Reds' Ryan Madson out for 2012

Updated: March 24, 2012, 2:35 PM ETAssociated Press

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Cincinnati Reds closer Ryan Madson has a torn ligament in his pitching elbow and will miss the season.
Madson returned to Cincinnati and was examined by team medical director Dr. Timothy Kremchek. The Reds said Saturday that Kremchek told general manager Walt Jocketty the ligament was torn from the bone of Madson's right elbow.
Madson agreed in January to a one-year contract guaranteeing $8.5 million, after a $44 million, four-year deal to stay with Philadelphia collapsed in November.
Jocketty says: "We talked to the team. We all have to stay positive. We have alternatives internally that we will sort through in the next few days."
Awesome!

So does this mean Chapman goes back to maybe being the closer?

This sucks.

But I saw an article that mentioned that Chapman goes back to bullpen duty while Marshall becomes the closer.

35 million is a lot for a reliever, but I guess it's now or never for us.

So fucking lame.

If you guys recall, Madson had a deal with the Phillies a few weeks before he signed with us, Im curious if the phils saw something and backed out because of it.

If so, we should find a way to get the money back. Whoever does the physicals should be fired too, unless he did it after he signed, but there was probably something going on before...

Marshall to closer, Chapman to pen.

I think id rather have Chapman as the closer...Marshall is more flexible.

althought if Marshall has a successful season as a closer it makes that extension he signed pretty good.

I think I read on ESPN Kremcheck told Jocketty that bleeding indicated the injury was recent

I have no reason to suspect Kremcheck is a liar, but wouldnt he be the one in charge of doing the physical? If so, hed have about 8.5 million reasons why to lie about the injury being after we signed him.

Somebody screwed up somewhere. Either the person doing the physical completely missed it or the coaches/trainers in Arizona screwed up. You should never blow out your elbow from doing bullpen sessions.

I would have no problem with Chapman being the closer. Someone can enlighten me as to why you wouldn't want Chapman as the closer in the first place? Wouldn't that be a position you wouldn't have to worry about for the next 8-10 years? I'm sure the Reds have their reasons and I'm sure some of you guys are up to date on it. I could see him putting up Mariano Rivera type numbers.

From everything I have read, Baker wants him as the closer, BUT upper management doesn't think it is wise for them to pay starter money to a guy only to use his talents as a closer.

Do you agree with upper management Lew?

I think I would side with Dusty on this one. I remember the days when it was Myers, Franco, etc. that gave you a confidence that they were going to nail it down. Although Cordero had some good years, he scared the hell out of me. He was a problem solver. And if there was no problem, a lot of times he would create one.

I haven't been able to watch Chapman pitch extended innings so I can't make an imformed decision. If I watched him throw for 6-7 innings on a consistant basis and keep his control in toe and keep his velocity semi high, I would keep him as a starter. Baker loves the feel Chapman brings to the game when he comes in for relief and how the crowd gets jacked up.

Looks like Chapman is going to be a setup man and Marshall is the closer.

Aroldis Chapman moved to bullpen

Updated: April 2, 2012, 9:29 PM ETESPN.com news services

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Left-hander Aroldis Chapman is headed back to the Cincinnati Reds' injury-depleted bullpen after spending spring training getting ready to be a starter.
Chapman, entering his third season with Cincinnati, had hoped to get back into a starting role after spending most of the last two seasons pitching in relief. Manager Dusty Baker said injuries forced the change in plans on Monday.
"That was a very, very tough decision because Chapman could be one of our best starters or best relievers," Baker said. "It is a situation where with the injuries that we have, starting out early in the season when the starters are lucky to go five or six innings, we had to shore up our bullpen."

Closer Ryan Madson is out for the season after tearing a ligament in his elbow. Setup man Nick Masset will start the season on the 15-day disabled list with an inflamed pitching shoulder. Left-hander Bill Bray missed most of spring training with a strained groin and is still getting sharp.
The rotation is set, so Chapman would have opened the season in Triple-A if he was a starter. The Reds decided to keep him in the majors as a reliever for now.
"This early in the year, the bullpen does a third to half the work," Baker said. "It only takes one dude to have one bad inning. One dude can have a bad inning and ruin hours of work."
Baker also announced Monday that Sean Marshall will open the year as the Reds' closer in place of Madson.
"Sean Marshall's our closer for now," Baker said of the lefty, who went 1-0 with a 3.27 ERA in 11 innings over 10 Cactus League outings.
"He's closed a few games, not a lot," Baker said. "He can throw that breaking ball for strikes anytime he gets ready and that's hard to do in Arizona with this light air and all. He's not fazed by situations. He's been around awhile. He's a veteran guy and has had success."
The Reds signed Chapman to a six-year, $30.25 million deal before the 2010 season, expecting him to develop into a hard-throwing starter. With their rotation set, they moved him into a relief role midway through that season, then called him up in August. He went 2-2 with a 2.03 ERA in 15 relief appearances as the Reds won the NL Central.
Chapman struggled with his control last season and spent time in the minors. He was 4-1 with a 3.60 ERA in 54 appearances for Cincinnati overall.
The Reds expected him to open this season in Triple-A as a starter. He made five appearances as a starter in spring training, going five innings in each of his last two outings. He knew there was a chance he could end up in the bullpen.
"Chapman is going to be a starter," Baker said. "He is going to be a very good starter. He's a smart kid. He actually anticipated it. When we lost Madson and Masset and Billy Bray is not sharp yet, through the process of elimination, he figured that stuff out."
The Reds will carry 11 pitchers until Saturday or Sunday. They open the season on Thursday against Miami, then have a day off, allowing them to carry one less pitcher and one more position player through the first weekend.
Also Monday, the Reds optioned shortstop Paul Janish to Triple-A Louisville, leaving 25 players in camp.
