Notes: Bengals get an extension

By C. Trent Rosecrans, CNATI.com Posted October 15, 2009 12:14 PM ET
The Bengals have received a 24-hour extension from the NFL in an attempt to avoid a blackout of local TV for Sunday's game against the Texans.

The Bengals received an extension for the first game of the season and sold out its allotment of tickets thanks to a combined effort from the club, Kroger and WKRC Channel 12.

"We thank our fans for stepping up with a good run of support the last few days, bringing us close enough to get this extension," Bengals executive vice president Katie Blackburn said in a statement released byt he team. "We are continuing to work to lift the blackout. It's unclear if we will make it -- we have more than 3,000 tickets to go -- but we have great fans and hope we can reach the level that allows our sellout streak to continue."

The Bengals are still facing their first local blackout of a Bengals game since Nov. 9, 2003, also against the Texans. Last week Arizona needed the help of an extension to sell out their game against the Texans and ultimately sold enough tickets to have the game shown locally.

Fans in Tampa and San Diego are also facing potential blackouts, according to several media reports. So far this season, only four games have been blacked out -- two in Jacksonville (against the Cardinals and Titans), one in Detroit (against Washington) and one in Oakland (against the Broncos).

According to Weather.com, Sunday's game is scheduled to be played at 51 degrees and sunny skies.

COATS ACCEPTS BLAME -- Tight end Daniel Coats had two potential touchdown passes bounce off his hands Sunday, and fullback Jeremi Johnson lost another. Coach Marvin Lewis said "maybe one" of the passes to Coats was dropped, but otherwise he insisted there was no problem will dropped passes.

Coats politely disagreed.

"I don't want to go against the head coach," he said with a laugh. "I should have made those plays. They're plays I can make."

The first pass came late in the second quarter, and Coats was partially screened by a defender. The second was a potential game-winning touchdown in the final minute. Coats was open down field, but the ball arrived just as he was breaking toward the middle of the field, and he got only one hand on it.

"The first one kind of snuck up on me. I should have caught it, plain and simple," he said. "But the second one ... it was my fault. I didn't attack it like I should have. I ran the route kind of lazy, now that I've gone back and looked at it. With the way the game was, the timing of the game, I should have made the play. Not to go against what Marvin's saying, but I consider them drops."

Coats struggled with fumbles earlier this season, and the two drops Sunday were not his first of the season.

"Those are things that are expected of us," he said. "There are certain things I kind of lose focus on. I think I got in the mindset of just being a blocker, and I kind of forgot about being a pass receiver, and I need to get back into that mindset. If I can be an asset there, I need to be an asset. I have to, I guess, find a good balance."

ALMOST A TEXAN -- NFL rushing leader Cedric Benson said he was very close to joining the Houston Texans this off-season before signing a two-year deal with the Bengals.

"It was pretty close, it came down to a last-minute decision," Benson said. "We were going back-and-forth with the Bengals and (Houston). I think we were looking more on the Bengals side and they pulled out in the last minute."

Benson said his familiarity with the Bengals was a big reason he decided to stay.

"There were a lot of pluses coming back here, I had a year under my belt and knew the guys and had a good (grasp) of the playbook and knew I could get off to a fast start," Benson said.

Like the rest of the Bengals, Benson is garnering more attention now that he's atop the leader board, like his team.

"It's busy, everyone wants to talk to you -- whether it's media, family, fans, whatever, but that's not a bad thing, it's a good thing," Benson said. "I definitely wouldn't want it the other way. I plan to keep it rolling."

A writer from Sports Illustrated is here this week, as is a writer from AOL's Fanhouse and ESPN the Magazine.

Benson leads the NFL with 487 rushing yards through five games. The Vikings' Adrian Peterson is second with 481 yards. Many have expressed surprise at where he is on the leaderboard, but Benson said he's not surprised.

"I've always seen myself making large strides in this profession and being at the top of the charts," Benson said. "But it's still only week 5 and I have a long season to go. I don't plan on being a one-week wonder."

Benson also leads the NFL with 111 carries.

"I feel great," Benson said. "The more carries, the better I feel. I'm having fun with it and wouldn't want it any other way."

PERSPECTIVE -- Before the Bengals buy into too much of the hype, coach Marvin Lewis told his players to understand just where things stand after five games.

"Marvin told us we're just four plays from being 0-5," Benson said. "I thought that was a neat comment, it really hits home."

JEANTY FINE -- Linebacker Rashad Jeanty said he'll be fine to play this weekend after missing Sunday's game against Baltimore.

Jeanty suffered a dislocation of the right ring finger in Oct. 4's game at Cleveland. Jeanty said the bone broke through his skin -- he was surprised at just how white the bone was -- and was taken to a Cleveland hospital for an immediate surgery to replace the finger and clean the wound.

Jeanty said for a week, he was told he couldn't sweat, or risk infection. However, the week of conditioning wasn't a detriment and he's been able to practice this week.

PRACTICE REPORT -- Wide receiver Jerome Simpson was back at practice on Thursday after missing practice due to illness. Running back Brian Leonard (groin) and defensive end Frostee Rucker (ankle) were dressed and went through stretching, but didn't work out with the team at the beginning of practice.

Rucker wore a boot on Wednesday, but was in regular gym shoes on Thursday.

CELEBRATION PRACTICE -- Practice makes perfect, or so they say, and Chad Ochocinco was practicing his touchdown celebration in Thursday's practice.

After catching a pass in the back of the end zone, Ochocinco continued to run and lept into the arms of a CNATI reporter. It'd really be something if he made a TD catch on Sunday, ran into the tunnel, up the elevator and into the press box to celebrate with me.
I never have actually seen a bone go through skin. Always thought it would be neat to look at. I know sounds crazy.

Google "compound fracture". Have a barf bag handy.

I have seen that happen to a high school friend of mine. He was jumping a small metal fence with just socks on and got caught on the fence and came down slamming his forearm into the ground. The bone broke completely through and the bottom piece came about an inch out of the skin. Most shocking thing you will ever see. He now has a metal plate in that arm about 6-8 inches long and a scar all the way from wrist to elbow.

He basically bought (donated) 1,000 tickets to lift the blackout against the Broncos.

The club donates 1,000 tickets to military and charities

God, I didn't know Jeanty went to a Cleveland hospital. I hope the poor bastard doesn't get a staph infection!
