I don't get how Barron is so highly rated. He's certainly a solid prospect but looks maxed out to me. He's smart and well coached. He tackles well and recognizes running plays. He is also inconsistent in coverage and can't play well deep. He benefits from playing on a defense where opponents didn't have much time to throw. If Winston Guy had gone to Alabama and Mark Barron to Kentucky, I think Guy would be drafted before Barron.
Barron has never been healthy enough to run the 40 right?

That scares me a little bit. We've seen some guys (Crabtree) who were injured and couldn't run and then got to the NFL and looked slower than expected.

The thing that does impress me about Barron though is the length of his arms. The long arms combined with his height is pretty impressive and fits what the Bengals seem to look for in Safeties.

SI's Tony Pauline has heard that the Bengals "will" use one of their first-round picks on Alabama DE/OLB Courtney Upshaw.
The Bengals' interest in Upshaw has been known for months, although they may not necessarily be so locked in if players like Notre Dame's Michael Floyd, North Carolina's Quinton Coples, and Alabama's Dre Kirkpatrick start falling. What is clear is Cincinnati has a first-round grade on Upshaw, whereas many teams are less high on him. He's a realistic possibility at 17 or 21.

In a survey by Yahoo Sports, eight of 18 NFL personnel men rated North Alabama's Janoris Jenkins as the draft's most talented cornerback.
"He could be one of the best cornerbacks in the league for 10 years," said one personnel man. "I'm a (Morris) Claiborne guy, but I'd take Jenkins in a heartbeat if Claiborne wasn't there and if Jenkins didn't have so many issues," said another. Jenkins is widely expected to fall to day two, but it's not inconceivable a team picking late on day one will decide he's worth the first-round risk.
There's so much jibber jabber happening leading up to the draft. I'll be glad when it's over and the damned thing happens. I think Rob Rang, along with Mayock, is the best talking head/non-NFL person on the draft. He does a good job, in particular, of identifying "sleeper" types of guys who can be had in later rounds. Here's a link to his top 64, done late last week. It's not a mock draft, so it's more like Mayock's Top 100, regardless of team needs. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/big-board
how do you like his latest mock? notice, it's a 2 rounder.

Wow, talk about a dream 1st two rounds.

Michael Floyd, Dontari Poe and Doug Martin.

You could get a top guard in the 3rd and add depth guys all over the place on D with the 5 Saturday picks....

i'm sitting here trying to imagine two things with that mock. the first, just how good would our offense be. the second, how would dontari poe fit.

it's nothing to dwell on, martin would never make it all the way to #53.

17 -- Cincinnati -- Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama
The Bengals prefer Gilmore, but they take Kirkpatrick because they have a need at corner.

21 -- Cincinnati -- Courtney Upshaw, DE, Alabama
He’s a steal at this spot, a guy Mike Zimmer will find many ways to utilize

17. CINCINNATI BENGALS: DRE KIRKPATRICK, CB, ALABAMA
Character concerns could result in Kirkpatrick dropping a bit in the first round, but the Bengals would be getting good value here. The pick fills a major need, too.

21. CINCINNATI BENGALS: COURTNEY UPSHAW, LB/DE, ALABAMA
The Bengals probably weren't expecting Upshaw to drop this far, but Marvin Lewis could find a way to utilize him on a young and improving defense. Maybe he won't ever be an elite pass rusher, but Upshaw is a solid football player who could move around into a number of different roles.

17. Cincinnati (from Oakland)
Michael Floyd

Wide Receiver | Notre Dame

First Mock Selection: Michael Floyd/WR/Notre Dame
Analysis: Floyd would give the Bengals really good size at the wide receiver position.
Needs: WR, RB, CB, DT, DE
Other Possibilities: Kendall Wright, Michael Brockers (should he drop) or Quinton Coples.

21. Cincinnati
Doug Martin

First Mock Selection: Doug Martin/RB/Boise State
Analysis: Here would be your new Bengals starting RB from the start of training camp.
Needs: WR, RB, CB, DT, DE
Other Possibilities: Trade up for a cornerback. Dontari Poe.

I just watched my first video of Chandler Jones. He was playing Pittsburgh... and outside of a TFL at the very end and an awesome INT, I didn't think he played that well. I came away more impressed with #34 from Pittsburgh. That guy is a willing blocker back there. Back to Chandler... definitely looked stronger than everyone else, but I didn't see any "moves". It was just him using some drive and just trying to punch his way through the lineman. I definitely wasn't impressed.

I just watched Coples vs VT. I like him better than Jones, but I wasn't wow'd by him either. I don't look at either of these guys as very high picks. Coples is a big dude you can tell, but I didn't see much production in the game. David Wilson looked quick but wasn't much for yards after contact at all. He is definitely a guy you'd like to get in the open field though.

There is no way in hell that happens unless 1 through 16 is very CB heavy.

Brockers vs GA... the guy has a motor. I actually saw him (and I know this wasn't intentional) being blocked by 3 guys one play. He looks really quick and strong and wreaks havoc continuously. I don't know any #'s, but it looks like he has really long arms and his hands are super quick. I think I like Fletcher Cox slightly better but Brockers isn't too far behind. He was impressive.

I think the thing to consider with jones is that he's not a finished product. He's not maxed out physically, and has to learn more than just a bull rush. He's got great measurables though and is a good run defender.

Courtney Upshaw vs Florida. I think the guy seems athletic, but a slow athletic. He dropped back in a coverage and looked great doing it but he's just too big and I can't move fast enough to do that in the NFL. I think the only reason he could do that at Alabama is because the guy has NFL talent surrounding him everywhere. If you could not pass, Upshaw is your man. The guy looks great against the run and reminds me of Fanene... a stout, strong guy who has a high motor. He's just looks huge out there. I wouldn't take him in the 1st with either of our picks. He seems like a guy you'd put at DT on 3rd down. Quick enough to make an impact there (DT), fast enough laterally to get to a draw (again, at DT), but not good enough to play DE every down. Another positive: he doesn't seem like a shit head. Sounds like he has his priorities in order.

I wouldn't even call those bull rushes (what I saw anyway). It was a grasp and toss that wasn't super effective. I still don't like him... I want my 1st rounder to have traits that I'll be able to use from day 1 on my defense. I just didn't think he offered that.

I just think he needs to use his hands better. When he does that, I think he has all the physical tools to be a 10 sack a year DE.

Marvin Jones from Cal... willing blocker down field. He'll make a half ass attempt if it's going to be a hard collision and he's seen by the defender. If it's close quarters, I'll dig his cleats in the dirt and push. Only watched one game though...
