"The Dark Knight"

I saw it on Wed. night at the Uptown with 830 people in Washington, DC.

Is the movie good, yes, is it great, nope. It is hard to compare Heath and Nicholson because it was completely different protrayals of the Joker character. Heath is more true to the comic, and Nicholson was comedic. Both have good one liners (Heath uses a line from "Jerry McGuire" of all things). I thought the plot somewhat jumped around in parts, and things could have been taken out to make the story work a little better. It is 2 1/2 hours.

I don't think Heath will get an Oscar nomination for this, but who knows with the Nov/Dec releases whether the competition may be weak.
Damn, I miss the Uptown theater <_<

I'm thinking I might catch this on Imax...
I could see this looking really good in IMAX and you could tell Christopher Nolan wanted IMAX with a lot of the overhead shots amongst other things.

There have been rumors for years that the Uptown is closing, but I hope that never happens. The sound is by the far the best in DC (Jamie B can back me up on this) and the screen is huge. That being said, some theaters in the DC area are converting some of their screens to IMAX.

The Uptown is BY FAR the best theater I've ever been to. I've seen some good flix there, too... Dances With Wolves has never been the same anywhere else.

I even drove up from C'ville to see the Matrix there. It was worth the 2 1/2 hour drive B)

it wasnt too long imo. and ya u dont even notice heath. its one of the best acting performances of all time.

saw it today and thought it was great. It's been 6 hours since I walked out, and I still can't quite sum it into words my head is that scrambled.

Overall, I'd give it a 9 out of 10, and that lack of a last point is mainly due to 1) Having to sit in the 2nd row, it was harder in the beginning to get immersed in the film and 2) As great as it was, it was tough to live up to the hype I had built up in my mind, though that's a knock on me not the movie.

Definitely the top comic movie of all time, and trust me Ledger deserves every bit of the hype he's gotten for his performance. Definitely oscar worthy, and he had many "holy shit, did he just say/do that?" moments. The role was simply perfectly written and perfectly acted. He truly was a villain with no boundaries and no fear. The film as a whole will likely get an oscar nod as well. I'd also put up Aaron Eckhart for a supporting actor nod. It was as much an artistic and thought provoking movie as it was an action movie. They really delved into morality, the role/responsability of a hero, and just how far should one go for the end to justify the means.

My only letdown, which wasn't even really a letdown, was that it wasn't as much a "mindfuck" as I expected. Reviews et al talk about the joker really fucking wth batman's head as far as right/wrong and as liam neeson said in the first film "being ready to do what is necessary" at any cost. It definately hits on those themes, but I would have liked to have seen it torment Bruce/Batman a little more than it did and go even deeper.

As for spoilery stuff:
interrogation/"bad cop" scene: definately best scene in the movie, wish it could have been longer

The pencil scene? classic! Same with the joker as the nurse.

While I'm disapointed that he's dead, I thought Two Face was excellently done, especially from a CGI/makeup standpoint. They really pulled off him having two different "faces" well. Two Face was also in a lot more of the film than I expected.

So is Lucius still on board since the sonar stuff is destroyed?

I knew Rachel died, but it didn't take anything away from the scene. Maggie was a definate upgrade over Katie Holmes, though the performance still didn't shine. I didn't think either performance was bad, its just tough to keep pace with all of the other outstanding performances in the cast.

I knew Scarecrow was in it, wish he had gotten a little more time. And on that note, Mike Engel (Anthony Michael Hall) had a far larger role than I expected, which isn't a bad thing.
Man, it was good to type all that out! Thinking more clearly now and I'm totally ready to go watch it again, this time in a better seat!

And for those who may be worried, don't worry about the 2 1/2 hour time, it flies by as the movie hooks you within the first minute and never really lets go. GO SEE IT NOW!
im 99.9% sure that Two Face isnt dead. Im pretty sure he lived. He fell the same distance that Batman fell and that suit wouldnt save him from the fall enough to walk away like that. Also it might be a mistake by eckhart but he was noticeably breathing on the ground. also it would make sense to have the funeral either way. they would put him in arkham (along with the joker) and claim he is dead in order to use his face as the hero. that would make perfect sense. then for the third film they could have The Riddler free Two Face from Arkham to get the 2 villians for # 3. They could even have the joker in the 3rd by having heaths laugh played as the Riddler walks by and frees Two Face and says something to the Joker and doesnt let him go.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Two-Face isn't dead either, as I was paying attention to his chest also both times that I've seen the movie now. I'll have to check that out again tomorrow when i see it again high as balls. haha.
Lemme just say...besides the Lion King, this is my favorite movie of all time. Heath Ledger's performance brought my favorite comic book villain to life in ways that Jack Nicholson's fat ass only wishes he could. Heath's performance was flawless. Honestly, when I look at a picture of him then watch his performance as the Joker, it's the first time I have ever really seen someone truly become someone entirely different on film. His walk- perfect. His voice- perfect. His actions- absolutely incredible. I can't imagine that anyone could ever put together a performance truly like this ever again. Seriously. I was sad when the movie was over because I knew that was all of this Joker I will ever get to see. If this man doesn't get an Oscar for his performance I will seriously fucking murder someone.
And the disappearing pencil trick was probably the best "intro" scene to a character that I've ever watched. That just opened the door to anyone who came into the movie expecting the Joker to be some silly, campy Tim Burton type nonsense. The only trick better than the disappearing pencil trick was the disappearing Rachel trick. That bitch was getting on my nerves. Was so happy when she got blown the fuck up mid-sentence.
So...yeah. I can't wait to see it again

EDIT:

Also, I am PUMPED for the Watchmen movie. I can't believe they're actually staying this close to the source material. When Doctor Manhattan fuckin blew that guy apart....it gave me goddamn chills. Looks to be a good couple of years for comic book movies....cant wait for that shit.

well i just got back from the movie and all that i can say is that when the theater says it starts at time x, your ass better be there. i thought id play it cool and stroll in there a few minutes late but no, that shit dont fly. thank god id seen the first 6 minutes already.

overall i thought it was the most well put together movie id seen in a long time and while it is definitely a movie id love to buy when it is released (this says alot in my world) i cant say that it lived up to the imaginary hype i created. anyways, 9 out of 10 and i would be happy finding myself back in the theater for another show.

this HAS to at least be a trilogy, although id imagine a 4 movie set would better round out the story

I read on another message board that people are comparing Joker to Hannibal Lecter. What do y'all think?

gary oldman (gordon) himself said it was better that Lecter, and the greatest movie villain performance ever. Its a tough comparison because you got to see Lecter for 3 films.

Personally, I give the nod to Ledger just because he had so many "holy shit did he just do that?" moments where with Lecter you kind of knew what you were getting (and that's not to be a knock on him at all). The Joker continued to shock you with what he said and did.

I"m really hoping that's how it works out, and I've read the arkham idea on another site and like it. Let's hope that's how it works out.
Holy crap, what a lovefest! :o

Glad I decided to wait off unitl I could have good seats instead of getting stuck in crappy seats like 1181. I've got seats reserved center of the screen for tomorrow night, and I'm looking forward to it.
if I could do it over, I would have waited but I had done movietickets.com and pre-ordered tickets + traffic is a bad combo.

A good "summary" that I saw on another site goes like this:

This isn't a superhero/comic movie. It's a crime movie (ala Heat or Casino) with characters based off a comic book. The Batman and other characters you see aren't "cartoonish" and are depicted in a way where they could realistically exist in today's world.

The local theater to me only offers reserved seating. I'd been looking to see the flick as early as last Wednesday, but all the good seats were pretty much already taken through the weekend by Wed night..

I'm as excited about this flick as any in recent years (thanks for the blacking out the spoilers, guys -_-). I've been watching Christian Bale movies left and right for the past week or so.

Hope I like the flick as much as you guys had.
another thing I would have liked to have seen is them have Mr. Reese (the guy who learns batman's identity) be a bigger name actor. That way, you could have Mr. Reese = "mysteries" = The Riddler. Then you can play up the "villain knows his true identity" plot along with "batman is a fugitive on the run" plot.
Absolutly Amazing.

The only way Ledger doesnt get at the very least an oscar nominiation is because Hollywood has a bias towards these kinds of movies, but this will go down as one of the all time great villons ever! His preformance was brilliant!

Its a shame we will never get to see this joker on the big screen again.

he's actually considered one of the best villains in batman, aside from Joker

which sucks because it can only go downhill from here.

no way they can top this with part 3

the riddler? I don't see a movie with him or anyone else coming close to this one
