If Stealers fans wanted Mike Tomlin to just quit and go mumbling away into the night, that migraine headache WR pairing might be the final straw. Now that's funny. Quote

Unless a contract is guaranteed. They won't owe him anything. All contracts, are based on you making the team. They should be able to cut him, anytime they want. And owe him nothing. Quote

They could certainly make more money by fielding a consistent winner and staying in Super Bowl contention, but that comes with some amount of risk. They've got no other source of income to sustain them and families tend to grow exponentially each generation. It makes them extremely risk averse and resistant to change. Why should they be risk averse? They didn't buy the team with money made in other ventures. They inherited a multi-billion dollar money machine. They can do a good or bad job running it but the easiest thing for them would be to stop playing fantasy football with a real team, turn it over to pros and go enjoy the skiing in Gstaad. On 2/1/2025 at 5:47 PM, GoBengals said: and in the third round, its hardly a risk at all. The risk is in the opportunity cost of who else they could have gotten with the pick. A top 100 pick can get you a starting guard or linebacker or safety or running back. Good thing we don't need any of those positions strengthened, right? On 2/1/2025 at 5:47 PM, GoBengals said: here we are again in 2001. there are about 5... maybe 10-15 if you count the "position specialty" ones of scouting agencies who each employ 50-100 scouts, collect the data and sell it to teams. sitting here acting like the eagles or whoever, have 20-45 scouts scouring the country like no one else finding gems like a disney movie, is ridiculous. every team has instant video of every single players every single play, with sortable scenarios, at their finger tips, and 100+ reviews from 100's of scouts they know and trust on said players, its 2025. its a billion dollar industry. and those scouting firms include background checks, private investigators, everything you imagine. paying independant scouts vs having them on the staff leads to the same info and the same results. which is why all 32 teams hit and miss draft picks every single year. i cant understand what bengals fans invision happening in bengals draft prep vs what happens in other teams draft prep. Yes, all teams have access to the video of games played by prospects. But good scouts have connections with college coaches and help their teams avoid mistakes and sometimes even find gems. Remember when the Ravens let a reporter in their draft room one year? He reported them laughing and high fiving when the Bengals used a first round pick on Chris Perry. It would have been nice if the Bengals had known what the Ravens knew about Perry. The Bengals have a bad process for roster management and it hurts the team's chances of success. We're still looking for a Jesse Bates or DJ Reader replacement for instance. Or Tyler Boyd or Eli Apple. On 2/1/2025 at 6:55 PM, T-Dub said: Your position then is that the Bengals are the same as every other team at drafting. No one is any better or worse at it, and there is nothing that can be done to improve. That's kinda crazy to me. Like sure everyone makes mistakes but not everyone fucks off their NFL debut to play video poker. I'm going to maintain that there are levels here. I suppose that leaves us at an impasse. Lets hope the Draft Spirits or whatever shine upon us in a few months, then. 🍻 Yeah, claiming that drafting is equal across the league is nonsense. Some teams do better than others consistently. Unfortunately, the Bengals aren't one of those teams. 1 Quote

No appeals, no press conference, and no community of fans making excuses for me. This guy has millions of dollars & a career as an NFL athlete on the line and can't get out of bed on time? Sorry if my sympathy seems to be lacking. That's because they can find anyone to clean the Grill at McDonalds. Quote

Not exactly James Bond gambling his Aston Martin at the baccarat table. For the record he was "only" guaranteed $1.05M as a 3rd round pick. He'll earn another $4.5M or so if he plays out the next 3 years. Quote

This is where the Bengals go cheap instead of hiring more scouts and personnel professionals. TJ vouches for Burton. Didn't Willie Anderson vouch for Carman? F that crap. Hire some guys that are professionals and have a proven track record. 1 Quote
UncleEarl Posted February 5 Report Posted February 5 I have no problem with the Burton pick. It was a risk for sure, but like others have said, all picks are risks. Risk/reward is a real thing. I wouldn't cut Burton either. Who knows, he may see the light this offseason. BUT....If he pulls any of the crap he was accused of last season...late to meetings, sleeping in meetings, missing practice? Hit the road, kid. 1 Quote

This was a problem during the Carson years too, they sign the QB to a big contract then rather than having a good scouting department that can find players who arent headcases in later rounds that can at least be role players and contribute, or in some cases hit and be starters, they go cheap on scouting and take too many risky guys and have it all blow up in their face. 1 Quote
