Keeping our enemies close: 2024

I'm not so sure on the Bears drafting Williams.

Another runner with a good arm.

Fields has that

Put another pass protecter and a skill player and the team could  challenge in the NFCN.

They have the cap and draft slots to do this .

Watch them fuck it up up..

.Da Bears...

Fields was thrown into a bad situation with a lame duck coach who preferred Dalton. But he also hasn't made the most of his opportunities. He's missed the read on a lot of open receivers and sometimes just missed the throw. That's largely why the Bears are considering taking a QB at 1. Of course if they didn't have the top pick, the conversation in Chicago would be about adding more weapons and better protection for Fields to achieve his ceiling.

Pittsburgh seems to have internal conflict over who the QB should be. Worst case for them would be Rudolph leaving and Pickett being handed the starting job. They obviously don't believe in him as he was a healthy scratch in the playoffs.

I'll tell ya that the Inbreds don't put a priority on the QB position

Oline..front 7 is a their mantra.

There's word that they really like Fuaga and JPJ with their first pick because they're beastly maulers.

Seems to work.

I think there's a lot of click bait BS going on about the Stealers situation. They likely never were interested in Wilson et al. This sounds accurate to me:

Who really wants Wilson?

He's washed and the league knows it.

Denver fucked up upon his signing.

What Denver does about their horrible decision to acquire RW is a completely different one from what the Stealers should do under center. Yeah the Broncos have really screwed themselves a good one here

Wilson actually played pretty well last year. He had a 26-8 TD/Int ratio.

You gotta look deeper than the stats. His head coach is paid to do exactly that and he wants Wilson gone. He saw the film where Wilson couldn't see the field and wide open receivers weren't seeing the ball. It'll be interesting to see if any team is interested in Russell Wilson and if so, who eats what in salary

Denver will have to eat at least half of it.

I think they're willing to do so

His  leadership had waned

Do had his talent.

Wilson is guaranteed 39 million from the Broncos this year (subject to offset). They'll cut him before the date early in the league year where they would have to guarantee him another 35 mil for 2025.

The oddsmakers have Pittsburgh as the favorite to sign him. Wilson's floor is certainly higher than Pickett's.

George Paton should have been fired as the Denver GM after trading for Wilson, extending him on a bloated contract (which didn't even start until 2024), and hiring Paul Hackett. Sean Payton is a good coach but he's mishandled the QB he inherited. Now Denver has cap problems, are short of players on rookie deals, and need a new QB. Not good.

The NFL is really the only league which (sort of) has a salary cap. And they are certainly the only league which (sort of) attempts to enforce it. Even with “sort of” restrictions, franchises work around it all of the time.

MLB has a curious form of a “cap”—a multi-tiered tax imposition on those franchises which exceed the limit. There really is no end to how much they want to spend—just how much the owners wish to be taxed on exceeding the soft cap. The Dodgers/Yankees/Atlanta don’t care a hoot. I find it interesting that the one of the two World Series participants last fall was well under the soft cap.

Would be interesting to see if the NFL/NFLPA would ever consider this avenue.

Dak has them by the short and curlies. His cap number for the last year of his current deal is about 60 mil. So they need to sign him to a new contract to drop his cap number so they can re-sign Lamb and extend Parsons. So he'll take $56 mil or whatever on a 5 year extension.

I guess the NHL doesn't count.

The MLB has a "cap" that allows teams with tons of money to dance around it at will.  Everyone knows that teams in flyover country have to do things perfectly to compete.  One of the reasons baseball is dying and has gone from the "national pastime" to #3 and dropping.  Running the NFL like MLB drag the football juggernaut down?  Who knows.

Yeah the NHL has a cap.

MLB’s description as the “national pastime”, was well before TV took over the driving force of viewing. It was, in reality, the only game in town. But the sport has, supposedly, been “dying” for 50 years. Flood and Messersmith were supposed to allow every rich owner to buy championships every year. And yet, more lower-budget teams have won WS titles since then than the Yankees, Dodgers, Atlanta and Mets combined. That’s a lot of “perfection” over the years.

Again, that’s not to say that permitting unfettered spending is good for the sport—it isn’t. The Dodgers just spent an ungodly amount of money on two Japanese players, and did so without blinking an eye. But the Dodgers have also won 217 regular season games in two seasons…and haven’t made it past the divisional rounds. Money can’t buy me love, as the song goes.

Maybe the NFL can keep the lid on the money volcano. Maybe it doesn’t matter.

It's not that easy for Denver. They can't swallow his cap hit of $85mill if they cut him in March. It looks like Pitt was never interested in him. They're in quite a pickle
