Halfway through Sarah Palin's speech tonight at the RNC, people following the speech noticed she was deviating from the prepared text.

According to sources close to the McCain campaign, the teleprompter continued scrolling during applause breaks. As a result, half way through the speech, the speech had scrolled significantly from where Governor Palin was in the speech. The malfunction also occurred during Rudy Giuliani's speech, explaining his significant deviations from his speech.

Unfazed, Governor Palin continued, from memory, to deliver her speech without the teleprompter cued to the appropriate point in her speech.

Contrast this to Barack Obama who, when last his teleprompter malfunctioned, was left stuttering before a crowd unable to advance his speech until the problem was resolved.

Sarah Palin. Winner.

She was a lot more impressive than I expected, and I especially liked this part, "I was mayor of my hometown. And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involved. I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a community organizer, except that you have actual responsibilities. I might add that, in small towns, we don't quite know what to make of a candidate who lavishes praise on working people when they're listening and then talks about how bitterly they cling to their religion and guns when those people aren't listening."

I'm surprised none of the extremists here have found some way to bash the speech yet. Other than the ignorant beauty queen speech remarks.
She gave a fine speech written by a Bush speech writer, with some fact in it that were not completely accurate and some that were misleading, but the choice is still pandering. But she isnt even the problem, *cough* the grahams *cough*
All politicians have their speeches written. The ability to add a part of yourself to a written speech is more impressive. I am very curious to see how she does when the time for extemporaneous speaking comes.

Maybe Obama has written a speech for himself before, but he does have a team of writers.

Jamie... I just pulled up 3 different stories all saying that McCain has distanced himself from Graham and isn't taking any input from him. I don't know what your definition of "helping" is but it typically means in the present and actively doing it now. Everything I see disputes that.

I'll take your word for it, although I see about 4 different sources stating that John Favreau writes Kerry's speeches. Potentially, where the dispute lies is in I see a couple sources referencing that Kerry wrote his 2004 DNC speech. But as far as I can tell that is all.

Either way - it is a mute point. Means very little to me. I care about debates, not canned speeches.

Only distanced himself after he called us a nation of whiners, shame because McCain had been hinting at him for treasure sec. good job ending your chances on that one phil.

That's probabally what I had heard. Faverau huh? Swingers is my all time favorite movie, he should have snuck in Kerry talking about "pancakes in the age of enlightment"

The debates are going to be interesting thats for sure.

There was nothing wrong with her teleprompter. There was nothing wrong with rudi's teleprompter. Once again, another area of misinformation being put out by the republicans. (or as my daddy would have said, another damn lie!)

Not that it matters one ioda... but the only source stating that there wasn't an actual issue is a guy by the name of Jonathan Martin...

MSNBC has reported and is still confirming that the teleprompter did have issues.

Again, it really doesn't matter whether their speeches were from memory or not. We do know that the teleprompter did break on one of Obama's speeches because he had to stop mid-speech.

But whatever. We're arguing petty and stupid shit now. We're not even sticking to the actual topics of this campaign anymore.

I can't wait for November 8th.

Politics is SO DIFFERENT now than it ever was! I mean, you got Dems fighting, Pubs fighting, everyone jockeying for position....who knew?

Jesus Fucking Christ I hate politics.

The Giants beat the Redsksins in the NFL season opener. Anyone care about that?

Odd how every speaker at the convention, and lots of people here, criticize Obama as being nothing but a slick talker, and for being such a poor talker...

Broken Teleprompter Fable Never Happened ....
The teleprompter did not break

Sarah Palin delivered a powerful speech last night, but she did not "wing it."

Which is what Erick Erickson, citing sources close to McCain, has written on his blog, RedState.

Erickson writes that "the teleprompter continued scrolling during applause breaks. As a result, half way through the speech, the speech had scrolled significantly from where Gov. Palin was in the speech."

This claim has been picked up on Drudge and could quickly enter into the insta-mythmaking about a speech that need not be embroidered.

Perhaps there were moments where it scrolled slightly past her exact point in the speech. But I was sitting in the press section next to the stage, within easy eyeshot of the teleprompter. I frequently looked up at the machine, and there was no serious malfunction. A top convention planner confirms this morning that there were no major problems.

Erickson writes that the same malfunction happened during Rudy Giuliani's speech earlier in the night. Again, I watched the teleprompter during this speech, and it worked without problem. Giuliani, as is his wont, simply decided to go off-script and add some new lines, such as one attacking Obama for his "bitter" comments.

These extemporaneous comments, many of which drew huge applause, made the former New York mayor's speech run much longer than planned. So much so that a convention planner confirms that they had to scrap a planned video ahead of Palin's speech.

That would be the Jonathan Martin article I'm referring to...

Who to believe... His version or MSNBC still stating that there were issues.

Again, who cares? If it did or didn't, this crap is irrelevant.
