Slag911 Posted April 5, 2013 Report Posted April 5, 2013 I just found out there is a good chance I might be going to the draft this year on Thursday for the first round. Has anyone been up to NY to Radio City Music Hall recently? My friend and I need to figure out some logistics quick on this if we can go. We have the tickets though and that is really the only thing that matters. Any information on what to expect and any details of the event would be appreciated.
scharm Posted April 5, 2013 Report Posted April 5, 2013 Hotel Costs. If it gets too outrageous price wise. Consider sub-way options. I used to stay in Queens that had a 5 minute train ride 42nd street Manhattan and room was nicer and cheaper that what you could find on 42nd.
Tigris Posted April 5, 2013 Report Posted April 5, 2013 That's cool news. I've been in NY once and it's a concrete hell. When you get there, park your car in a garage, pay whatever you have to, and walk or find some other means of transportation. It's not worth driving yourself around that city. You'll thank me later.
Slag911 Posted April 5, 2013 Author Report Posted April 5, 2013 Thinking of taking a train from Baltimore and then taxing around town. Never been to NY though. My friend won tickets via the play 60 program for schools and we are apparently "guests" of the Baltimore Ravens. I wonder how I'll fare with my A.J. Green Jersey? Probably better off then a Ravens fan walking around New York. Still some bitterness there I'm sure. It also means we have to stay late so my friend can watch the Ravens pick. All good problems though...

Agree wholeheartedly. There is more than enough public transportation to move around in that city without ever stressing yourself out trying to drive around!
fluhartz Posted April 5, 2013 Report Posted April 5, 2013 Agree wholeheartedly. There is more than enough public transportation to move around in that city without ever stressing yourself out trying to drive around! 2nd this.. I was in NYC last fall. I would want no part of driving around in that place. Cabs and trains go everywhere. Also it will be April, the weather should be nice. Walking works unless you're going a long ways.
HairOnFire Posted April 5, 2013 Report Posted April 5, 2013 . I wonder how I'll fare with my A.J. Green Jersey? I hereby propose a draft night drinking game where we all drink a shot each time Slag gets his face on camera.
Slag911 Posted April 5, 2013 Author Report Posted April 5, 2013 I'll be the bald guy screaming and hollering when we pick. Does anyone remember whether or not the legends make the pics in the first round? Last year they started having sports legends like Emmitt Smith annouce the pics for their teams but i thought that was the second day???

If they want a real legend they will have Mante Teo's girlfriend announce his pick.

Slag911 Posted April 5, 2013 Author Report Posted April 5, 2013 If they want a real legend they will have Mante Teo's girlfriend announce his pick. Now that is a dare...go to the draft with a "I'm Manti Teo's girlfriend" shirt with a big old cheesy picture of him on the front.
Slag911 Posted April 5, 2013 Author Report Posted April 5, 2013 If I do get the nod...I'll post some pics and try to keep y'all entertained. I might entertain some people with creative ideas on what to do while Im there. I was thinking of randomly screaming "biscuit" in the middle of the draft. Kind of a funny tradition with a long story... Anyone got an XL Orange Stormtrooper outfit with Tiger Stripes I can borrow?
The PatternMaster Posted April 5, 2013 Report Posted April 5, 2013 I used to live in NYC and worked right acrossed the street from Radio City, I would see people camped out in lines during draft time. If you're taking the train to NYC you can either walk from Penn or Grand Central Station because it's not that far to Radio City Music Hall from either location and will get to see the sights of the big city. Manhattan is a great town to walk, especially midtown because it's on the grid system so you can't get lost, well it's very hard to get lost in Midtown. Just be ready to deal with alot of idiot sport fans as NYC has the worst, outside of Steeler fans. The Jets fans are the worst because they have a little brother complex and their team sucks. Most people from NYC are ignorant of everything that's not in a 90 mile radius of their city, I once told a co-worker I was from Ohio and he said, "is that next to Idaho"... :29: There are some great resturants and gentlemen clubs in that part of town, if you're interest in that kind of thing. Lastly bring plenty of money because midtown is expensive as hell, everything is jacked up for tourist. If you scream loud enough you will get on TV...I guarantee it.
NYKrumrie Posted April 5, 2013 Report Posted April 5, 2013 I live in NYC! (not kind words about my fair city being a "concrete hell". I love the city :-) I rock a Krumrie Jersey, Bengal flag as a cape & a crazy Bengal stripped "Pizza Hat" on game days & at the draft. I'll be there like I was last year. Since you already have tix the hard part is over. If you need tix you need to start Q'ing up at Radio City Music Hall around 9-10pm the night before. They start handing out wristbands at midnight. I think I'll post a "How-To" about the draft seperately since it doesn't pertain to you. Here are my tips. -If you can take the train from B'more do that. You can tailgate your way to NYC. Plus you won't have to worry about parking, traffic & DUI. -If you are staying for day 2 check Priceline & name a price for a Hotel. Or try Hotwire they generally do a good job. -No matter where you go or if you get a hotel the subway or taxi will get you there. in a pitch, you can go from any point A to point B in the 5 burroughs for $40-50 taxi. -Between 7am-11am & 4pm-7pm subways will beat rush hour taxi traffic everytime. -Once in the city you should hit the "Bengal Bar" to get in the Draught mood!! http://www.phebesnyc.com/ -They sell beer at the event but its hard to find & expensive like eveything in NYC. -There are some good sports bar/pubs in the area too. Let me know if you have any other questions? Enjoy its a Giant Fancy Man-Cave Blast!! Who Dey!!!
alleycat Posted April 5, 2013 Report Posted April 5, 2013 I'm also a New Yorker and have been to the draft. A few tips. First, if you're going to come up from Baltimore, don't even think about taking the train. Take the Bolt Bus for $15 ($25 round trip) or so and save $150+ round trip. The bus only takes about 10-15 minutes longer (a true indictment of infrastructure problems in this country; Amtrak/Acela's speed train is an international disgrace). It will dump you in the same spot (Penn Station) and the train doesn't even have the wifi that the bus does (and if you want to figure out how to use a proxy server to get around their firewalls to stream movies or maybe watch live coverage let me know haha). Radio City is fun, and the draft is OK to attend. Hopefully they'll have good wifi and you can bring an ipad or something to really follow the draft (you're information flow is more restricted there. There's lots of stuff to do around there, but if you're looking for more authentic NY experiences feel free to PM me. The B'more people won't give a Rat's ass that you are wearing a Bengals jersey. My gf used to sing the national anthem at Giants games and when we played them I'd actually be on the Giants sidelines and in Tisch's owner's box (with an Odell Jersey on, lol). The NFL, as an organization, is very mixed and fan friendly. DirecTV has really revolutionized the fan-away-from home reality, IMO, which is a good thing. OF course, NYC is ground zero for people away from home, so you'll definitely hear some who-dey's when you're there. As for housing, check the sites mentioned for last minute, but also hit up Craigslist and Airbnb and even Homeaway or couchsurfing (again, if you want to save money). Pretty much everyone here rents out their places when they leave town, because why not have someone else help you pay your mortgage when you're away? Your choices run the gamut from literally someone's sofa to multimillion dollar loft/mansions. Regardless, it's an insanely better value than most hotels. I'd recommend looking in Brooklyn as well, both because you can keep costs down and it's far cooler than Manhattan.
Slag911 Posted April 5, 2013 Author Report Posted April 5, 2013 Thanks for the info guys. Is there assigned seating or is it general admission for the draft? Just curious because we won't get the tix via fed ex till the week of the draft per the info we have been given.
alleycat Posted April 5, 2013 Report Posted April 5, 2013 I think unless you are one of the guys waiting to get in for tix (which I haven't done), you have assigned seats. I can't speak to those who wait, but they are a pretty rowdy, excitable bunch so it's pretty much mosh-like from what I've seen anyway.

I'm sure if I didn't get lost in the Jewish capital of the world I would have liked it better. I was scared, upset, and mad all at the same time. Was just another world to me I was not prepared for at all. Arriving at 2:00am sure as heck didn't help either I'm guessing.

I hereby suggest that we begin a "Get Tigris a Passport" donation fund immediately. Hell, while we're at it let's just send him someplace "different." How about someplace that isn't too shocking to start off with, so he at least learns to feel the thrill of being outside his element. Of course, if NYC was too much, we're in a bit of a pickle there. Any ideas?

Tigris Posted April 5, 2013 Report Posted April 5, 2013  ...subtle racism...nice.. I couldn't remember the name of where it was but there was Holistic (I think) Jews everywhere. I nicknamed the place the Jew capital. Hardly racism. It's fact wherever I was there was a substantial amount of Jews. Are Jews even a race? If I become a Jew has my race changed? Serious question.

Any ideas? Got one. Been to MX, Bahamas, multiple parts of CN, and Grand Cayman. NY is a place not like any other (that I've experienced anyway). I'd much rather go to Gatlinburg, TN. I'd really like to go overseas one day but we'll see what happens. UK, Germany, Italy, Israel, Japan would be cool to experience.

Tigris Posted April 5, 2013 Report Posted April 5, 2013 2:00am, I wind up in downtown NY by the underground tunnels. It's jam packed. I didn't even mean to end up there. I meant to stop in NJ but ended up in NYC. I came up over a hill and it was in my face and it was too late to turn around. I don't get back to NJ until 3:00am or later and sleep for like 5 hours, get up, and truck back into NYC to not only fight the construction and traffic again but to get lost a second time in less than 12 hours. It was a mess and I hated it. If I were alone I would have slept in my car in a hotel's parking lot (definitely no vacancy) but my wife started freaking out too so I just drove west until I found an exit outside of the city that didn't look like there were half a million people awake jamming the streets.
