But, but, I thought the orange troll was going to bring gas prices down.

Drill, baby, drill!

I could live with paying an extra 50 cents if it meant Alaska was protected, South Texas got cleaned up & we never saw another Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico.

Instead with this administration we get the worst of both worlds, but he renamed the Gulf because he's too fucking stupid to understand the concept of "Central America" or just that profoundly insecure about literally everything in general.

So much winning!

Expect utility bills to be much higher this summer.  A bunch of subsidies & incentives that providers were getting for investing in renewables or improving their infrastructure got cut.  Probably going to see more blackouts, water outages (Flint, MI comes to mind), shit like that.  But hey, without all the environmental & workplace safety "red tape" I'm sure it'll all even out, right? Those companies will keep passing their savings on to the consumer without being forced, right?

Certainly won't result in more accidents like the East Palestine fire instead.

Really good read.

The "Chinese workers are better" stuff gave me pause.  Aren't they still routinely using reeducation camp prisoners for their labor? Are the stories about suicide epidemics in iPhone factories just propaganda?  Maybe we should ban for-profit prison labor in the US - it's hard to compete with that.  Am I to feel guilty about not wanting to work 80hr weeks at a subsistence wage?

Another pretty big factor they don't mention as far as outsourced labor & manufacturing:  We have (had?) things like the EPA and OSHA.  In the US you couldn't hire 9 year olds to work in your steel mill for $1 a day & dump all your waste products down the nearest storm drain.  We had priorities beyond wringing the last penny out of everything, we wanted to be able to breathe the air outside.

I guess we can do away with all that in order to compete with some child-labor sneaker factory in Bangladesh, but is that really what we want for ourselves?

But you know what really puzzles me, behind all of this mess?

What was so god damn horribly, terribly wrong that we need to burn it all down and start over?  I'm not saying everything was perfect but this whole "Saving America" bit confuses the hell out of me.  What was the problem exactly? A black man being President? Gay people being allowed to get married and live their lives? Someone couldn't afford their lifestyle of gross conspicuous consumption on credit?  What was the dire emergency that requires a fascist despot to save us? I very much missed that part.

The OT and his minions are doing everything they can to eliminate those pesky agencies and regulations that ensure stuff like clean air and water, and also ensure that children aren't working around meat slicers and table saws.

Beats hell out of me. I guess women, gays, and minorities were obtaining too much power and the status quo white males didn't like it.

Decades of Fox News fear mongering convinced them they were under attack from people that just wanted to be left alone.  "Ahhh!! We can't control their lives! I heard someone speaking Spanish (or maybe Portugese or Tagalog IDK because I'm barely literate in my own language, but they were definitely brown!) I saw a trans person on a beer ad! Ahhhhh! Someone save me from the Radical Left!"

You can tell by their obsession with "toughness" that they're terrified of their own shadows.  Spineless.

Martin Wolf’s “The old global economic order is dead”

Smith's commentary: After the crisis, Wolf was also pumping for serious reforms, promoting the campaign by Mervyn King, Paul Tucker, and Andrew Haldane at the Bank of England. One of their big agenda items amounted to a modern version of Glass Steagall, of separating capital markets trading from traditional banking. They lost after a hard fight to Treasury, which ‘natch was all in for the banksters.
