The Steelers were counting on their receiver depth easing the transition to a new offense this offseason.
The only problem is, one absence has revealed they may not have as much as they thought.
With Mike Wallace continuing his holdout, the Steelers realize they’re one injury awayfrom someone from a bunch of unknowns seeing the field.
If Wallace is alongside Antonio Brown, Emmanuel Sanders and Jerricho Cotchery, they’re not worried. But Wallace isn’t there (and there’s no indication he’s on his way anytime soon), leaving the Steelers wondering who else they have.
“I haven’t seen any distinct separation at this point, but it’s still early” coordinator Todd Haley told Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, when asked about the remaining candidates.
Beyond the first three, the only player with NFL experience is Derrick Williams, who caught nine passes for the Lions in 2009 and 2010 but was out of the league last year. Otherwise, all they have are first-year players and rookies, with seventh-rounder Toney Clemons the only pick of the bunch.
If Wallace stays away until the final six weeks of the season (all he needs to become an unrestricted free agent next year), the Steelers might have a problem, and the answers might not be on hand.
“It’s very critical, because you get thin real quick if we don’t have a couple of those guys,” Haley said of the young group. “But, like I said, there is ability, and there are some flashes of things you like to see. I don’t think the cupboard’s bare, it’s young.”
Bouchette also mentioned the possibility of Plaxico Burress (though that’s more like rolling a grenade into a foxhole of fans). The fact no one’s signed him yet should be revealing, as his side has made it known league-wide he’s not looking for a payday, just a chance.
The Steelers might be desperate, but they’re not that desperate yet.

The long wait for the practice returns of Ravens tackleBryant McKinnie and defensive tackle Haloti Ngata could be coming to an end.
McKinnie tweeted Friday that he and Ngata passed the team’s conditioning test. If true, they’d be ready to start practicing as soon as Friday since the Ravens are holding an afternoon practice.
Praise God I'm back 2 good health! & Haloti & I ran & passed the condition test this morning.—
Bryant Mckinnie (@BryantMckinnie) August 03, 2012
Ngata has been dealing with a hamstring injury and, per Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times, looks heavier than he did last season. It’s not likely to affect his role on the defense, however.
McKinnie’s role is a little less clear. His absence from the start of camp caused him to incur daily fines of $30,000 and then he showed up with a back injury McKinnie says happened when he slipped and fell at his Miami home. If McKinnie doesn’t hit the ground running, the Ravens might opt for keeping Michael Oher at left tackle for the long haul.

I agree. I've seen him escape from a certain sack, only to convert an impossible 3rd and long for a first down, far too many times. He is a superb QB. Unorthodox, and whiny, but great.

I guess this thread is as good as any for this...

I was listening to an interview with the Steelers long-time beat writer, Jim Wexxel (or something like that) and he was saying it is far from a guarantee that David Decastro will be the opening day starter at one of the guard spots. Says he looks good on screens and out in space but that he is getting man handled by the Steelers D Lineman. Said he is under-sized compared to the Steelers other OGs who are better able to get push and also better able to hold up against the bull rush in pass protection.

Found that pretty interesting and seems to back up what some of the scouting reports were saying about Decastro.

Also, he mentioned that Mendenhall is probably going to miss the whole season and that the Steelers would likely move on without him. They really like Redman. He'd be coming off of an injury (though with 18 months to heal) in 2013, but he'd be an interesting FA option. I remember the Bengals liked him in the draft and those are often the types of guys we pursue.

Matt Birk is dinged up for the Ravens. At 36, who knows what that means.

Ravens center Matt Birk missed a sixth straight practice on Saturday because of back spasms, making it more likely that he will be on the sideline when the Ravens kick off the preseason on Thursday against the Falcons.
It’s the latest in a series of health issues for the 36-year-old, who missed part of spring workouts after having surgery to repair varicose veins in his legs. He’s had knee troubles in the last two seasons, but Birk has never missed a game since coming to Baltimore. Coach John Harbaugh sounded like he wanted to keep it that way when he all but ruled out Birk for the game.
“Matt is resting,” Harbaugh said, via the Baltimore Sun. “He had some back spasms, too. It’s probably both me and Matt. Matt has had the back spasms, but I am going to probably slow him down a little bit more, especially this week, and then maybe next week after the game, we will get him back a little bit more.”
On Saturday, Birk expressed hope that he’d be able to play but it seems hard to believe that the team would find it necessary to play him for a handful of plays when he’s been unable to get on the field at camp. It’s much more important to make sure that Birk is ready to answer the bell for the regular season, especially since rookie Gino Gradkowski could use the extra work that will come his way against the Falcons.

Where have you gone, Laurent Robinson?
Cowboys receiver Miles Austin, who suffered a hamstring injury during the 2011 preseason that plagued him all year long, has another hamstring injury, according to DallasCowboys.com.
Executive V.P. Stephen Jones says he isn’t worried about the situation, even though Austin missed six games last year with hamstring issues.
Overall, Jones should be worried. A full 19 players are injured, in some degree or another.
“I wouldn’t say they’re dropping like flies,” Jones said, via the team’s website. “We’ve got some work to do and we’re probably going to have to look at bringing some guys in. The good news is there’s not anything catastrophic or that we’re concerned about for the long haul, but shoot, this is training camp. We go through this every year.”
Jones explained that injuries are part of the preseason, and one of the reasons when the rosters grew by 10 spots this year.
“[W]e addressed it on the Competition Committee, and I think you need it, we’ve got to have 90 players,” Jones said. “So, that’s a good thing. We used to work from 80. We’ve got 10 freebies, and it’s still not enough.”
Still, it’s not as if great players can be replaced by anyone. During a visit from owner Jerry Jones on Wednesday’s Dan Patrick Show (which created enough buzz to land on Tom Brokaw’s radar screen in London), Jones shrugged at the departure of Laurent Robinson, explaining that one of the team’s young receivers would step up and do what Robinson did last season.
But Robinson did more than take advantage of the openings underneath the coverage applied to Austin and Bryant. Robinson started those games Austin missed. While the running back position possibly has evolved (or perhaps devolved) to the point where any guy hanging around the practice field can be plugged in, it’s likely not that easy for receivers.
And so, even though Jerry Jones danced around the question of whether there’s any set of circumstances in which the team would bring back Terrell Owens, Jones may have to consider whether bringing in a veteran at some point makes more sense than hoping the light goes on for one of the various newbies.

We’d hate to see how many injuries Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger would have if he weren’t wearing a red jersey in practice.
Already suffering (so he claims) from a partially torn rotator cuff in his shoulder, Roethlisberger sprained his left ankle at practice on Saturday after being stepped on by a defensive lineman, according to USAToday.com.
It’s the same ankle he injured during the 2011 season against the Browns.
Roethlisberger limped off the field. He later had it wrapped in an icepack.
The quarterback also addressed his relationship with offensive coordinator Todd Haley, which has yet to turn frosty.
“We’re just kind of waiting for it,” Roethlisberger said regarding a potential explosion from the former Chiefs head coach and Cardinals offensive coordinator. “Todd’s the only guy to ever make Kurt Warner cuss.”
Roethlisberger and Haley seem to be working well together, so far.
“I think our relationship is growing and I can see where Todd’s vision of us is headed,” Roethlisberger said. “It’s all about winning. You have to put aside egos and put aside wanting to run the ball, wanting to throw the ball to just win and that’s what we both want to do.”
As long as the Steelers win, there won’t be any trouble between Roethlisberger and Haley. If they don’t, that’s when things could get ugly.

I park at the Chiquita center on 6th and its only 5 bucks. Never have to fight traffic and it's a parking garage so you don't have to leave your car in the elements. The walk to the car sucks but we usually swing by skyline and Koch's sporting goods if we need any bengals garb.

If I were a richer man, I'd park closer though :)

“It’s a shame,” Lewis said following Sunday’s Black/White Mock Game. “I had a chance to communicate a little bit today with Andy. I just feel sorry.
