And it continues…

Now Trump, along with his buddies Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, wants to amend or eliminate the 1974 budget law that gives control of the purse strings to Congress so he can exert more control over spending.

But no, he doesn’t want to be a dictator. He’s already tried to undercut Senate confirmation laws, and now he’s trying to undercut the House’s power to spend. 😡🤬

Jesus indeed.  Glory be to God that these 2 billionaires will have unfettered access to the nation's budget.  Truly the will of the Lord at work, Amen.

If God in his eternal wisdom decides to give us polio, or smallpox, or yea, verily, an infected papercut, who are we to go against his divine will? Amen.

And it continues. I wasn’t aware of this, but I guess you can’t have too many sexual predators in the administration.

Also, why weren’t any of the charges against Matt Gaetz adjudicated at the local level, i.e where the incident occurred??

What, you mean like some broke nobody?

These are just allegations.  You know how the FBI and entire Federal law enforcement apparatus loves to go on baseless witch hunts.

Good read

Yes it was.  It would be easy to conclude people are more trans/homophobic than racist but the way the question was worded doesn't necessarily support that re: "too much emphasis" (on that issue.) Have to wonder if Buttigieg as the VP candidate instead of Walz would've mattered one way or the other.  Delaware then elected the first openly1 transgender woman to Congress, to further confuse the issue.

On that note, then there's Arizona.. They talk about swing states and while 11 electoral votes weren't going to matter anyway, I know a lot of people here in AZ that went 3rd party or sat it out entirely.  Most of them are Chicano, indigenous, or mixed2.  Most of them would say due to the Palestinian genocide, with Harris's record of supporting for-profit prisons & the police state in general a close 2nd - which I'd venture to guess played a big part in other BIPOC avoiding her.  Think we talked about that in the "Democrats" thread before she was even officially named as the Dem candidate.

An abortion rights bill passed by around a 20% margin here, but so did another that doubles down on the "papers please" codified racial profiling of our SB1070, by roughly the same margin3. Trump won the state by around 6%.  I would love to know how many people voted on those two bills but left the top slot blank & skipped out on presidential candidates.

It seems crazy that people would overwhelmingly vote for abortion rights and still choose Trump (by a far slimmer margin, but still.)

This line jumped out at me:

Quote

people have been loathe to abandon the prevailing narratives, facts be damned (emphasis added)

No question this is the bigger issue, & not just in who is to blame for this election.  The prevailing opinions about the economy and immigration are both so far from the reality yet these are 2 of the biggest issues people are basing their votes on.  Record stock market gains, record employment, gas prices going down, deportations up since any time other than during the COVID lockdown4..  Which was also the excuse for huge price increases on food & other basic necessities, which we blame on "inflation".

Trump is such a media spectacle that he's able to control the narrative with outright lies, and people are voting based on those lies.  That's terrifying.  Safe to say the establishment Dems are dead in the water & I don't see anyone right now in the party that can save them.  Bernie will be pushing 90 by the next election (assuming we're still going to have those).

It all sounds pretty fucking hopeless, doesn't it?  Kind of like let's hope we can fashion a life raft from the wreckage after Trump & his minions fly this thing straight into the ocean.  Not buying the notion going around that we can all tread water for another 4 years and get back to some form of competent government.  These fuckers are bent on causing as much damage as possible, which I guess some people are going to cheer on like they're exempt from the carnage, sputtering about "sticking it to the libs" while they choke on their own shit.

1.  Think it's important to emphasize "openly" as there have always been closeted gay (if not trans) people in Congress.  Interesting to me how the "confirmed bachelor" sort of prevarications were so much more acceptable in the past.  Did people really believe these folks had lifelong "roommates" that accompanied them everywhere or was this a more polite way of avoiding the issue?

2. The idea of Mexican ancestry being kind of misleading in that "Mexican" is a nationality & some long term Mexican-Americans were only briefly "Mexican", like in California which was Mexico for less than 30 years. The racial identity we call Mexican is some combination of Spanish & indigenous, or even straight up indigenous but Spanish-speaking (Yaqui for example), with a lot of people starting to reject that Spanish part in favor of the native & even truly Chicano/Mexican-American culture/identity.

3. Prop 314 looks like it contains a sort of "poison pill" where it only goes into effect if a similar bill elsewhere survives a challenge in Federal court, at least from what I can gather.  So, in effect, the expanded police powers that people thought they were voting for would actually be curtailed unless and until such a court case happens.  At least, if I've understood the thing correctly. The language of this ballot measure was not even particularly convoluted compared to some others. If I can't figure out WTF they're trying to do within several re-reads and a pair of voter's guides I am definitely voting "no" on that shit.  There was also an addendum to charge people for deaths resulting from fentanyl specifically, which is fucking stupid IMO since people overdose on all kinds of things they choose to ingest, like IDK Big Macs or hard seltzer & hard drugs are already plenty illegal and fentanyl notoriously dangerous, yet people still use them, which seems to me the part we need to focus on instead.  You all heard of this "tusi" shit people are buying?  Pink mystery powder that boy band dude fell off a balcony using.  There's not even an accepted drug it's supposed to be, people call it "pink cocaine" which on testing seems to be the one drug that it doesn't contain. It's just straight up random drug cocktail and people use that shit anyway.  That market moves far too quickly for these ham-fisted drug specific prohibition measures.

4. I see the pandemic as the breaking point for a lot of people, when we decided to reject science and basic facts for our own convenience. The misinformation about the vaccine in particular has snowballed into a complete disregard for medical knowledge and education with Anthony Fauci still under Secret Service protection, which of course is likely to be removed with this new administration seemingly intent on displaying his head on a pike for the high crime of telling people how a virus works instead of recommending they inject bleach or stick sunlamps up their asses.  Closed borders or no, another deadlier pandemic is a certainty & here we were refusing to wear a fucking mask.  I recently learned of Joe Martin, a captive silent-movie era orangutan "actor".  He was reportedly able to wear a mask during the "Spanish Flu" pandemic of 1918.  An orangutan.  But that's too much to ask of us.

And now the Cheeto's son's girlfriend/former Fox News personality, Kimberly Guilfoyle,  is the Ambassador to Greece.

At least he decided against Kari Lake as Ambassador to Mexico.
