Lock Geno up long term

Recommended Posts

This is a tactic commonly used by the Eagles. Throw a big signing bonus on a long, multi-year contract paying a substandard annual salary to your young draft picks that weren't picked in the first round, i.e. the ones making not too much more than the league minimum. I would say a typical extension offered by the Eagles happens after the end of year 2, giving a good-sized bonus on a 5 or 6-year extension. Usually it seems to work out quite well, but sometimes toward the end of the contract, sometimes the player gets unhappy (see Sheldon Brown as an example). Other Eagles I can remember who got extended this way include Mike Patterson (one of the best run-stuffing DTs in the league) and Greg Lewis (WR that never amounted to much).

I seem to recall some language preventing this type of thing in place under the new CBA, although it may not apply to Geno since he was drafted before the slotting system was put in place.

That could be his new sack dance. Kind of like how players on video games act like they are sitting on a dead guys head as a celebration.

And he could do it while simultaneously Tebowing. He would thank the Lord, on behalf of the sacked quarterback, for the nuts he's about to receive... Tebowbagging.

[edit:] Apparently, you can take the boy out of the 4th grade, but you never quite take the 4th grade out of the boy.

Funny that someone who hates Mike Brown so much apparently prescribes to his theory of contract extensions. The best teams in the league lock up their best players long before they become free agents. You get a discount for doing it early and you keep them throughout their prime. As a side note, MB has actually been pretty decent at doing this lately, except with JJ and some guys who got overpaid (steinbach etc).

Edit: it looks like he has made much more than a million or 2 at this point in his career. You throw a $5-10M bonus at him, escalate the salaries and add 3 years on the deal and you've got a great young DT locked up for 5 more years at a fairly modest salary cap #. No brainer.

Didnt we extend Geathers before his contract was up? After his double digit sack season? At 5 mil per? And he hasnt done shit since. Same with Peko minus the sacks.

Peko has been worth every penny.[/quote]

Agreed. Dude is supposed to eat blocks so others can get to the runner. It's not flashy, but it's a huge part of why we did pretty well against the run... Aside from the last two games.

We need players who can do something when he's eating up the blocks. He was slacking at points this year, though. But then again, everyone on D seemed like they went on a slump every now and then

We can't afford to lose Pat Sims, Jon Fanane and Frostee Rucker. All three are free agents this year. Clearing geathers big salary would go a long way in locking them up

I know Frostee is still in town.

Saw him at best buy in florence yesterday. Probably doesn't mean anything but at least he's still in town, so it can't be a bad thing.

Peko is a big reason Geno was able to do what he did. Geno's a smaller DT and he can't get the penetration he does on his own without other guys clogging up the line - he needs to get 1-on-1, where he usually wins. The two of them are a great combo, combine them with a real impact DE and you have a SICK line. I hope Carlos keeps growing into that guy, it seems like he was really fighting injuries for the last half of the year.
