Bengals, 'Pacman' working on multiyear contract; signing imminent

Adam "Pacman" Jones' signing with the Cincinnati Bengals is imminent, according to a league source.

The Bengals and Jones' representative, Ray Savage, had several conversations during the cornerback's visit with the team Tuesday, a league source said, and have the nucleus of a multiyear deal in place.

The sides expect to put the contract to paper this week, and Jones is set to join the team's offseason program Monday. Savage wouldn't comment on the status of talks with the Bengals, but he did confirm that he was in negotiations with the team.

According to the source, Jones was in much better shape than he was early in the offseason, during his initial visit with the team, and he had an impressive workout Tuesday.

The Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers also had expressed interest in Jones, whose career in Tennessee and Dallas was derailed by numerous off-the-field incidents. Jones, who didn't play last season, has been reinstated into the NFL and stayed out of trouble for a considerable period of time.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that former Miami Dolphins safety Gibril Wilson also was also in Cincinnati on Tuesday to work out for the Bengals. Wilson has played for the New York Giants and Oakland Raiders, too.

0 risk, potential high reward. nothing to dislike about it.
What potential for high reward is there? He isn't going to start over Hall or Joseph, he won't return punts or kickoffs because he isn't better than what we have. I'm not sure he's even good enough to be a backup DB over what we've got unless we're converting him to safety and getting rid of Nelson.

I hate this move. We have enough so-called "problem children" already, and Pacman is the douchiest of the bunch.

Good move by the team...
He'll come cheap and if he fucks up or cant cut it then they cut his ass...similar to Matt Jones

What he brings to the table is a dangerous return guy....

The signing would seem to indicate that Ghee will be looked at as a CB/FS now and how could that be bad..

Jeremy Miles and Ghee are players Im hoping will play well enough to forget about any lack at FS in the future...

What reward? I dont know, maybe that a former top 6 draft pick could be better then Morgan trent and a rookie 3rd round project?

I can't really defend the move, but someone thinks their is potential for high reward if they're looking at a multi-year deal.

Really makes me wonder about re-signing Joseph before the season ends. Or Hall the following season.

For the people that are saying they don't like the move.

"But he was very disciplined today. That was impressive. He did everything the way we asked him to do it and he looked good doing it," Zimmer said. "It was kind of a promise. We told him back in February if he did what he was supposed to do and got in shape, we'd look at him again in April. We're a few days late but he looked good. You can tell he's been working. He weighed 12 to 15 more pounds than the last time and he looked fast."

But his off-field problems have cost him two full seasons, '07 and '09. Jones, the sixth pick in the '05 draft, has only played nine games since 2006 and, as Zimmer says, "As a football player, we don't know what we've got. But if we hit it, it's a home run."

Zimmer has made it quite clear.

"We've got a bunch of strong character guys on defense," Zimmer said. "I'm not going to let this kid screw up our chemistry. I don't think he will. He looked me in the eye and shook my hand and said, 'Coach, I just want to play.' He seems very humble. He seems to understand."

Zimmer > You.

Seriously, we added depth and competiion to CB and the Kicking game.

The dude has had off the field issues, but he hasn't been in trouble at all in a long time.

Hell, the Stealers Kicker has been arrested twice in the past year. Where is all the media
and outcry for them employing such a "thug"?

I embrace our redeeming, bad boy image. Win and all the asshats will be swinging
for the Bengals nuts talking about what geniuses they are.

I'm all for taking risks on guys who have turned the corner. I've seen no indication that Pacman has done so.

I may have to rethink my position.

But even when he was supposedly good, he wasn't really all that good. He was a better returner than a CB, and even then he wasn't like the second coming of Hester or anything.

I just wonder how many guys with issues we can take on without it biting us in the ass at some point.

My nightmare scenario is that he plays well enough to earn a 3rd CB spot on the roster, Hall or Joseph goes down with a serious injury, Pacman is now the starter, then gets into serious trouble and then Ghee or Trent is suddenly our starter.

Don't laugh...given our recent injury history with them occurring in bunches to the same position group, it isn't impossible.

I think you're unintentionally trying to get me to support this signing. Because I got news for you - If Pacman doesn't sign here, and Hall or Joseph goes down, we're already in the exact same scenario.

So, what do we lose by adding Jones into the mix, exactly?

In his first 30 games, he had 18 pass defenses and 4 INTs.
He returned an INT for a TD.

In that same span, he also averaged over 26 yards on Kick returns
and averaged over 10 yards per punt return with 4 returns for TDs
out of 65 returns.

What I posted in the Wilson thread....
Our potential backup defense (if all 11 starters got hurt on defense)

DE-Michael Johnson
DT-Sims
DT-Atkins
DE-Carlos Dunlap

LB-Brandon Johnson
LB-Muckleroy
LB-Jeanty

CB-Pacman Jones
S-Gibril Wilson
S-Ndukwe
CB-Brandon Ghee

Those would be our backups...that might be a better lineup then our starting defense for many years in the last 15.
How can you not like that?

I would have passed on Pacman. High risk of getting back in trouble once he gets more money. We're not that thin at CB.
But Mike Brown never pays anyone real money. I read that on the Internet. So we are cool.
