There are a lot of good ideas in the EU that a lot of fans love. It's a good idea to at least look through it and see what's worth using.

There's also a ton of bullshit in the EU that needs to just go away.

well my point is, you can look through and use things and make it canon in movie or tv form, without actually having to make the source material considered canon.

There's what, hundreds of books that have been written?

IMO, they would choose X concept to be canon without making the entire source material canon. Maybe they choose to include Mara Jade and Grand Admiral Thrawn in the new movies, but wouldn't acknowledge the story that goes along with them in the novels.

Sources tell Variety that while no deal is done yet, the “Girls” actor is close to signing on to play the villain in J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: Episode VII.” Exact details are unknown, but the character is said to be in the vein of iconic “Star Wars” villain Darth Vader.

Driver, 30, is the first cast member to be revealed for Walt Disney Studios and LucasFilm’s highly-anticipated “Star Wars” installment, which will open in theaters on Dec. 18, 2015.

The big-budget tentpole, directed by J.J. Abrams, is scheduled to shoot at London’s Pinewood Studios in April. Additional cast members will likely be announced in the next month.

A new Star Wars film is getting closer by the day, and Lucasfilm and Disney have just announced some new information on the status of the production. Episode VII — co-written and directed by J.J. Abrams — is set to begin shooting this May at Pinewood Studios in London. For the first time, however, the team is giving an indication of what fans can expect to see when the film hits theaters in 2015. According to today's release, it will take place 30 years after Return of the Jedi, which capped off the original Star Wars trilogy, and "will star a trio of new young leads along with some very familiar faces."

The latter reference is no doubt a nod to what has been rumored for months: that Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill could return to the franchise to reprise their roles as Han Solo, Leia Organa, and Luke Skywalker. Jedi came out in 1983, just over 30 years ago, which would bring the ages of the older actors and their characters right into alignment. As for that new trio of leads, casting rumors have been running rampant, with Adam Driver (Girls) recently named as a likely candidate to play the villain. None of the casting information has been confirmed just yet, but with May the 4th — unofficially known as "Star Wars day" — and San Diego Comic-Con coming up, we wouldn't be surprised to see some very big announcements made before the end of summer.

‘Star Wars Episode VII’ Has Begun Shooting, Casting Nearly Complete, Says Disney’s Alan Horn

While Disney chairman Alan Horn remained mostly tight lipped during an interview at the Loyola Marymount School of Film and Television in Los Angeles, he did let it slip that “Star Wars Episode VII” has already begun shooting and has much of its cast.

“We have a lot of them, it’s not completely done yet,” Horn responded when asked about casting, noting it as the most difficult part of putting the highly anticipated film together.

As J.J. Abrams prefers to keep details under wraps for most of his films, Horn declined to reveal any names. Variety, however, learned in February that “Girls” actor Adam Driver is in talks to play the villain. Actors being considered for the lead role include Ed Speleers, John Boyega, Jesse Plemons, Matthew James Thomas and Ray Fisher.

“We’re actually shooting some of it now,” Horn said, despite previous comments that filming would start next month. The chairman could have been referring to getting B-roll and location shots without having the cast on set, but he didn’t divulge any information beyond that.

The script, co-written by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams after an early draft by “Toy Story 3″ scribe Michael Arndt, was also a challenge, according to Horn. On all other details, though, Horn channeled his inner Yoda to advise those awaiting more news: “Patience, you must have.”

“Star Wars: Episode VII” is produced by Abrams, his Bad Robot partner Bryan Burk and Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy. It’s set to hit theaters Dec. 18, 2015.

a couple weeks ago a Disney exec said that, staying true to the original Star Wars, outside of the returning cast (Luke, Leia, Han, R2, C3PO and maybe Lando), they are casting all relatively unknown actors and actresses in the other key roles.  Like the first Star Wars, they don't want you to be in the movie going "hey, it's that one guy from that such and such show".

That said, they won't be COMPLETE unknowns, but not mass audience known. The closest thing to an official cast member that's been "announced" is a guy who has a big role on the HBO show Girls.  Jessie Plemons from Friday Night Lights and Breaking Bad has also been up for a lead role.

So it sounds like, at least for the first movie, it will be unknowns.  And then if guys like Gary Oldman and Benedict Cumberbatch who have met about roles end up getting cast, it will likely be in episodes 8,9, etc... which are not expected to involve Luke, Leia, etc...

Lucasfilm is ending the expanded universe, apparently in favor of putting out stuff in the future that will be canon with the movies. From what it looks like is that they will be bringing in the EU into the canon stuff and ending the idea that it's EU, but that doesnt mean that the EU past stories will necessarily be used in the films, it might but might not.

As J.J. Abrams and company get underway shooting Star Wars: Episode VII, they’re still adding pieces to the cast. One of those pieces could be you.

To enter, visit the Star Wars: Force For Change initiative.

The auction will raise money to support UNICEF’s Innovation Labs, which aims to create technological fixes for children in remote or troubled regions. (Some of their work involves creating portable, solar-powered education kits in places like China, Uganda, and Burundi, mobile phone programs in the Philippines aimed at reuniting children with their families after an emergency, and delivering infant medical information from clinics in Zambia.)

The walk-on roll won’t be a budget-buster, available for auction only to the highest bidder: You could land the part for as little as 10 bucks. For each $10 contribution, donors will be automatically entered — and the contest runs from now until midnight on July 18th.
