The 12 and 8 came from Weston.

Hill is completing a 3 year contract signed after he had 8 sacks in the final year of his rookie deal. He hasn't come close to that since. So he's not really in line for a raise even though the cap has gone up. Getting older and less productive translates to lower pay.

Ossai isn't a full time starter like the other guys you compare him to. He was the backup to Hubbard this season and the team would like Murphy to take over that role. Maybe he'll be in demand in free agency but his career says "buyer beware".

Tee's change of agent seems like an obvious sign along with Khinkabwalla's (sp?) report on him wanting to stay, along with Burrow's remarks. Last year he said he would have taken the Pittman deal, 3/70. His price will be higher now as the market has risen but it's very doable if the team is so inclined.

To put it another way, the team has to spend the money somewhere and I think they will be better able to spend it on Tee than on convincing outside free agents to come here.

Truth in all that..

Trey Smith - OG Chiefs - Super Bowl rings, very durable, has excelled as a pass protector. Smith could really hold up the middle for Burrow so that Joe could climb up the pocket the way he loves to do (but usually cannot do because the heart of the pocket has already collapsed).

I would love Trey, I do think he will be priced out of our market and is a RG which tends to be easier to fill

The way Cincinnati area native and Bengals fan Joe Thuney was priced out of our market? I know the Bengals don't consider OG to be a premium position, but Burrow's shredded knee and Aaron Donald in the Super Bowl beg to differ.

I know Trey Smith has always played at right guard, but that's only because the Chiefs already had Thuney at LG.  Of course now Thuney has been moved to LT and is still playing well. Oh, what could have been...

Bengals cap space updated outlook going into offseason

Story by Chris Roling

The Cincinnati Bengals approach a key offseason with plenty of cap space to make big moves like potentially re-sign Tee Higgins and pursue outside free agents.

It helps that the Bengals allotted $5.9 million in carryover money, with the NFL confirming the values for all teams this week, per Over the Cap.

That means the Bengals currently sit at roughly $58.7 million in free cap space to work with this offseason before any cap-saving measures like cuts, extensions and restructures.

Since the Bengals have whiffed on names like Jermaine Burton and others, the Bengals will be able to put this cash to use on things like extensions and outside signings as they remain in win-now mode despite the disappointing end to the season.

Beyond these 3 Raiders have Spillane, Deablo, Epps, Hobbs, Holmes and Moehrig. None of those stood out to me so far, but interesting to note that their DC, who we interviewed for the spot here, would be able to potentially fill his D with known commodities on a pretty affordable level, mostly rotational guys and not stars

There is a narrative I heard that it's going to be Higgins or Gesicki, I'm not sure that's true but it could be.

When it comes to Higgins I don't logically see how you can pay him and I will be ecstatic if they do.

The Bengals enter the offseason with arguably the top free agent on the market, a collection of core pieces from conference championship teams and a few individual winners of the otherwise disappointing 2024 season.

The Bengals have 19 unrestricted, two restricted and four exclusive-rights free agents to decide on in the coming months.

They also have a long list of realistic cut candidates that could clear anywhere from $30 million to $50 million more off the 2025 cap.

Tee Higgins will steal all the headlines, deservedly so, but consequential parts will be up for debate across the roster.

Here’s a look at the Bengals’ free-agent class of 2025 and primary cut candidates with analysis and what I’ve gathered on whether they’ll return or sign elsewhere.

For more on Higgins, you can read last week’s story on the state of his situation.

B.J. Hill became a regular on the Bengals defense after being acquired from the Giants. (Ian Johnson / Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

Defensive big names

B.J. Hill

• Position: Defensive tackle
• Age (start of camp): 30
• Career cash: $35.2 million
• Last deal: Three years/$30 million
• Status: Unrestricted free agent
• 2024 snap percentage: 62 percent
• PFF rank: 23rd of 88 interior defenders

Key stat: Hill ranked second on the team in pressures, but his overall efficiency rushing the passer was below the league average. Among qualifying interior defenders, he ranked in the bottom half of the league in win rate, productivity and true pass set win rate. The pass rush production was stable over his career in Cincinnati, though, and his run defense remained above average. He largely continued to be the same player he has been across the board.

67.2

Where it stands: Two aspects of a return to Cincinnati work against Hill. First is his age. The Bengals have consistently turned away from players once they turn 30, especially on defense. Second, 2024 second-round pick Kris Jenkins was drafted to take over his role and there will certainly be more resources thrown at fixing the defensive line this offseason, likely with multiple draft picks. Reinvesting into a piece of the old line (solid as he has been) with a new coordinator goes against trends. That said, there’s love for what Hill could bring and his market will be interesting. For the right price, it’s possible, but if there’s any market for his services, don’t expect the Bengals to go there.

Percent chance of return: 33 percent

Joseph Ossai

• Position: Edge rusher
• Age: 25
• Career cash: $4.9 million
• Last deal: Rookie contract
• 2024 snap percentage: 51 percent
• PFF grade: 68th out of 86

Key stat: On the surface, Ossai appeared to create more disruption as the season unfolded and he fully took over the edge rusher spot opposite Trey Hendrickson, beating out first-round pick Myles Murphy in the process. The underlying stats don’t tell the same story. The second half of the season, Ossai ranked 49th out of 66 qualifying edge defenders in pass-rush win rate. He was able to creep into the top half in productivity but he wasn’t a consistently quick winner. Ossai largely won with effort and pursuit.

Where it stands: Ossai fits the profile you could see stick around. He always seemed to be in Lou Anarumo’s doghouse until this season. He’s shown flashes, but not until fully unleashed this year did you see consistent production. He’s still young and could serve as an interesting rotational edge with a chance to grow into more. That sounds like something the Bengals would be interested in, but players with his profile (25 years old, 5 sacks) tend to draw attention in free agency. I don’t see the Bengals spending big to keep Ossai, but it’s in play. Does Ossai prefer a change of scenery? Potentially. His agent (David Mulugheta) might as well.

Percent chance of return: 45 percent

Mike Hilton has 283 tackles and six interceptions in his four seasons with the Bengals. (Dylan Buell / Getty Images)

Mike Hilton

• Position: Slot corner
• Age: 31
• 2024 snap percentage: 65 percent
• Career cash: $28.7 million
• Last deal: Four years/$24 million
• PFF grade: 14th out of 127

Key stat: No NFL corner was better against the run and attacking the line of scrimmage this year than Hilton. Pro Football Focus graded him first (91.7) against the run, recording 38 stops (solo tackle for an offensive failure), good for second among CBs. He also had the lowest missed tackle rate (7.5 percent) among those with at least 20 total stops.

Where it stands: Hilton proved he could still play and the staff was keenly aware of the reminder he sent down the stretch. Somebody will be interested in that production. He can’t cover like he used to — as is the case for most 30-somethings at corner. That was apparent as Anarumo took Hilton off the field on third downs this year, much to the veteran’s dismay. On a defense that had an overwhelming lack of playmaking last year, Hilton was one of the few who consistently did. Are they going to throw that away? They might. If the plan is to clear the deck for the young corners to grow, that probably requires moving on from the veteran. There will be split voices in the room on this one considering all Hilton has meant to the organization. I still think it lands with somebody else willing to pay more than the Bengals.

Percent chance of return: 25 percent

Vonn Bell

• Position: Safety
• Age: 30
• 2024 snap percentage: 62.2 percent
• Career cash: $36.6 million
• Last deal: One year/$1.21 million
• PFF grade: 65th out of 105

Key stat: Bell played 65 snaps per game over the season’s first eight games. In the second half, Anarumo pulled back the rotations of his veteran safety in favor of Jordan Battle and reduced him to subpackages. Bell played an average of 21 snaps per game.

Where it stands: The experiment to bring knowledge of Anarumo’s system back to the Bengals backfired for both Bell and Anarumo. Age showing up in his game was the reason Cincinnati let Bell walk to Carolina in 2023 and that didn’t get any better when he returned in 2024. In retrospect, this was a move that never should have happened. It won’t happen again with Anarumo gone.

Percent chance of return: 1 percent

Akeem Davis-Gaither

• Position: Linebacker
• Age: 27
• 2024 snap percentage: 47 percent
• Career cash: $7.1 million
• Last deal: One year/$2.7 million
• PFF grade: 64th out of 92

Key stat: Davis-Gaither, in conjunction with Germaine Pratt, combined to struggle to limit yards after the catch once they paired up together midseason. Davis-Gaither took over when Logan Wilson went out for the season with his injury. By the end of the year, Davis-Gaither played 80 fewer snaps in coverage than Wilson but gave up 93 more yards after the catch.

Where it stands: This marked the first year Davis-Gaither received significant playing time and it will go down as a missed opportunity as he hits free agency. An impressive showing could have landed a substantial free-agent deal. I just don’t see that now and the Bengals likely will move on with a new coordinator searching for his own impact players at linebacker.

Percent chance of return: 15 percent

Mike Gesicki had 65 catches for 665 yards in his first season with the Bengals. (Sam Greene / Imagn Images)

Offensive big names

Mike Gesicki

• Position: Tight end
• Age: 29
• Career cash: $25.6 million
• Last deal: One year/$2.5 million
• 2024 snap percentage: 46 percent
• PFF grade: 14th out of 45

Key stat: Gesicki attached the line less than any “tight end” in the league. He landed at 8.4 percent of snaps inline. The second-lowest rate was the Ravens’ Mark Andrews at 19.6 percent. Gesicki lined up in the slot 68 percent and out wide 23.1 percent. Considering him a tight end is a misnomer. In fact, he evolved into the Tee Higgins replacement. No player outside of Ja’Marr Chase produced more in the passing game when Higgins was off the field.

Where it stands: Gesicki pointed out he missed out on some larger contracts in recent years as production dipped his final year in Miami and he had essentially a lost year in New England. As with all Bengals tight ends after a year with Joe Burrow, the time has come to cash in. He can join C.J. Uzomah, Hayden Hurst and even Tanner Hudson in that club. If the Bengals can’t re-sign Higgins, keeping Gesicki would be critical considering the above numbers. If they do and the market responds to Gesicki’s playmaking, he could be the latest tight end to bolt.

Percent chance of return: 60 percent

Cody Ford

• Position: Offensive line
• Age: 28
• 2024 snap percentage: 61 percent
• Career cash: $10.8 million
• Last deal: One year/$1.4 million
• PFF grade: 143 out of 148 offensive linemen

Key stat: Ford took at least 80 snaps in three of the five offensive line positions — 431 snaps at left tackle, 152 at left guard and another 80 at right tackle. He added 25 snaps as the sixth OL/TE. The problem is when he was asked to pass block, it didn’t always go well. He finished 139 out of 139 among qualifying offensive linemen in pass-blocking efficiency in true pass sets.

Where it stands: The Bengals staff really liked what they saw from Ford. They kept giving him more opportunities and felt he hung in there at all three spots. They would like to see him enter 2025 in a competition for one of the guard spots, where he never really got to settle in. He’s likely a versatile sixth offensive lineman coming off the bench, but there’s a real appreciation for the type of player Ford has been while in Cincinnati. I think he hangs around.

Percent chance of return: 90 percent

Others on defense

Cam Sample

• Position: Defensive lineman
• Age: 25

Stat: Sample played between 33 and 43 percent of the defensive snaps each of his first three seasons.

Where it stands: Sample suffered a torn Achilles in training camp last year. It would be easy to see Cincinnati as a safe landing spot on a veteran minimum contract as he rehabs.

Chance of return: 75 percent.

Marco Wilson

• Position: Cornerback
• Age: 26

Stat: Wilson played 36 snaps after being acquired midseason and only allowed two receptions for six yards, according to PFF.

Where it stands: I could see Wilson sticking around to compete in training camp. He’s won’t be viewed as a solution, but he’s still young with experience so it wouldn’t hurt to keep him around.

Chance of return: 45 percent

Jay Tufele

• Position: Defensive tackle
• Age: 26

Stat: Tufele played in 13 games this season, logging 242 snaps. He made just six tackles while missing three.

Where it stands: There will be plenty of new blood on the defensive line, I doubt Tufele will stick around to be part of the next generation.

Chance of return: 20 percent

Joe Bachie

• Position: Linebacker
• Age: 27

Stat: Bachie has played in 49 games over four years in his Bengals’ career, but he’s only played 60 defensive snaps over the last three years. He has the second most special teams snaps of any player since the start of 2021.

Where it stands: It would make sense for Bachie to return. The Bengals could use linebacker depth and special teams continuity amidst the changes.

Chance of return: 80 percent

Others on offense

Trent Brown

• Position: Offensive tackle
• Age: 32

Stat: He has started 96 games in his NFL career, adding three last season before suffering a torn patellar tendon injury that ended his season.

Where it stands: The Bengals listed Brown at 6-8, 380 pounds when he arrived for training camp last year. Any return would largely depend on how he looks upon recovery from the injury. There’s a chance that was a career-ender.

Chance of return: 20 percent

Tanner Hudson

• Position: Tight end
• Age: 30

Stat: Hudson caught 19 of his 23 targets and had the highest success rate (65.3 percent) of any season of his career, including his breakout in 2023.

Where it stands: Hudson’s 2024 was solid for the role he was playing behind Mike Gesicki, but it will be most remembered for the two plays he didn’t make: Fumbling at the goal line against the Patriots and failing to hang onto the two-point conversion in Baltimore. Still, he’s a target Burrow trusts and has established rapport.

Chance of return: 60 percent

Khalil Herbert

• Position: Running back
• Age: 27

Stat: Carried 20 times for 69 yards in the season finale against the Stealers, his only real work after being acquired midseason.

Where it stands: The staff likes his approach and work ethic, but they’ll likely look to add new pieces behind Chase Brown.

Chance of return: 25 percent

Trayveon Williams

• Position: Running back
• Age: 27

Stat: Four players remain from the first game of Zac Taylor’s coaching tenure in Cincinnati: Sam Hubbard, Germaine Pratt, Drew Sample and Williams.

Where it stands: It’s incredible to play running back for six years in one place and only manage 62 career carries. Good for Williams, who has compiled $5.3 million in earnings.

Chance of return: 10 percent

Chris Evans

• Position: Running back
• Age: 27

Stat: Evans in three seasons has accounted for as many rushes as receptions: 19.

Where it stands: Evans tore his patellar tendon in August and needs to prove his health before latching on with another team. It’s doubtful it will be in Cincinnati as they rebuild the back of the running back room.

Chance of return: 10 percent

D’Ante Smith

• Position: Offensive tackle
• Age: 27

Stat: The fourth-round pick in 2021 will have just 56 offensive snaps to his name as he hits free agency.

Where it stands: Smith suffered a patellar tendon injury in training camp and also will need to prove his health before signing anywhere. Doubt it ends up being in Cincinnati.

Chance of return: 15 percent.

Logan Woodside

• Position: Quarterback
• Age: 30

Stat: Woodside was signed to the 53-man roster for two games in December, adding two NFL game checks instead of practice squad pay.

Where it stands: Woodside would be welcome to stick around behind Jake Browning and Burrow.

Chance of return: 75 percent

Restricted free agents

Cal Adomitis

• Position: Long snapper
• Age: 27

Stat: Adomitis had zero unplayable snaps this past season.

Where it stands: The Bengals are happy with Adomitis as the long-snapper and he should be back.

Chance of return: 95 percent

Cade York

• Position: Kicker
• Age: 24

Stat: York is now 11 for 15 (73 percent) in his career.

Where it stands: There likely will be competition for Evan McPherson in training camp, but it won’t be York. That’s been clear since the moment his game-winner doinked off the upright against Denver.

Chance of return: 10 percent

Exclusive-rights free agents

P Ryan Rehkow, DE Isaiah Thomas, TE Cam Grandy, OL Jaxson Kirkland

Where it stands: Look for all four players to return with the Bengals extending the exclusive rights offer to keep them around.

There is a narrative I heard that it's going to be Higgins or Gesicki, I'm not sure that's true but it could be.

When it comes to Higgins I don't logically see how you can pay him and I will be ecstatic if they do.

Er, why couldn't they pay Higgins? They have plenty of cap space and other teams would be eager to pay him 25-28 mil per year. If Myles Garrett or Maxx Crosby was available, they would be better options for that money (and more), but they aren't. Bengals can afford to pay Tee and extend Ja'Marr and Trey. Then extend Gesicki and upgrade both guard positions. Then draft defense.

What do the Notes in your spreadsheet mean for someone like Kinlaw?

Saints done.

Not a ton there. I am not a huge believer that we would pay up for Chase Young but here is him

I think Higgins on the open market makes over 30 maybe 35. The Market is what it is. I don't think you should invest so much in your WR corps, especially for a player who is injured often. I think the prudent thing to do would be a Franchise and trade.

Kinlaw Notes are where he played most. Outside, Over Tackle, B Gap or A gap.
