I think the "sneak" part may be lost if they sub in the QB2

Simple. You have the QB in shotgun like we always are and the TE goes in motion and stops under center right before taking the snap. No subbing needed.

Way too much contact and chances for a twisted knee or ankle under that pile to place your MVP in that scrum.

Who is Sam Darnold? San Francisco backup QB may start vs Cincinnati with Brock Purdy out

San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback Brock Purdy is in concussion protocol, meaning the Cincinnati Bengals could face Sam Darnold in their NFL Week 8 showdown Sunday at Levi's Stadium.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Purdy is unlikely to play against Cincinnati, based on the trend that no NFL player placed in concussion protocol this season has played the same week.

Darnold hasn't faced the Bengals since he was with the New York Jets in 2019. And he could be without star offensive tackle Trent Williams, who missed San Francisco's Wednesday practice with an ankle injury.

What to know about the 26-year-old Darnold:

Darnold's only game against the Bengals was memorable for Zac Taylor.

Darnold started for the Jets in a 22-6 loss December 1, 2019, to Cincinnati in Taylor's first win as the Cincinnati Bengals' head coach.

Darnold was 28-of-48 with 239 passing yards in the game, without a touchdown or interception. He was sacked four times.

Darnold was the third overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft.

Darnold was one of four quarterbacks taken in the first 10 picks in 2018: Baker Mayfield went first overall to Cleveland; Josh Allen was selected seventh by the Buffalo Bills; and the Arizona Cardinals took Josh Rosen 10th.

The Bengals' first-round pick in 2018 was center Billy Price (21st overall). It was the same year the Bengals drafted Jessie Bates and Sam Hubbard.

Darnold is one of two former USC quarterbacks, along with Carson Palmer, to be selected among the top 3 picks of the draft.

Palmer, the Bengals' top pick and top overall pick in the 2003 draft, spent eight seasons with the Bengals after not playing the first season after he was drafted.

Only current Trojans QB Caleb Williams has had more single-season passing yardage than Darnold or Palmer by a Southern Cal quarterback. Williams had 4,537 last season. Darnold had 4,143 in 2017. Palmer had 3,942 in 2002.

Darnold has completed his only attempt this season, for 1 yard.

Darnold hasn't seen the field much through seven weeks this season.

Darnold started six games for the Carolina Panthers last season, passing for 1,143 yards with seven touchdowns and three interceptions. Carolina was 4-2 in Darnold's starts.

He played in 12 games for Carolina in 2021, his first season with the Panthers.

In three seasons as the Jets' starter, Darnold had 8,097 passing yards with 45 TDs and 39 INTs.

The Bengals have been notoriously bad against backups, see Trevor Sieman, TJ Yates, etc...hopefully, they don't let Darnold get confidence early and score some points so he can just hand off the ball to CMC.

Still have PTSD from the Halloween Mike White game...

Brock Purdy returns to 49ers practice

Published October 26, 2023 04:31 PM

There’s a chance the 49ers will have their starting quarterback when they play the Bengals on Sunday.

Brock Purdy returned to practice on Thursday after missing Wednesday’s session while in concussion protocol, according to multiple reporters on the scene.

Just because Purdy was participating — likely on a limited basis — doesn’t mean he’s cleared. But it’s a positive sign, as it means he’s progressing and could be on the field for Week 8.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Wednesday that Purdy began experiencing concussion-related symptoms on the flight back to California following Monday night’s loss to the Vikings.

Purdy has completed 68 percent of his passes for 1,668 yards with 11 touchdowns and three interceptions this season.

If Purdy is unable to play in Week 8, Sam Darnold will start in his place.
