I like Barnwell and his columns are great, but he always strikes me as rather uninformed about the Bengals. Every time he mentions them in a column, it's not in depth at all (i.e. Cincy needs a DE in the first round since they let Johnson walk!) The Bengals just don't have as many holes as these other teams. Interior o-line is probably their biggest weakness and they're addressing it with Pollak. They also have 4 or 5 big defensive contributors returning from IR.

Most reporters don't follow these teams anywhere near as much as we do.  Thank god for Cole Harvey, finally a guy that actually cares about knowing about the team he reports on.

The Steelers and Bengals seem to be doing the same thing. I guess the Browns are showing the proper urgency by replacing younger players with overpriced veterans-the surefire road to success for a last place team. I cannot see how the Ravens have gotten better. The bottom line is that every year people whine or criticize the Bengals for essentially sitting out the first week of free agency. For their lack of effort they have gotten better each of the last 3 seasons. After three days of free agency, the Bengals still have the best roster in the division and it isn't really close.

Grantland is also cherry picking.  Getting Revis is cool and all, but they lost or might well lose Talib, Spikes, Willfolk. Edelman, and Blount.

that's why I don't get caught up in the first few days of free agency.

You got Revis.  He's great, but you still have crap at your other 4 corner spots.

I'd rather have 3 B- players for what it would cost 1 A+++ player.

Breaking down Vincent Rey's contract

March, 18, 2014
By Coley Harvey | ESPN.com

Linebacker Vincent Rey will get $1 million guaranteed in 2014, the first year of a two-year deal he agreed to with the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday.

If he ends up making the full amount of his contract, he will end up receiving a nice annual bump in pay from what he had previously been making as an undrafted backup and special teams star. After receiving a career-high $630,000 in 2013, Rey will earn $1 million in base salary in 2014 and $2 million in base salary in 2015. With bonuses factored in, he holds an overall cap value of $2.1 million in each of the two seasons.

Rey was re-signed about a week and a half after receiving a low-round tender from the Bengals. He was one of three Bengals' restricted free agents to receive the tender that equaled $1.43 million. Receivers Andrew Hawkins and Dane Sanzenbacher also received the tenders. Hawkins currently holds a four-year, $13.6 million offer sheet from the Cleveland Browns that the Bengals have until 11:59 p.m. ET Tuesday to match. If they don't match it, Hawkins will leave for Cleveland, and the Bengals will be left empty-handed. Because each of the low-round tenders were undrafted free agents, the Bengals won't receive draft compensation if any of them signs with another team.

While he still was mostly a backup in 2013, Rey ended up having the best season of his career.

He set career-highs in tackles (47), sacks (4) and interceptions (2). Against the Ravens in Week 10, he became the only player in Bengals history to record three sacks and an interception in the same game. It is expected that he might start training camp behind Vontaze Burfict at the "Will" outside linebacker position, but he also could play at the middle, or "Mike," position after adequately relieving Rey Maualuga for three games there last season.

Here's a look at the breakdown of Rey's new Bengals contract (specifics come from ESPN's Stats & Information):

2014
Cap value: $2,100,000
Cash value: $2,100,000
Signing bonus: $0
Roster bonus: $1,000,000
Workout bonus: $100,000
Base salary: $1,000,000
Guaranteed money: $1,000,000

2015
Cap value: $2,100,000
Cash value: $2,100,000
Signing bonus: $0
Roster bonus: $0
Workout bonus: $100,000
Base salary: $2,000,000

I dont think we actually picked up the option, just that we are likely to. Unless I misread something...

We are going to pick it up without a doubt, unless AJ is extended before May 5th-ish, which is the deadline to exercise it. I would bet money that every top-10 pick from 2011 except Locker and Gabbert are getting that option if they aren't extended first.

Dolphins cornerback RJ Stanford just signed a contract with the Bengals. Deal features some guaranteed money. Stanford is a key STeamer.

I just realized we lost 4 starters from last years playoff team this offseason.

Cook-Harrison-Johnson-Collins.

Kind of, since I assume you mean starters form that playoff GAME.

But Harrison's snap counts were ridiculously low until Geno and others got hurt even though he was the starter, and Collins wasn;t the starter for the majority of the year.  So it's really two impact starters and I assume they think they can replace Cook and Harrison pretty easily otherwise we would have just kept them.

correct.  The final tally for Harrison I read the other day was 35% of the defensive snaps, and that was even after the increased role when Geno went down.

Here is the Roster with all of the restricted FA's that we can have back next year if we want them. Its projected that we will have about 62 Million in cap space next year. Minus 10 Million for picking up Green's option and lets say 3-4 Million for Peko and we can match anyone's offer.

If we look solely at projected losses and starters the pending major holes seem to be at

QB
LT/LG
K

We could lose just our starting QB, LG, MLB and K.

Kicker will certainly work itself out.
At MLB there we will likely see them dabble with Rey and Burfict there just to see if there is an upgrade and then re-sign Maualaga otherwise. These positions should be fine.

The Big Question marks are QB and LG (LT do to Whit's age).

And both the Offensive and Defensive Coordinators

but we re-signed Marvin.  lt2.jpg

(you know what's coming...)

I see the switch in d coordinators basically a wash and Hue being an upgrade.

Harrison and Cook are easily replaceable.   Collins was a backup but a good one.  MJ was the real loss but I think he is replaceable as well.
