Bengals start re-signing some guys (Peerman, Miles, Rey, Hawkins, Huber, Harris, Nugent, Gillberry, Geathers, Maualuga, Jones, Roland, Tate, Quinn)

Recommended Posts

I also posted this in another thread, but I saw this on NFL.Com... Supposedly they made an offer to Mike Mitchell of the Raiders. He's 25. See link below... About 1/2 way down the page. He fits them from a FA perspective... Young guy, has started a handful of games. Kinda like Bobbie Williams was. He has physical, ability, but not a lot of starting experience. I'm sure Hue knew him.

"If he doesn't get injured" - and there is the answer.

What the Bengals should be doing is drafting for quality depth to come in and spell for Sanu and have a similar impact if he does get injured again.

So that means getting a similar guy like a Chris Harper or a Ryan Swope in rounds 3-4.

The only way we take a WR in round 1 (say) is if he's the bpa.

I am not familiar with Sanu's college career.  Does he have an injury history?  (Obviously he didn't his last year with over 100 catches).

Only going off memory, I do not remember him having a injury history.

I was referring to last season when Sanu got injured.  Our offense went completely down the pan without him.  If he were to get injured again, where would that leave us....same old stagnant offense.  That's why I suggested we draft for depth at his position with a similar guy who can come in and have a similar impact in a pinch, just in case.  There's no harm in over compensating depth and giving Dalton the extra weapons on the field he needs to win, AT ANY GIVEN TIME.

good find. Isn't he the safety from Ohio U that Al Davis fell in love with because of his combine? A surprise 2nd round pick if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, same guy. Had the draft experts "scrambling" when he was picked. Mayock had him as a UDFA type, but then he watched some tape and did the "my bad" thing and said he had a lot of ability.

I don't disagree with any of that. In fact, I think we will draft a WR in the third or fourth rds. S, LB, RB in the first three unless an incredible BPA is left, then find some gems at other positions. Just like Sanu, MJ, and Atkins.

IF this guy signs, do you think this eliminates the Bengals from drafting a Safety ?

Panthers bring in Mitchell, Ginn: Oakland free agent safety Mike Mitchell said he has offers from Cincinnati and Carolina, and hopes to make a decision by the end of the week. Mitchell, who has started nine games since the Raiders drafted him in the second round in 2009, said the Bengals and Panthers both said he could compete for a starting spot. Mitchell, who grew up 15 minutes from Cincinnati in northern Kentucky, visited the Panthers on Monday.

The Panthers also hosted receiver/return specialist Ted Ginn Jr., who also is considering the Bengals. Ginn, Miami’s first-round pick in 2007, has six career returns for touchdowns.

Leeway is important.  Does not tie us down to a single position of importance in the draft (at least in regards to Safety).

I also don't think the team is above replacing Mays, or even Miles if they offer more than he does on special teams.

Nelson is the only lock to make the team.  Miles probably a 80% lock, but only offers you anything as a special teamer.

Mays, Iloka and Dye shouldn't feel safe.

I'm not opposed to drafting a WR if he's BPA.  But I also think you need to develop the guys you do have.  AJ green spoiled us.  Rookie WRs making a splash is the exception, not the rule, and I expect a lot of growth from Marvin Jones this year.

yea while I'd love to get a Hopkins or Woods at 37, I think their focus is going to be upgrading Tate and Whalen with a guy who can also challenge Jones for the #2 outside spot. So probably not a guy with the first 3 picks.

The one guy I would take early is Patterson if he somehow lasts until 21.  But I really don't think he will.  The draft season has been really good to him.

I dunno about that, he's been getting slammed for poor route running and bombing combine interviews. He's apparently not very football smart.

Just saw this on twitter regarding Woods....

I think he was a 2nd-4th round guy prior to this so who knows where this takes him. IMO, we don't want to draft someone who can't contribute this year, even if it is good "value" in the 4th or 5th round....

Matt Miller@nfldraftscout24m

NFL scout tell me USC Robert Woods may need to sit out a year due to an ankle injury. "Could play now, but better to wait until 100%."

Well if we like him, that's the kind of thing 7th round comp picks are good for.

Prior to the draft evaluation process he was considered a second round pick and at best the #2 guy.  Now, most have him #1 and a teens pick.

I guess we won't really know until April 25.

I think the jury is still out.  I've heard early teens, I've heard late 1/early 2.  Many seemed to have soured on him post-combine.

I think this falls in line with Cosell's tweet yesterday.

Been grinding thru tape. I believe this will be tough draft to mock. One team's 15th best player could easily be another's 35th best.

For some reason, because of size, intelligence, an actual draft pick, and cover capability, I think they're still pretty high on him.  Or maybe it's just me that's really pulling for him to get his chance.

I keep forgetting about Dye.  He was getting hyped as one of the top safeties in the country a year or two before his senior season.  And then, what really surprised me, was that we had him playing CB here.  I wouldn't sleep on him as a guy that could come in and produce.  Not that I wouldn't like to have a 2nd round, immediate starter type come in, mind you.

Patterson is raw, but he's such a dynamic open field runner, and at his size, I think he will be very enticing for a team with a creative OC who could get the ball in his hands a number of ways.
