They lost, but they won!

The regular season is over, and the seedings are set for the playoffs. I have mixed emotions about how some of the teams enter the postseason. Momentum is usually a critical factor heading into the playoffs, but it isn't always the most important component.

The Houston Texans, Cincinnati Bengals and Denver Broncos advanced into the dance without winning in Week 17 wins. Sure, the New Orleans Saints entered the postseason on a three-game losing streak and went on to win the Super Bowl, but I don't have any faith that either of those three teams will repeat the Saints' title run.

Houston won its division but finished the season on a three-game losing streak and can barely break the 20-point barrier without injured quarterback Matt Schaub.

The Texans face a Bengals squad that went a combined 0-7 against teams in the playoffs this season, including a 20-19 loss to the Texans three weeks ago. Two rookie quarterbacks most likely will face off in this game, and as I pointed out in my "Trends in the Game" piece last week, things are tough for rookie quarterbacks in the postseason.

Since the merger, rookie quarterbacks are 6-9 in playoff games and no rookie ever has led his team to a Super Bowl. The Bengals couldn't stop Ray Rice on the ground this week (24 carries for 191 yards and two touchdowns) and they will struggle against Arian Foster and Ben Tate, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Bengals won an ugly game.

Neither team is going any further than the first round, however.

I like the all-whites over the odd looking black pants road combo.
Bengals are 1-0 in the whites against the AFCS as well..

Playing from behind vs with the lead
Yesterday was another example of the Bengals defense putting pressure on the Bengals offense.
The Bengals fell behind 7-0, and 17-3 to Baltimore.
I wondered how much time the Bengals have actually played with the lead this season.
Joe Reedy, of the Enquirer, took up the challenge.

960 total minutes of football
Bengals have been tied 23% of season (261:41)
Bengals have led 31% of season (296:14)
Bengals have trailed 46% of season (447:05)

So... How has Houston changed since we played them? I haven't watched them since.
andre johnson should be back, yates has regressed some, and I think they lost one of their olinemen, but not sure about that.

Further on our end, the secondary seems a lot more adjusted, and I beleive Andre Smith missed most of the first Houston game.

I think he missed all of it - it was when we had Collins and Gilles in when BW went down that we lost the offensive edge.

Their lineman lost was Mike Brisiel, who broke his leg against us and finished the game. I think he might be back this week. Andre Johnson played in week 17 but they limited his snaps so he hasn't had time to develop chemistry with Yates.

T.J. Yates threw well on Monday

Posted by Josh Alper on January 2, 2012, 5:51 PM EST

It looks like the Texans will avoid having to turn to Jake Delhomme for their first-ever playoff game.

Coach Gary Kubiak said that quarterback T.J. Yates threw well on Monday, one day after he was forced out of the Texans’ season finale with the Titans. Yates suffered a separated left shoulder, but, per John McClain of theHouston Chronicle, Kubiak expects to have Yates in the starting lineup against the Bengals.

Yates was 4-for-4 for 47 yards before being forced out of the game in the first quarter. Delhomme went 18-of-28 for 211 yards in his first NFL action of the season. His performance was good enough that the Texans probably feel comfortable turning to him should Yates be forced out of Saturday’s contest.

T.J. Yates did not throw Monday. The players were off. When Gary Kubiak said he threw well but was sore, he was talking about in the game.
