GREEN BAY, Wisc. – Talk about overcoming adversity.

After a heartbreaking loss to the Broncos last week, the Bengals had many things going against them during Sunday's game against the Packers. And after a first half where there were too many self-inflicted wounds, the Bengals bounced back and got their first regular-season win at Lambeau Field, 31-24.

Behind a 141-yard, 29-carry game from Cedric Benson, the Bengals were able to overcome two first-half interceptions by Carson Palmer to persevere and even their record at 1-1.

While Benson had a great game on offense, Antwan Odom had five sacks and became the first Bengal since Eddie Edwards to accomplish that. Edwards did that in the 1980 season finale. The Bengals ended up sacking Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers six times.

The Bengals took the lead for good on Chad Ochocinco's 11-yard touchdown from Palmer with 1:09 remaining in the third quarter. On 3[sup]rd[/sup]-and-11, Ochocinco beat Tramon Williams in coverage and made a shoestring grab to break a five-game touchdown drought. After getting confirmation of the touchdown, Ochocinco looked for the proper group and found it in three Bengals fans in the right corner of the end zone.

Shayne Graham then put it out of reach with a 40-yard field goal with 1:56 remaining.

It is the most points for the Bengals since they scored 38 in the 2007 finale at Miami.

Palmer bounced back to finish 15 of 23 for 185 yards and three touchdowns against two interceptions. Ochocinco had four receptions for 91 yards.

Green Bay falls to 1-1.

After the Packers got the ball to open the game and their first drive stalled, the Bengals got the ball on their own 37 and drove the length of the field to score, something they did only once last year (against Washington in Week 15).

The Bengals went 63 yards in nine plays, culminating in a Carson Palmer 5-yard TD pass to Laveranues Coles off a play fake. On the drive, Benson had 4 carries for 40 yards while Palmer was 3 of 3 for 28 yards.

Green Bay got the ball back and promptly tied it as Aaron Rodgers connected with Donald Driver on a 3-yard TD. Rodgers, who was 5 of 6 for 52 yards, had plenty of time on that drive and just waited for receivers to get open.

Palmer then threw an ill-advised interception to Charles Woodson on the first play of the next drive when Ochocinco overran his route. Woodson returned it to the Bengals 11 and Ryan Grant then went 4 yards in two plays later to make it 14-7.

In the second quarter, a 60-yard punt return by Quan Cosby set up the second touchdown when Palmer snuck it in on a 1-yard keeper to tie it.

After Green Bay went three-and-out on the next drive, Palmer suffered his second case of brain lock when Charles Woodson intercepted the pass intended for Daniel Coats and ran it 37 yards in for a pick six. The Packers did a nice job discovering coverages there in a nickel set and Woodson was there for the taking.

The Bengals then answered with one of the more harrowing 8-play, 80-yard drives that you will ever see. On 3[sup]rd[/sup]-and-33 from their own 8, Palmer completed a screen pass to Daniel Coats, who fumbled it short of the first-down line where it was recovered by Coles for a first down. On the next play, Benson and Palmer teamed up for a flea flicker and Palmer found Ochocinco for a 44-yard reception. Three plays later, Palmer found Chris Henry in the back of the end zone for a 5-yard score.

The Packers were driving late in the half and got to the Bengals 34, but Antwan Odom sacked Aaron Rodgers to take them out of field goal range. Mason Crosby's 55-yard attempt on the last play was no good.

Green Bay was trailing by 10 after Graham's field goal. The Packers drove down and got a 45-yard field goal by Mason Crosby to narrow it to a touchdown. Green Bay recovered the onside kick with 44 seconds remaining and drove to the Bengals 10 but could not get a play off in time.

The Bengals host defending champion Pittsburgh at Paul Brown Stadium next Sunday.

ANTWAN ODOM'S 5 SACKS

TIES BENGALS' CLUB RECORD

Despite 13 penalties for 100 yards, two Carson Palmer interceptions and doubters from sea to shining sea, the Cincinnati Bengals overcame all sorts of adversity to beat the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, 31-24, on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 20.

It was the Bengals' first victory of the 2009 and first triumph in five trips to Green Bay. They had beaten the Packers twice in Milwaukee, but never in Green Bay — until now.

Tailback Cedric Benson exploded for 141 rushing yards, Palmer threw three TD passes — one each to Laveranues Coles, Chris Henry and Chad Ochocinco, who performed the "Lambeau Leap" — and right defensive end Antwan Odom was spectacular.

Odom turned in the game of his life with a club-record-tying five sacks as the Bengals evened their record at 1-1 with the Pittsburgh Steelers coming to town on Sunday, Sept. 27, for a 4:15 p.m. game.

What should've been a blowout victory by the Bengals turned into a thriller with Cincinnati fans on the edge of their seats asking, "Are they gonna blow it again?"

Shayne Graham's 40-yard field goal after the two-minute warning gave the Bengals a seemingly comfortable — but not insurmountable — 31-21 lead.

But Green Bay, thanks to two long scrambles by quarterback Aaron Rodgers, blew down the field and elected to kick a field goal on an early down. Mason Crosby connected from 45 yards out with 0:49 remaining, pulling The Pack within 31-24.

Green Bay then recovered Crosby's onside kick and the Packers, with no time-outs, drove deep into Bengals territory before time mercifully expired before the Bengals could snatch a second straight defeat from the jaws of victory.

Quan Cosby returned five punts for a 22.0-yard average and unleashed a 60 yarder that set up a TD.

One of the game's turning points came deep in the second quarter when the Bengals — trailing 21-14 and facing third and forever — converted a lucky third down when tight end Daniel Coats caught a left-side screen pass, raced downfield, fumbled the ball forward when he got stripped, and the Bengals recovered.

It led to Chris Henry's 5-yard TD reception in the back of the end zone. Henry, who was split left, slanted to the middle and hauled in a high pass from Palmer, somehow keeping his balance and getting both feet down for the game-tying TD.

Palmer completed 15 of 23 passes for 185 yards and 3 TDs, and scored on a 1-yard sneak; Benson piled up 141 yards on 29 carries thanks to a solid blocking job by the offensive line; and Ochocinco had four catches for 91 yards (22.8) and one TD.

Ochocinco's 13-yard scoring reception in the third quarter gave the Bengals a 28-21 lead they wouldn't lose, and he found a friendly corner of the end zone in which he leaped into the crowd.

The player of the game was clearly Odom, who redefined the word "domination." His five sacks tied Eddie Edwards' club record. In a word, Antwan was unstoppable.

When the Bengals win, it's usually by mistake. They committed numerous mistakes, but overcame themselves to finally win a game.

It was Carson Palmer's first victory as a starter since the Bengals' 38-25 win at Miami on Dec. 30, 2007 — a span of 627 days.

Mind-boggling, eh?
