This is what Zimmer had to say about safeties not long ago . . .

"Everybody in the NFL is looking for cover safeties," Zimmer said. "You're playing three and four receivers, and tight ends that can run. So what's wrong with playing three corners and a safety? We're not really a Cover 2 team, but a Cover 2 corner might fit for us as a free safety."

exactly what I was thinking. If Crocker should go down, I think you may see them just replace him with a corner. Hurts you a little in the run game, but pass D is still strong. Front 7 is strong enough to handle a not as good run D safety in a pinch.

LSU defensive end Rahim Alem to the Cincinnati Bengals

I didn't realize he is Chad Jones' brother . . .

Alem was hoping to join his brother - safety Chad Jones, who was a third-round pick by the New York Giants - as a draftee but feels he's still in a good situation.

"I was a little disappointed, but I always look at the bigger picture with things," Alem said. "At the end of the day the situation is good. I didn't get the money up front that I wanted. But I feel I have a good chance of making the 63-man roster. The depth chart suits me well, and they run a 4-3 defense, which is what I was looking for."

This WR si getting a tryout at the Rookie camp . . .

No former Aurora prep football players were taken over the weekend in the 2010 NFL Draft, but at least two have a chance to earn their way onto NFL rosters.

Smoky Hill High School graduate Augustine Agyei and Regis Jesuit High School alum Klint Kubiak each received invitations to rookie minicamps, getting chances from the Cincinnati Bengals and Washington Redskins, respectively.

Agyei, a 6-foot, 185-pound wide receiver, graduated from Smoky Hill in 2005 after winning a state championship in the hurdles, spent two years at Drake University and one at Western Washington before ending up at Colorado State-Pueblo for his senior season in 2009. He was an All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference pick for the Thunderwolves after he racked up the third-most all-purpose yards in a season (1,261) in school history.

After an impressive performance at a pro day at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Agyei earned a berth at Cincinnati’s three-day minicamp, where he has a chance to win a spot at the Bengals’ summer training camp. The team currently has nine wide receivers on the roster.

"I'm excited and grateful for the opportunity to pursue my dream," Agyei said in a statement. "I'm ready to get after it and prove what I can do."
Comcast Presents 2010 Scouting Report: Vincent Rey, LB, Duke

This post is brought to you by Comcast

In recent years, one of the Jaguars' biggest strength has been the team's special teams unit. They have been successful due to the accumulation of players in later rounds of the draft that have become special teams aces. Former Jaguar Chad Nkang and current Jaguars Montell Owens and William Middleton are just a few of examples of the parts that have made the special teams unit such a successful one.

In the late rounds of the draft and in undrafted free agency, look for the Jaguars to draft players that have the upside to become solid players at their position while also providing the insurance of being a solid special teamer in the case that their skills don't project to the next level well. Duke linebacker Vincent Rey is a perfect example of this type of player and could be one that the Jaguars attempt to bring into camp with a late round pick or through undrafted free agency.

That said, don't think that Rey is nothing more than a special teams player. In his 4 years at Duke, Rey was a three year starter and played in all but one game over the 4 years. His production cannot be ignored as he accumulated over 300 tackles in his final 3 years at the university.

At just under 6'1, Rey has relied on his athleticism and speed to make plays from sideline to sideline. Rey impressed scouts at his pro day by putting on a show that would've even raised eyebrows at the combine. His 4.54 40 time would've had him tied with Jamar Chaney for the fastest time at the combine if he had received an invite.

The question about Rey is whether or not he has the frame and the strength to be able to shed the blocks at the next level. His 20 reps on the bench press didn't do much to erase those doubts in scouts minds. If Rey can make improvements in his ability to shed blocks, he could become a Gary Brackett-esque player for the Jaguars.

According to the Experts
CDS Draft

Pros

Rey is a stocky, powerful player who has shown a tremendous ability to make plays. Rey is an excellent tackler who always gets the guy down and can deliver a pop as well. Has a low center of gravity and is able to get under the pads of the blockers and has the strength to shed them and get to the ball-carrier. Smart player who understands what the offense is doing and doesn't waste steps going the wrong way. Rey is solid in pursuit and takes good angles to the ball. Durable player who has shown solid leadership skills too.

Cons

Rey is a bit short and is not the most athletic player around. He's not flexible and doesn't have the COD and lateral agility to get to the outside. A real liability in pass coverage.

NFLDraftScout

He was basically a tackling machine and he had enough speed to make big plays. His athleticism is a strength, but he's probably a long shot as a draft selection.

National Football Post

A short, undersized middle linebacker prospect who possesses a long set of arms and a thick trunk, Rey has a nose for the ball inside and does a good job reading his run/pass keys. However, he struggles to take on blocks in all aspects of the game, lacks power at the point of attack and can be easily washed out of plays on contact. He doesn't use his hands well when trying to pick his way through traffic and gets cut down too easily on the inside. Rey has both above-average range and work rate in pursuit, but is easily knocked off balance and struggles to cleanly close on the ball.

He knows that he struggles when asked to stack and shed and will instead try to slip blocks and run around them. He consistently takes himself out of plays, losing sight of the ball. He showcases a good feel in zone coverage and displays the footwork to flip his hips and quickly get out of his breaks to close on the ball. Rey isn't a physical tackler in any area of the game. He's more of a drag-down guy, and from a physical standpoint doesn't have what it takes to find a spot on an NFL defense.
An interview Jeromy Miles did back in Decmber 2009. (It won't let me copy & paste)

He says he ran a 4.5 forty and his favorite player is Chad Johnson

From ESPN Chicago, on Jeromy Miles . . .

Dont count out the club making a play for Jeromy Miles of Massachusetts. He hasn't received as much publicity as some of the other prospects. But some scouts would actually consider Miles a steal in the third round. Others seem to think Miles performs better in a workout setting (he ran a 4.49 40-yard dash) than he does in live action.

Miles most impressive attributes appear to be closing speed, explosiveness and ability to hold his own against slot receivers in man-to-man coverage. Miles (6-2, 215 pounds), who transferred from the Naval Academy, served as a team captain in addition to being named academic all conference. So he appears to possess the mental prowess to handle the position.

From Sporting News War room . . .

Jeromy Miles
S, Massachusetts
Height: 6-2 Weight: 215
40-yard dash: 4.49

War Room analysis

Coverage skills: Has excellent cover skills. Can match up in man-to-man coverage off the line of scrimmage. Has the feet, hip movement, recovery and eyes to play tight coverage down the field. Shows natural awareness and anticipation skills as a zone defender. Does a great job of reading the quarterback's eyes and breaks quickly to the throw. Can track and adjust to the ball in the air, almost as well as a top receiver. Is physical with his jam to redirect receivers. Grade: 7.0

Coverage skills: Shows outstanding instincts and recognition skills. Is an aggressive and physical player against both the run and the pass. Plays with discipline on the edge in run support and takes excellent pursuit angles. Moves on the ball before it is in the air because of excellent anticipation skills. Grade: 7.5

Closing speed: Has excellent closing ability. Lacks elite-level explosiveness and burst. Can change gears with balance on the move. Has excellent range in coverage. Grade: 6.5

Ball skills: Grade: 7.0

Run support: Is an aggressive and physical player in run support. Is not afraid to get in on a tackle. Is a physical tackler who is capable of making the big hit to jar the ball loose. Is an outstanding tackler on the move at the perimeter and in space. Must do a better job of keeping his head up. Grade: 7.5

Bottom line: Miles will start as a rookie. He is a mature player in all phases of the game. He merits strong second-round consideration for a team that needs a starting safety in the fall. He would be a steal in the third round.

This dude from Sporting New (probably the same one that wrote the last bit above)
says Miles is the 2nd best undrafted player . . .

2. Jeromy Miles, S, UMass. He is a smart and instinctive safety with underrated athleticism. He is productive in run support and in coverage but is not an elite athlete and did not wow anyone at his pro-day workout.

Many believe that NFL general managers earn their paychecks based on their level of success in the later rounds of the draft by uncovering those hidden gems that can push a team over the top. With the NFL's scouting process now concluded, many names have been brought to the forefront that weren't exactly on the tip of anyone's tongues when the collegiate season started. This segment called Under the Radar will continue to explore just what scouts find attractive about certain prospects that may be available beyond the glamour rounds of the draft and why you're team may be interested in landing one of these sleepers in the upcoming draft.

As transfer from the Naval Academy, Jeromy Miles began his career at the University of Massachusetts in 2007 by instantly becoming a full time starter. His time at UMASS culminated in Miles being named as the team captain in 2009 during yet another successful campaign for the 6'2" 210 pounder. Miles is a ball hawk with tremendous instincts and the willingness to step up and help in defending the run game as well being a stout, wrap-up tackler. For his size, his pro day performance was quite impressive running a 4.45 seconds time in the 40 yard dash, producing a 10'10" broad jump, and showing his hops as well with a 35.5-inch vertical leap. Zone coverage is where Miles excels reading the eyes of the opposing quarterback and closing on the intended target quickly to breaks up passes.

Contrastingly, man coverage is an area where Miles will need to improve mightily often looking stiff in the hips with a very rigid backpedal. Although an instinctive nature is a desirable attribute in a safety, sometimes it needs to be tempered down a bit and he shows that at times over committing and getting beaten over the top on homerun plays. There will definitely be a step up competition wise for Miles moving to the NFL and he will have to understand more complex coverage schemes. Expect a learning curve for any team looking to land an immediate gem as Miles may take a year or two to fully develop. He may not be a sure thing, but with his intangibles and outstanding size/athleticism combination, Miles has steal written all over him anywhere from the 5th to the 7th round of the draft.

A number of names will be called during the upcoming NFL Draft that seem to be from out of left field, but don't let Jeromy Miles be one of them. Keep looking out for more Under the Radar players shooting up draft boards or quietly lurking in this incredibly deep 2010 class with the potential to make a huge impact over the coming years on Sundays.

Wow, this Miles kid sure seems like a helluva pickup. I know a lot of these write-ups are subjective and opinionated, but how did this guy not get drafted? Seems like his strengths really play well into our needs. So again, why didn't he get drafted? Because he's not a workout and drills warrior?

LSU offensive tackle Ciron Black has not signed a free agent contract with any NFL team, his agent Jimmy Sexton said Monday.

Internet reports, including one on Nola.com, had Black as one of the Pittsburgh Steelers' free agent signings but his name was not on the list the Steelers released on Monday.

Black, who started four years and a school record 53 games for the Tigers, was expected to be one of several LSU players drafted but his name was not called during the three-day draft.

"He has not," Sexton said when reached by phone Monday. Sexton declined to give further information.

Eight other undrafted LSU players were signed to free agent deals, including Harry Coleman who went to the Saints.

Just found this link on Vincent Rey, which includes some film.
He's definitely fast. Always the first one down the field on kickoffs and runs sideline to sideline to make tackles...

I'd love me some Tony Washington. I was hoping we'd take him in the 4-5 rd as a G to plug in and groom for LT. I guess the whole sleeping-with-his-sister thing really scared people off...

probably. It was widely reported, and proven, that Harrell didn't have the arm strength to throw out routes to the sideline. Those passes are a staple of the Bengals offense.

Billy Cundiff

Overview
Visited by scouts from 31 NFL teams in '09 after being named GLIAC Offensive POY ('08). Very accurate and productive passer who set almost every Ashland passing record. Great leadership and decision making abilities combine with strong, accurate arm have put him among the top passers in the country in '08 and '09 and making him a Harlon Hill nominee in both years as well.
Strengths
Very strong and accurate passer - protects the ball with only 1 INT against 24 TDs in 305 attempts in '09 (with very young o-line who gave-up 35 sacks). Cundiff's arm strength and good mechanics allow him to make throws other QBs can't. Among NCAA D-2 leaders in efficiency (163.62 in '09) ... excellent character and solid team leader who shows great poise under pressure - led team to first playoff victory in school history in '08. Hard worker who invests time watching film and in the weight room - added 15 pounds in off-season before '09 season to improve his durability.
Weaknesses
Occasionally will 'lock' on a receiver and ignore progression; sometimes tentative - had more of a 'gunslinger' attitude in '08 (37 TDs with 8 INTs) who would 'take more chances' to get the ball to his receivers.

Bengals sign eight undrafted rookie free agents
Duke linebacker Vincent Rey leads class
Aaron Wilson

April 26, 2010

The Cincinnati Bengals have signed several undrafted rookie linebackers, including Duke linebacker Vincent Rey.

Rey visited the New York Giants, Jacksonville Jaguars and the Oakland Raiders, according to a source close to the program.

A second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection and a three-year starter, Rey has intrigued NFL scouts with his 4.54 to 4.58 speed in the 40-yard dash.

At his March 22 campus Pro Day workout, the athletic 6-foot, 240-pounder registered a 38 1/2 inch vertical leap and a 10-6 broad jump.

He also bench pressed 225 pounds 20 times and turned in a 4.20 20-yard shuttle and a 6.79 three-cone drill.

Voted team captain last season, Rey recorded 98 tackles, 8 1/2 for losses, one sack and two interceptions.

As a junior, he was voted team captain and recorded 109 tackles, 10 1/2 for losses, two sacks and one interception. He scored two touchdowns.

As a sophomore, he posted 111 tackles, 8 1/2 for losses, 2 1/2 sacks.

The Bengals also agreed to terms with center Mike Windt, tight end Jeff Cottam, safety Bryan Evans, running back Mikell Simpson, running back Cordera Eason, running back Joe Tronzo and safety Jeromy Miles (S).

Simpson rushed for 386 years and five touchdowns last season for Virginia.

Bengals sign safety of the future, other college free agents
By Ken Paxson | Monday, April 26, 2010, 03:13 PM

As usual the Bengals have been signing college free agents at a frenzied pace, but there is one in particular that stands out.

The man who I believe could be Cincinnati's strong safety of the future is Jeromy Miles of the University of Massachusetts.

Miles (6-2, 215 pounds) went undrafted, but was ranked ninth at his position and was projected to go in the sixth or seventh round by cbssports.com.

UMass is a Football Championship Series school on the gridiron —Â the same level as the University of Dayton — but the kid played big-time in the subdivision.

He was a first team AP All-American and was named to the Walter Camp FCS All-America Team, which honors the game's top players. Miles had 62 tackles along with two interceptions and five passes defended in 2009.

You can find out everything you need to know about Miles on his UMass profile page.

Also competing for a job at safety will be Bryan Evans of Georgia. Evans (5-11, 194) was projected to go in the seventh round by cbssports.com and was ranked 16th at the free safety spot by the Website.

Another interesting name on the Bengals' college free agent list is Mike Windt, a long snapper from the University of Cincinnati. The 6-1, 251-pound Windt is ranked second at his position and will provide competition for incumbent Clark Harris.

Other college free agent signings by the Bengals, as gathered from various reports, include the players below.

Signees are listed by name, position, school, size and round they were projected to be slected.

Vincent Rey, LB, Duke, 6-2 240, 7th round

Mikell Simpson, RB, Virginia, 6-0 200, free agent

Jeff Cottam, TE, Tennessee, 6-7 262, free agent

Rey might be the kind of guy that makes the bottom of the roster, but dresses on game day, a la Dan Skuta, who was a pretty good ST coverage guy last year. This kid can run, and he's got some good size to him, so he's got a shot.

I think Muckleroy will be battling Hodge and Jeanty for a spot... Hodge is a MLB, and Muckelroy can play both inside and outside. Jeanty's an outside guy.

I think Mucky pushes Hodge right off the roster, and takes over his teams duties to get him dressing each week.

I don't think Jeanty, coming off a broken leg, is safe either. They love his toughness, but he has limited upside.

Muck will definitely make the team, its just a matter of which one of them he replaces. Considering Muck can play all 3 spots, it could be either one of them.

I go with Jeanty over Hodge, a broken leg isnt career threatening or even much at all to worry about.
