Their right to be dickfaces is in the same amendment. (ironically)

Exactly...

Ironically or on purpose? I'm thinking the latter...

Does it matter?

Both parties would be exercising their legal rights, correct? What makes one any better, or worse, than the other?

Just as those of us who are ok with this and disagree with the dickfaces can call you dickfaces. Dickface. :on_the_quiet:

1. It's not even a Mosque

2. It's not even at Ground Zero

3. There is already an Islamic Community Center 4 blocks away, this would be 2 blocks away from one corner of the giant hole. + There's over 100 Mosques already in NYC.

4. This is closer to an Islamic YMCA/Chef school than anything, with a swimming pool, basketball court, auditorium, culinary center and yes a prayer room.

5. There is already a strip club and a sex toy shop 2 blocks from the "sacred" ground zero. Plus liquor stores and a peep show.

6. There are Christian churches in Hiroshima & Nagasaki

7. Timothy McVeigh was raised as a Christian ... why not ban all Churches in Oklahoma City then?

8. Even Tehran, Iran allows for Synagogues to be built, and in fact has 4 of them!

9. WTC # 2 actually had a Muslim prayer room in it, and Muslims died on 9/11 in the towers as well

10. The Pentagon (also attacked on 9/11) has had in Mosque within its walls since 9/11 - for Muslims who work in the Pentagon.

1. Cultural center, mosque whatever. It is a religious establishment.

2. No it isn't, but it is pretty close. I am not against the idea but I can understand those that are.

3. Interesting information.

4. Again good information.

5. These organizations are secular. I also happen to be a fan of liquor and porn so maybe I am biased on this point.

6. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were hit in a declared war that had nothing to do with religion.

7. McVeigh was not a christian. He may have called himself one but his acts say otherwise.

8. I think it is great that they do. Hopefully countries like that continue to grant human rights to christians, jews, women and other minority groups in the ME.

9. And hopefully the new WTC will be as welcoming. I have no issue at all with representing all faiths.

10. The US military also has muslim chaplains. Muslim soldiers have fought and died along side christians, jews, women, blacks and so on.

You seem to proceed from the assumption that I am an ignorant person on this issue and to a point you may be right. That is why in my earlier post I said it was a tough issue. On one hand you have religious freedom mandated by our constitution and on the other hand you have questions about the timing of this and a question of respect for the victims and their families.

From a personal point of view I have no issue with a mosque or a "cultural center" in the area. But I do not presume to speak for people that live there and those that died there. Like I said, tough question with a lot of gray areas.

I think everyone here is acknowledging that they have every right to build the mosque right there, where they wish to do so. Constitutionally, legally, whatever, there is nothing that says they can't.

That said,

Let me ask this question...

What is the major push by this group to HAVE to build it in that location? I assume this isn't the only piece of property available. If they're wanting to build a newer facility why not just pick a different real estate location in the nearby vicinity? Go two blocks to the other side, away from ground zero, of the existing cultural center.

The frenzy is just that, media frenzy. But, wouldn't it just be simpler to have it go away?

Someone please pull up proof of some overriding value to this building being built RIGHT THERE. I ask again, why with all the screaming, etc. does this group insist on REQUIRING the center be built there?

You realize its not actually on but a few block from ground zero right?

Also as I understand it its because its close to the mausqe they already have there. Click the Salon link homer posted and then watch the interview with the wife of the man that wants to build it. Its a good interview.

I completely understand it isn't on "ground zero" and they already have some sort of other center a few blocks from this proposed site.

I'm not arguing any of that at all. Why not go away from ground zero 2 blocks from their existing center they have now? Instead of toward Ground Zero 2 blocks? It would still be 2 blocks from their existing facility, just in a different direction.

Just to stop all the hoopla. It seems that you'd / they'd get tired of dealing with the circus...

You don't have be a Tea Partier to have an issue with this mosque building jazz in NYC. Pat Condell is a hardcore liberal with this to say..

They don't have to. But if you're getting a shitpot load of backlash from all angles it would seem to me it would be simpler to just go another direction. That is just me.

The only other explanation is one of three...

1) Hard-headedness (we're not going to be told what to do)
2) There is some extraordinary value to this particular piece of land to this group
3) There is an ulterior motive (shit on the grave so to speak) to them wanting to put it where they are, which is driving this fire-storm.

They don't have to do anything. Just seems like it would be less issue-generating to go about it another route. They could even come off as "the bigger person" and extend the olive branch...

I dont know it seems to me people who are offended by it are largely ignorant to Islam to begin with. Islam didnt attack us on 9/11.

Further nobody has answered Homers point about the mosque inside the pentagon.
would you be referring to this...
Sometimes misidentified as the "Pentagon Mosque," the non-denominational Pentagon Memorial Chapel maintained by the Pentagon Chaplain's Office is where department employees who practice Islam can meet to pray.

Located at the site where the hijacked American Airlines flight 74 struck the Defense Department headquarters, the chapel honors the memory of the 184 victims of the 9/11 attack.

The 100-seat chapel is available to Pentagon employees of all faiths to come in prayer as they wish throughout the day. The Pentagon Chaplain's Office schedules weekly religious services in the chapel for Jews, Hindus, Muslims, Protestants and Episcopalians, as well as a daily Catholic Mass.
Not even close to the same thing... using it, as Senator Nadler did, to defend the Ground Zero mosque is intellectual dishonesty.
