Whitworth on how the Bengals handle contracts

The team kept doubling down on Ogbuehi and Fisher while Whitworth continued to play at a high level. It was a classic case of sunk cost fallacy.

Then they dropped from 12th to 21st in the 2018 draft in return for Cordy Glenn, where they chose Billy Price.

Whitworth was just the start of an avalanche of disasters on the OL.

I think an important thing to look at is that The Bengals were supposedly looking at their best chance to go to the Super Bowl this year, and we have 65 Million in cap space next year. We still have $10M this year that could have been spent on not getting second tier FA's. The Bills, Ravens, and Chiefs all just made midseason trades... Spending next year's draft capital for today's success. Troy and Katie would sooner eat a turd.

If we're not resigning both Tee and Chase, who are we saving it for? $65M? Who else are we worried about signing?

Face it... We root for a team that is always a little bit less invested than the competition. The fish rots from the head down. We have coaches who don't feel the heat. We have players who aren't learning to be pro's playing for a glorified AA team. We have owners who's goal is to be "competitive". This is all Mike and Katie do, and they will never feel the burning rage Jerry Jones feels after a loss. The Brown family is worse than just cheap or poor... They don't want it enough. In one of the most competitive sports leagues in the world. And that is reflected in our coaching, our roster, and our performance on the field.

The Bengals go out and play every Sunday with one hand tied behind their backs, and unless Katie is kicked in the head by a horse, always will. We fans root for the perpetual longshot. We're always working with 90% of what the other guy has. The fact that they're cold and impersonal is just a cherry on top. That's just the way it is. Everything else is the normal ebb and flow of the NFL balancing itself with high draft picks for crappy teams and a salary cap that forces them to spend a minimum. They even get a good FA or two on accident every so often.

I dont see the big deal here.

We thought we had Whits replacement. Whit was old. It proved to be a bad move. But those are made all the time.

Foundation players for your franchise should be dealt with honestly and openly.  For the Brown family to treat Whitworth like that is just bad business, and they lost his services because of it.  I guess it shouldn't surprise me that three of the Bengals best four players are unhappy with their contracts.  At least in the past you could walk in and have a man to man with Mike Brown.  Doesn't sound like Katie and Troy are having any of that.  Third generation nepo baby squeezing every last dime out of the team.  I had hopes things were changing, but maybe they are getting worse?

And what has changed?  Mike Brown is less involved.  Katie and Troy have 3 of their 4 best players unhappy with their contracts.  Here I was hoping Katie and Troy would run a more modern organization, and from what Whitworth described and what we hear from other Bengals top players it's as bad, or worse, than ever.

I am depressed.

Honest question, but why would Troy Blackburn be involved with this team at all?

He is Katie's husband. Ok.

But what other qualifications does he have to serve in his role? LinkedIn says he has a bachelors degree in Economics from Duke. Ok. Is that it? To be Vice President of a multi-billionaire dollar company.

What if him and Katie divorced. Would he still stay a part of the front office?

It seems odd for Mike Brown to hand over so much power to a son-in-law.

And I am quoting Katie... "We watch a lot of football. I don't think people realize how much football we watch."

In a few generations every available job down to the parking lot attendants will be family, and what then?

Mike Florio says the Bengals run their organization like a family-owned food truck, can't say he is wrong.

IDK, if a food truck sucks they will fail very quickly.  At least around me, that's a very competitive market these days.

The other food trucks sure as shit aren't going to all get together to kick down & keep you afloat if you're struggling.  :D

I think of it more like a trust fund that came with the stipulation that they have to field a reasonable facsimile of an NFL football team.

Well consider they are the only food truck in a 100 mile radius and 1 of 32 in the country that gets subsidized by the more successful food trucks in bigger markets....

So... More like an inbred feudal family from one of the counties where they still marry sheep. They may have chins you could launch an F-16 off of and be as smart as bag of door knobs, but they were born into Austrian nobility. Hell, it makes sense that their trusted advisor is "Duke" Tobin. "Elizabeth" Blackburn...

everyone has players unhappy with their contracts. its like bengals fans live in a tunnel with a cone on their heads crying in a vacuum like the rest of the nfl doesnt exist.

Adams just forced his way out of vegas, Crosby said if he goes i go, its a package deal

the jets had reddick sitting out for 7 fucking weeks, after he was traded for demanding more money from philly. aaron rodgers demanded a trade out of green bay, amari cooper asked to get out of cleveland after not getting the contract he asked for in the offseason.

i can do this all night. there are 30 more.

yall just sit in a corner and never look outside at the world moving around? everyone wants more money,.

Jamarr chase agent comes to the bengals, asks for early extension, then asks for MORE MONEY THAT JEFFERSON, bengals offer him jeffersons money, he refuses, and bengals are the bad guy?

the absolute worst fanbase in sports history.

Go ahead, ignore the main point of my post and just concentrate on unhappy players.  Sure, there are going to be issues like this, but right now the Bengals have three.  All of them are handling it better than the Adams, Rodgers, and the other jack asses in the league, but it shouldn't ALWAYS be that way.  If you listened to Whitworth's comments and think that's OK, I sure don't want you running any kind of business with my money.  Apologist.
