons found out 20 minutes after kickoff of Thursday's game against New England that Shayne Graham would be unable to kick due to a tender groin. Normally the punter becomes the emergency placekicker. But Kevin Huber is left-footed, so no one was available as a holder. And that's how wide receiver Chad Ochocinco found himself booting a PAT and a kickoff.

"A year ago, we were going through the same thing with Shayne. Chad came up and said, 'Let me do it.' We let him kick field goals in practice, but not kickoffs, and he did great," Simmons said. "I knew he could kick some, but not as good as he did. It's just kind of neat the way it happened the way it did. It's kind of neat. It adds to the book I'll have on my career when it's all over.

"I'm glad he was able to go out and help us. I'm just glad we won it. It was a preseason game, albeit, but you never know if something like that is going to come up in a regular-season game and you have someone you can go to."

Simmons said the target is 1.28 seconds from the time the ball is snapped until it is kicked. Ochocinco clocked in at 1.33.

"When he kicked it, I knew it was going to be a good hit," Huber said. "Once I saw his PAT, it didn't surprise me that he kicked off. He's strong and athletic enough."

On the kickoff, though, Simmons did say Ochocinco was close to getting a delay of game penalty.

GRAHAM UPDATE: This marks the third straight year Graham has been hampered by an injury. He missed part of the 2007 preseason with a hip injury and missed two games last year with a groin issue.

Coach Marvin Lewis said it is likely the team will sign a kicker this week. If the groin injury is the same type as last year, Graham should be ready for the season opener Sept. 13

"I'm just going to do everything I can to make sure that I'm healthy when the time comes," Graham said. "I'm just going to do what I do, and when it feels good I'll go. I've had injuries like that in the preseason and I've had some of my best years after that. I'm not worried about it; I'll come back strong and rehab it."

TWO RELEASED: Halfback Marlon Lucky and receiver David Richmond were waived. Both were signed as college free agents.

Lucky had two carries for 15 yards in Thursday's win against the Patriots; Richmond did not play in either preseason game.

With those two releases and center Dan Santucci being placed on injured reserve Thursday, the roster stands at 77. The first cut, to 75 players, is Sept.1.

SMITH UPDATE: Agent Alvin Keels will meet with the Bengals Sunday in hopes of ending the stalemate involving offensive tackle Andre Smith. Sunday is Day 24 since training camp started that the sixth overall draft pick has not been with the team.

While Smith is out, Lewis has been happy with the progress of second-year player Anthony Collins, especially in pass protection. Collins is starting at right tackle.

"He's at the point of attack and has his guy wrapped up good," Lewis said of Collins. "Anthony continues to answer every challenge put at him. That's what you want. He's probably grown up as fast as any guy I've been around up there. I'm glad to see him doing what he's doing and getting this opportunity."

Smith and San Francisco's Michael Crabtree are the lone first-round unsigned picks.

HARD KNOCKS: Through the first two episodes, ratings for "Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Cincinnati Bengals" are up 44 percent nationally compared to last year, when the program featured the Dallas Cowboys. According to Nielsen, the first two episodes were especially strong among males ages 25-54. The next new episode will air at 10p.m. Wednesday.

He's a kicker?

I don't know. He works hard all summer. It's possible he went too many days in a row kicking before preseason, or maybe there was a day he just didn't get the right stretch in before practice? Or stood too long between drills, etc?

Many teams also have two kickers in preseason to halve the reps and keep the kickers rested to start the season strong.

I don't know what played a role. But I personally think we should have two kickers EVERY preseason for both competition, and to keep from overusing one guy.
