Multitudinous on-field rules—none of which can be consistently enforced, and in-season by-law changes for “equity” (to name just a few), can be done towards yielding desired financial results. Unprovable? From the court of public opinion, absolutely. But it’s not axiomatically “crazy” either. Like I said, I’m just going to enjoy the ride. I'm sure that has included shady, underhanded shit that we'll never know about in professional football. Very possible a lot of money has been won and lost in our beloved sport with the finger on the scale. Human beings also evolve and get better at risk/reward analysis and checks and balances. I don't believe anything even close to outright fixing exists any longer. This business makes an unimaginable fortune regardless of who wins. If the Texans had taken it all the way, sales of all things NFL would go through the roof in Houston. Pretty chancy to cast shade on a cash cow of this magnitude. In other words, not worth it. Officiating is always the element criticized and suspected most. Especially late in games. It's really hard to prove an official is NOT biased for whatever reason, of course. Luckily for me big, important games, with big money on the line are decided by long field goals and spectacular fingertip catches that cannot be fixed all the time.
