CINCINNATI — The Bengals plan to address the trenches in rounds two and three of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Their need for offensive line help is clear and they could add a Cincinnati native with one of their two draft selections on Friday night.

The Bengals have serious interest in Clemson tackle Jackson Carman according to multiple league sources.

The team is doing their due diligence on the Cincinnati native and could consider taking him in the second round. The Bengals have the No. 38 pick, but they've traded down in the second round multiple times in the past.

Carman attended Fairfield High School, which is about 30 minutes from downtown Cincinnati. He was a two-year starter at Clemson.

They could be targeting him in the third round, but one source believes he'll go earlier than expected.

At 6-foot-4, 317 pounds, he has the size NFL teams look for in a starting offensive guard. He was a tackle at Clemson, but most scouts expect him to kick inside once he gets to the pros.

Picking him at 38 may seem like it's a bit early, especially with linemen like Dillon Radunz, Teven Jenkins and Liam Eichenberg on the board, but multiple sources confirm that the Bengals will consider taking him at pick 38.

Carman was college teammates with Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins for two seasons.

Is he at the top of their draft board? Is he even the top offensive lineman on their board? Those are two questions only the Bengals' front office and coaching staff can answer.

Carman has worked with former Bengals offensive line coach Paul Alexander in recent weeks.

Rapien hit that nail dead. Except we got extra picks in addition so I'm willing to watch and see.

All my opinions on OL picks are boosted by new, proven OL coaching.

Hot Take Tuesday: Jackson Carman will be Drafted Much Higher than Anyone Thinks

Despite injury issues, Jackson Carman has the potential to be a higher draft pick than many expect.
JACK BOROWSKY

The NFL draft is driven by a select few positions every year. One of those is offensive tackle. The supply of high-quality tackles has never met the demand. There are three tackles at the top of the draft this year: Penei Sewell, Christian Darrisaw and Rashawn Slater.

All three will most likely go off the board in the first 20 picks. There are many teams in the back half of the first round and some looking to trade back into the first round that want one of the premier tackles. After the top three, there is a large group that could hear their name called in the first 50 picks. One of those is Clemson's Jackson Carman, who is a top-32 talent and should be selected earlier than people expect.

The media and fans of the draft are always looking to find the next sleeper player that not many people know much about. That often leads to some of the most consistent names being overlooked at this point in the process. Carman is a perfect example of that. He was a five-star recruit from Ohio who even in limited action as a freshman, easily showed that he was different. He rarely gave up pressures and wasn’t fazed by the jump in level.

His 2020 tape was no different. Carman was even better in the run game and continued to show that he could play left tackle at the next level. Power rushers had zero success against Carman, as his core strength and overall size makes it difficult to move him. Carman has good enough bend, helping him against speed rushers. His foot quickness isn’t phenomenal, but he consistently gets the job done. People fall for guys who look pretty in pass protection, but few get the job done better than Carman, which is the most important part

Players like Jalen Mayfield, Liam Eichenberg, Dillon Radunz and Alex Leatherwood are all talked about in the same tier as him, but Carman’s tape is a lot better than all of them. He checks the experience box, has the versatility to play guard or tackle and still has room to grow, which will be scary for NFL defensive ends. He recently had back surgery, but he’ll be good to go for his personal Pro Day on April 15. The media is sleeping on Carman. Once he shows he is healthy, Carman will start moving up draft boards. How high does he move up? As noted, Carman is a top-32 talent, and it wouldn’t be shocking to see him go in the back half of the first round or early in the second. He is that talented and will be a difference-maker early in his career.

Clemson rarity: Jackson Carman high-round draft pick from offensive line

Todd Shanesy
Greenville News
April 29, 2021

Jackson Carman has a chance to be Clemson’s highest-drafted offensive lineman in more than 40 years.

Carman, who turned pro after his junior season, is expected to be a second-round pick in the NFL draft, which begins 8 p.m. Thursday (ABC, ESPN, NFL Network) with the first round. If he is indeed taken in Friday night’s second round, it will be one for the Clemson football history books.

Joe Bostic of the Tigers was overall pick No. 64, a third-rounder, to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1979. Only two other Clemson offensive linemen went higher than that. Dave Thompson was No. 30, first pick of the second round, to the Detroit Lions in 1971. Harold Olson was pick No. 13, also first pick in the second round, in 1960 by the Cardinals, who had just moved from Chicago. That was a decade before the NFL/AFL merger, when there were only a dozen teams. Olson instead chose to play for the AFL’s Buffalo Bills, making all-league status in 1961 and 1962.

Clemson offensive tackle Jackson Carman in the Sugar Bowl national semifinals game against Ohio State.

That’s high company if Carman were to join those high picks.

“I’m ready,” he said, “not only physically but mentally and maturity-wise. This is a great opportunity for me. It’s a challenge I’ve been dreaming of literally since I was a little kid. The opportunity I have now to go chase my dreams is something that I’m excited about and ready for.”

Carman, a left tackle from Fairfield, Ohio, started all 27 games for the Tigers during the past two seasons, making second-team All-America honors from CBS Sports in 2020. Still recovering from back surgery on a herniated disc, he did not take part in Clemson’s Pro Day on March 11 but had his own workout for about 20 NFL teams on April 15. He measured 6-foot-5 and 322 pounds, down from 345 pounds last fall.

Back problems, endorsement from Ketchup Whisperer..

Is this guy gonna get arrested for some dumb shit before camp and complete the trifecta? :ninja:

(Not that down on the pick overall but this all does start to sound uncomfortably familiar)
