Lock Geno up long term

Can someone tell me a non-qb that got signed to a long term deal like that after 2 years?
Robert Geathers signed a 6 year extension after 3 years in the league, 2 years before he would be a unrestricted free agent.

Andrew Whitworth drafted in 2006 signed an extension before the 2008 season.

That's 2 on our own team. Ready to admit it is a common practice yet?

If thats the case, then I say we wait until after next year. He keeps up the production, we lock him up before he goes apeshit during his contract year.

You wait until next year and it will take a huge bonus because his agent will be in his ear talking about only having to wait 12 months for a huge payday. Sign him now and you have the time value of money working for you.

Ill give you Whit, but you sure you want to use Gathers as your example? He's been pretty average since signing that deal.

I'm thinking they do it in the middle of next year...so technically it will be during his third year. They'll have to do it before a certain point so that they can put Cap money on the up coming year instead of future years. It would be really smart to do, because if AJ and Dalton continue doing what they are, they will eventually eat a lot of cap soon.

Yeah I could see them doing it midseason.

So with that logic, keep him unhappy for another season? Then it festers all next offseason, then he says tata. Do you think that we are the ones seeing the All Pro hype? What happens when a player outperforms his contract and is made to wait? You get a disgruntled player who will use any little injury to sit out extended stretches to bide their time to get to FA... ala Forte.

Correction... We are the only ones...

why do you assume he's upset now?

I wasn't arguing that signing Geathers was the best decision we've ever made just that it is a fairly common practice. And Geathers was a pass rush specialist who was turned into a starter after he signed. Geno played significant snaps this year and his play didn't drop off at all, it may have even improved.

Chad got an extension in 2003, I think.

Wasnt that done mid year? The OP is talking about doing it now, which was my point of contention. I have no issue if done mid-year if he's still playing at this level.

Carson also got his big extension at the end of the 05 regular season, after 2 seasons of play. It's not out of character at all for this team to pay its premier guys. That said, Geno will probably get his due at some point this coming season - doubtful in this offseason. Whit, Geathers, Peko, and Hall all got re-upped with years left on their deals. I wouldn't be surprised to see Carlos and Gresham in the mix for extensions either.

I don't think so. Just was too big of a contract for Mike Brown to match. Besides Steiny loves him some Budweiser and Ohio River fish'n!
Oh for criissake. We had FOUR Offensive line players to resign that year. Somebody was going to get squeezed out. Steiny was the least valuable, and thus was let move on.

This is why you stagger your contracts.

God, you're a moron.

So, I take it that you think signing Robert Geathers to a long term deal, after he had one good year, has been proven to be a smart move?

The Robert Geathers contract should be a reason why you don't do it. Same with the Ocho contract. And Palmer's deal.

I do. Starter on a good defense for multiple seasons.
