!!!THE COLTS @ BENGALS PRESEASON GAME THREAD!!!

I've thought both played well. I'm torn and have been throughout. Not sure who I'd keep if I was coach.
I think Skelton too slow learning system hurt him bad. May not be too bright ??

1181 Said it perfectly. You can teach Skelton the book and he'll catch on. But you can't teach Josh to accurately throw a pass.

With Lewis saying Lamur's shoulder popped out and back in, that indicates a dislocation. Could be anything from a month to season ender

Talked to a very dejected Emannuel Lemur. "Not sure how bad it is or what I 'm in for . God has a plan." #Bengals

that was early on. does he look to you like he he doesn't now have a grasp of this offense? i think you're letting the 1st HK program affect your thinking.

Fantasy alert: Giovani Bernard can score in the red zone.

In the Cincinnati Bengals' 27-10 victory Thursday over the Indianapolis Colts in the preseason finale, Bernard finished off the Bengals' first drive with a 1-yard touchdown. It marked the third 1-yard touchdown for the 5-foot-9, 208-pound Bernard. While starter BenJarvus Green-Ellis has been a touchdown machine (30 rushing touchdowns in the past three seasons), Bernard should get some chances to punch the ball in, if the preseason is any indication.

“To me, it’s all about determination and heart. How bad do you want that touchdown?" quarterback Andy Dalton said at halftime. "I really think anybody should be able to get 1 yard if you want it bad enough, no matter your size.”

Bernard showed toughness in the open field, too. After taking a dump-off pass from Josh Johnson, Bernard ran for 16 yards and delivered a hit on a Colts defensive back before going out of bounds. Bernard finished with 28 yards on five touches.

Overall, it was a crisp effort by the Bengals after a sloppy performance last week in Dallas. Cincinnati had one turnover (Cedric Peerman's fumble didn't lead to any points) and committed two penalties.

Here are my other thoughts on the final preseason game for the Bengals, who finished 3-1:
Dalton made a cameo appearance, leading the Bengals to a touchdown in his only drive of the night. He completed one pass for 18 yards, a short pass to Mohamed Sanu, who broke a tackle. Dalton's only other pass was an underthrown ball to receiver A.J. Green in the end zone, but Green drew a pass-interference penalty. The Bengals got the ball on the 1-yard line, where Bernard scored the game's first touchdown.
Linebacker Emmanuel Lamur was carted off the field in the first quarter with a right-shoulder injury. Lamur is one of the Bengals' top backups and plays in their nickel defense. If Lamur is lost for a significant amount of time, the player who could benefit the most is J.K. Schaffer, who had a mauling, third-down sack and an interception against the Colts.
Brandon Tate once again provided a spark on special teams. After scoring on a 75-yard punt return in his last preseason game, he set up the first touchdown with a 51-yard kickoff return. This latest big return happened because of great blocking by the Bengals, and Tate just had to hit the open lane.
It looks like John Conner will be the Bengals' starting fullback. He was the first fullback to play, and he was the lead blocker on Bernard's touchdown. Orson Charles, who has been battling Conner for the job, could still make the team because of his versatility. The Bengals may decide to keep Charles as the third fullback (behind Jermaine Gresham and Tyler Eifert) and cut Alex Smith.
Backup quarterback Johnson still struggles with his accuracy, but he can make big plays with his feet. He led the Bengals in rushing in the first half with 38 yards on two scrambles. As far as his passing, he was 4-of-5 for 26 yards and one touchdown on his first two drives (both scoring drives). His touchdown pass, a 3-yard toss to Marvin Jones, was on the same fade route as the incompletion thrown by Dalton earlier in the game. For the rest of the first half, Johnson was 3-of-8 for 41 yards. John Skelton, the Bengals' other backup, was 6-of-10 for 99 yards, which probably won't be enough to leapfrog Johnson for the job.
The first-team defense got pressure on Colts backup quarterback Matt Hasselbeck. Linebacker James Harrison nailed Hasselbeck on an inside blitz to force an incompletion, and defensive tackle Geno Atkins pressured on third down to rush Hasselbeck into another incompletion.

that's really good news if it did pop right back in vs. them having to set it. that wasn't the impression i got watching it happen, so if that was the case it likely better than my worst fears.

Rex Burkhead

On what could be a harbinger of things to come, the Bengals offensive regulars smashed to a touchdown with six runs in a seven-play drive in their only appearance as Cincinnati took a 27-10 victory in Thursday night's preseason finale against the Colts at Paul Brown Stadium.

The Bengals extended the lead to 20-3 four-and a-half minutes into the second half with the aid of five penalties on that first drive that turned into Mike Nugent's 33-yard field goal. And then jacked it to 27-3 with 5:27 left in the third quarter when rookie running back Rex Burkhead followed fullback John Conner's seal block for a two-yard touchdown run before a PBS crowd of 49,229.

But the Bengals couldn't avoid the devastating injury. Emmanuel Lamur, one of their two starting nickel linebackers slated to play in the neighborhood of 500 snaps, was carted off the field on the second series of the game with what looked to be a serious shoulder injury. Head coach Marvin Lewis said after the game that it popped in and out, indicatiion a dislocation. In the world of football, that can mean Lamur is out anywhere from a month to all season.

The Bengals regulars, working against three Colts defensive starters, took a 7-3 lead with 6:40 left in the first quarter when rookie running back Giovani Bernard bulled to his third one-yard touchdown run of the preseason.

“To me, it’s all about determination and heart," Bernard said. "How bad do you want that touchdown? I really think anybody should be able to get one yard if you want it bad enough, no matter your size.”

Quarterback Andy Dalton's one pass came on the sixth play on a third-and-two and it went for 18 yards over the middle when wide receiver Mohamed Sanu ran out of an attempted tackle by cornerback Josh Gordy. Starting running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis took two runs behind the right side and one up the middle for a total of 22 yards and Bernard added two more for eight yards behind the right side before he punched it in from the 1.

The physicality then spread to the backups and the Bengals finished with 191 rushing yards.

“We seemed to get to the line of scrimmage quickly and run our plays crisply. That’s really just what you’re looking for in a game like this," head coach Marvin Lewis said at the half. "Defensively, we got a lot of guys some snaps, and it’s always a good effort when the other team scores only three points.”

Dalton did try another pass from the four-yard line, an obvious option with wide receiver A.J. Green isolated on cornerback Darius Butler. Butler mauled Green on a fade in the right corner and drew a pass-interference call.

"We came out tonight and did what we wanted to do," Dalton said. "We moved the ball with the first offense, especially running the ball, and we scored a TD. As far as the season, I feel like we’re ready to go. We’ve played together well, I like the new elements we have, and I’m looking forward to going to Chicago.”

Bernard's touchdown run conjured up a slew of possibilities when the Bengals came out with the triple tight ends set of Jermaine GreshamAlex Smith and Orson Charles , plus fullback John Conner in the game. On the power play left guard Clint Boling pulled right, Conner kicked out safety Larry Asante and Bernard followed Charles for the score.

Charles and Conner are thought to be in a struggle for one fullback spot. But while the play displayed Conner's classic fullback blocking style, it also showed Charles's versatility and the problems Bengals can give people with a roster that may very well have four tight ends, counting Charles, and no fullback. Rookie tight endTyler Eifert (wrist) didn't play for the second straight game but says he'll be ready for Chicago.

But the key to the versatility that offensive coordinator Jay Gruden preaches is a physical running game that opens up his formation possibilities. In that first half the Bengals rushed it 15 times for 123 yards.

So the Bengals backups also pounded it on the ground, with running back Cedric Peerman offering another preseason finale MVP effort. The man who broke a 93-yard run in the '10 game and had a 17-yard catch last year in Indy, made a nifty move when he reversed his field after getting hemmed in and broke right for a 22-yard run that set up Nugent's 42-yard field that made it 10-3 with 1:07 left in the first quarter.

Backup quarterback Josh Johnson, who came into the game as the club's second-leading rusher, took off for 21 more yards on the next drive before chalking up his third touchdown of the preseason. He hit wide receiverMarvin Jones on a back-shoulder fade for a three-yard touchdown pass with 7:54 left in the half for the 17-3 lead.

Daniel Herron, trying to beat out Burkhead for the final running back spot, came into the game with a 6.1-yard average and added a 20-yard run late in the half to put the Bengals in a two-minute situation. The two rookie tackles, Tanner Hawkinson at left and Reid Fragel at right, held up pretty well as Johnson hit rookie wide receiverCobi Hamilton for an 18-yarder on third-and-10 and got a nice, leaping catch by wide receiver Ryan Whalen for 16 more on third-and-10.

But the drive got blown up on a sack by a blitzing Asante.

Fragel, who missed the first two games with a knee issue, left with what looked to be another one.

The first defense couldn’t get off the field against the Colts second-teamers led by quarterback Matt Hasselbeck on the game's first series and gave up Adam Vinatieri's 43-yard field goal 4:30 into the game as the Bengals had trouble tackling the short passes and screens.

After getting scalded on third down five days ago in Dallas, the Bengals gave up their third first down when on third-and-nine running back Vick Ballard slipped out of Lamur's attempted tackle on a dump pass. The third-and-long had been set up when SAM backer James Harrison forced Hasselbeck to unload an incompletion.

But on the next third down—a third-and-six from the Bengals 25—right end Michael Johnson got good pressure and cornerback Adam Jones had wide receiver Jeremy Kelley covered for an incompletion.

The tough thing about the Lamur injury is not only he the starter in nickel, he backs up both SAM and WILL and it's tough to see the Bengals replacing his cover skills. Linebackers coach Paul Guenther has compared rookie free agent Jayson DiManche to Lamur, a CFA last season. But DiManche is trying to make the transition to linebacker from college pass rusher and Lamur spent time on the practice squad before he got the call in midseason. Yet DiManche may now be going right to the roster.

With Lamur's injury, linebacker J.K. Schaffer's night had to be noticed. Thought to be in a battle for the last spot with DiManche, Schaffer had a sack in the first half and his interception set up Burkhead's touchdown. Now if Lamur's injury is severe, both may make it.

Burkhead also had a big night. He set up his own TD when his second-effort on fourth-and-short converted and he got the ball down to the 2-yard line on a six-yard catch and run.

Another battle being waged was going on in the trenches with backup center-guards Trevor Robinson andMike Pollak. From the second series on they were playing next to each other at either center or right guard and there was a chance both could make it. But Pollak, a former second-round pick of the Colts, left the game with seven minutes left with what looked to be a knee injury.

I was totally in Skelton's corner when they signed him, but Johnson has won me over. He is a complete change of pace that teams would not be prepared for if he had to replace Andy. I wish they could keep them both though.

That would be more true if the option-run QB wasn't the flavor of the week in the NFL,  Everyone will have to prep for running QBs, probably by knocking them into next month.

if all they wanted from charles was to be a lead blocker, he never stood a chance against someone like the terminator.
as for the back-up qb, or qbs in general, isn't poor accuracy like the worst atttribute. i'll take the dude skelton.

I was stating the obvious to all about Charles that's all. And I'll take Skelton as well. I think the guy can play if he's got decent protection.

Bengals' links: Determined to run the ball
August, 30, 2013 8:30AM ET

Here is what they're saying about the Cincinnati Bengals' 27-10 win over the Indianapolis Colts in the preseason finale:
  • Fighting for a roster spot, linebacker J.K. Schaffer finished with six tackles, an interception and a sack. "I know I went out and played hard. I left it all out there," Schaffer told The Cincinnati Enquirer. "It's out of my hands from here. I think the preseason went pretty well for the most part. There are still some things I need to clean up and get better at but we will see what happens from here.”
  • Backup linebacker Emmanuel Lamur injured his shoulder in the first quarter and needed to be taken off on a cart. Trainers worked on his shoulder and as the pain got worse the cart was called out, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported. “It slipped out and they slipped it back into place,” coach Marvin Lewis said about Lamur's shoulder. “But that's about all we know, we'll have to see how he responds.”
  • The Bengals had more runs than passes for the third time this preseason, according to the team's website. Cincinnati won all three times, finishing with 175.8 rushing yards per game. John Conner, who is battling Orson Charles for the starting fullback job, was impressive as the lead blocker. "Obviously, we are two different kinds of players," Conner said. "He has done a great job of coming over from tight end. He is more of an H-back kind of guy, and I am more of a side fullback. It kind of goes by what this offense needs and what we need at the moment. I hope I did everything that I could to make this team.”

that's really good news if it did pop right back in vs. them having to set it. that wasn't the impression i got watching it happen, so if that was the case it likely better than my worst fears.

Had the same thing happen once skiing.  Thing popped right back in and didn't hurt....for about 2 minutes.  30 minutes later I was doing shots of Jack left handed.  Took about a month before I could move my arm and not feel pain.  Big problem was I couldn't lift any weights for a good 2 months because I would just wake up in the middle of the night with the shoulder throbbing like hell.  Luckily I didn't tear anything but Jesus that hurt and Vicodin didn't do shit.

Five things we know about the Bengals in the preseason:

1. DALTON'S READY: Much of their focus is on developing a diversified passing game around their third-year quarterback. He completed 66 percent of his passes in the preseason, using every available receiver. He wanted to finish the preseason sharp and did so, completing his only pass for 18 yards to Mohamed Sanu while leading a touchdown drive on Thursday night.

2. JOHNSON CAN SCOOT: One of their few significant decisions at the end of camp involves the backup quarterback spot. Josh Johnson and John Skelton opened camp competing for Bruce Gradkowski's spot. Both struggled at the outset. Johnson missed some open, short passes. Skelton, who had never run a West Coast offense, was slower to pick it up. Johnson made the biggest impact with his ability to scramble. He ran twice on Thursday for 38 yards during a touchdown drive. Overall, he ran 12 times for 143 yards.

"It's an advantage that I have that I can bring to the game," Johnson said. "I just wanted to be able to show these coaches and this organization everything I can do on the field."

3. EIFERT CAUGHT ON FAST: Tight end Tyler Eifert, their first-round pick from Notre Dame, caught just about everything thrown his way during training camp. A wrist injury limited him at the end. But his ability to run routes and use his 6-foot-5, 250-pound frame to his advantage made an impression. Look for Dalton to find him often.

4. GIO HAS BIG THINGS AHEAD: Second-round pick Giovani Bernard is technically the second-string running back behind BenJarvus Green-Ellis, but he's going to be on the field a lot. His ability to catch a short pass and make defenders miss brings a new element to an offense that's been overly dependent upon A.J. Green the last two seasons.

5. ONE PLAY CAN CHANGE A LOT: When Green bruised his left knee during the first day of training camp, practice stopped and everything looked like their worst nightmare had happened. As it turned out, Green was able to return for the third preseason game and looked fine. Although the Bengals have their deepest roster during coach Marvin Lewis' 11 seasons, Green is the one player who can take the offense to a different level.
