I don't get this post at all.

Care to expand, or do you just want to call people
names and say they love losing?

Child Please! 'Hard Knocks' a must-see for Bengal fans
By Ken Paxson | Thursday, August 13, 2009, 12:42 PM

Get ready to hear this term all season long - "Child Please!"

Know what it means? Or at least how Chad Ochocinco defines it? You would if you had watched the debut of HBO's "Hard Knocks" series following the Bengals as they prepare for the 2009 season.

Sorry I can't go into detail about Ocho's new mantra. His explanation during Wednesday's debut of the show isn't fit for anyone under 18, but you can expect to see "Child Please!" T-shirts and listen to Chad "Child Please!" opposing coaches, players and teams all season long.

While Chad was the reason for a couple laugh-out-loud moments - "I am pissed to the height of pissivity" (you had to be there) -"Hard Knocks" hardly gave Ocho the time of day during the first of what will be a 5-part series.

And that's one reason why it's so good.

I don't know how non-Bengal fans will feel about the show. Cincinnati certainly won't draw viewers like last year's team, the Dallas Cowboys. But what I do know is that the show gives a look behind the curtain that I don't think most of us ever thought president and owner Mike Brown would ever allow.

You do get to see Brown in all of his frumpy glory, but "Hard Knocks" producers rightly choose not to focus on the embattled team owner who I'm sure will stay out of the spotlight as much as possible.

It's fascinating to me to watch the banter between offensive and defensive players as they scrimmage. There's nothing funnier than watching Chad fume in silence as safety Chris Crocker calls him "Sugar" and talks smack about shutting down.

It's great fun, but what it really does is shed light on the serious side of football. The first episode highlighted the struggles of players on the cusp of being cut, including fullback J.D. Runnels, who was awakened at 5:30 a.m. and told to hand in his playbook.

Injuries also are a harsh reality in football and it was hard to watch tight end Reggie Kelly as he received the news - his Achilles' tendon was ruptured and he was done for the season. The camera lingered, catching his silence and tears as the trainer walked away.

Sad, but great theater.

There was much, much more and something for all kinds of fans in the hour-long episode. So, if you don't have HBO, sign up or make friends with someone who does for the next 4 weeks. "Hard Knocks" is must-see TV for all Bengal fans.

Posted 8/12/2009 11:26 PM EDT on Cincinnati.com

As a casual Bengals fan, I was pretty impressed with HBO's "Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Cincinnati Bengals" tonight. They provided me with drama, surprises and a few laughs, and that's what I want from a TV show. They surprised me by not featuring some of the obvious stories -- Carson Palmer's elbow, Chris Henry's new attitude, what makes Mike Brown tick (but they did Chad, of course) -- and introduced me to some players I didn't know, like safeties Roy Williams and Chris Crocker.

I was impressed that they went to Alabama to show holdout Andre Smith working out alone... and they were very candid about how his last-minute roster replacement, Gus Parrish from Kent State, just wasn't cutting it.

The focus on tight ends was obvious, with Reggie Kelly's season-ending injury, Ben Utecht getting knocked unconscious and rookie Chase Coffman having to step uip his game instantly.

But here's my question: If NFL Films has a bazillion cameras at Bengals camp, how did they miss injuries to both Kelly and Utecht? We didn't see them until they were flat on their backs on the field!

Another question: Who thought they'd focus on running back J.D. Runnels? I didn't expect that, but I also didn't realize he would get cut so quickly. Now I"ll be reading Joe Reedy's stories closer to see how Chris Pressley does, since "Hard Knocks" has introduced him to fans, and his mother in New Jersey (near NFL Films headquarters).

It was interesting to see the process of training camp -- checking in to rooms, paying extra to rent a TV, etc. -- to see the tight ends meetings (coaches ripping on Coffman, and making him do push-ups) -- and to see some of the lighter moments, like joking that Parrish looked like Randy Jackson. And props to writer Gerry Reimel for describing Chad Ochocinco as an "amatuer linguist." (I'm not a big Chad fan, but I loved him saying he was so p---ed off he was at "the highest level of pisstivity.")

And speaking of language, here's another question: Who would have guessed that viewers would hear the phrase "It is what it is" more times (4) than the f-bomb (3) or sh*t (3) during the hour? (Imagine what Tracy Jones will say about that...)

I had hoped to get to know the assistant coaches better, and maybe that will come in the next episodes since they had to establish Marvin Lewis in the premiere. I'd like to see more of offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski, who takes so much heat for our lack of offense. And it looks like they also plan to focus on rookie USC linebacker Ray Maualuga next week, an obvious but worthy story.

Did you like it? Was it as good as you hoped it would be?

And one last question: What did Pat Barry do for "Hard Knocks" to be the first listed under "special thanks" in the credits? Provide weather forecasts?

From Ken Broo's blog . ..

Here's all I want to see from the Bengals Friday night: Carson Palmer out of the game in one piece. If anything happens to Palmer, this team goes from an 8-8 club to another 4 win season.

8-8 is about it, I'm afraid. Don't get caught up in the hype until you see how the Bengals look playing against somebody other than themselves....

First episode of "Hard Knocks" gets a C+ from the Broo View. The photography was beyond excellent. The story lines were hardly compelling. Perhaps it gets better as the series progresses. But the first episode was hardly an attention grabber....

Jim Lippincott looked a little buffoonish as he went to cut fullback JD Runnells. Lippincott, who is a very nice man, looked like he had the people skills of a drone. I'm hoping it was editing that made him look that way. I'm hoping he tells the editor he didn't appreciate it....

Ditto for trainer Paul Sparling. His treatment of Reggie Kelly, the so called inspirational leader of the Bengals, when he snapped his Achilles tendon was callous. Kelly deserved better treatment. Talk about no bedside manner....

Come on people!!!!!!

Did you see the footage from that coaches meeting that Mike Brown was presiding over? No doubt now who's in charge. And you mean to tell me, the debate over moving a defensive end to tight end was the best NFL Films could come up with? Really?

Well, since BJ Raji has now signed (the #9 overall pick) should it not be easier for the Bengals to come to a deal with Andre Smith? By the way, Smith should have politely declined the opportunity to appear, in abstentia, on Hard Knocks. He had quick feet and a gut that could consume Rhode Island...

If Smith doesn't sign in time to play in the third pre-season game, and we're about a week away from that deadline, he'll be of little help to the Bengals this season....

From C Trent's blog . . .

I thought Hard Knocks was entertaining — not that it’s a shocker, it’s HBO and NFL Films they can make, well, the Bengals interesting.

Of course, my girlfriend noted she was inspired by Mike Brown’s speech. She was also happy to have Dhani Jones in HD.

I’m looking forward to next week because it looks like we’ll get some Jeff FitzGerald, the team’s linebackers coach. FitzGerald is incredibly entertaining and very knowledgeable. He’s one of those guys I learn something about football every time I talk to him.

* I don’t think Hard Knocks showed anything about Mike Brown that will change any minds — in fact, the classroom scene of him running a meeting with the coaching staff only reinforces any perception of him as a meddler without the expertise needed to put together a winning franchise. The TV rental also reinforced any notion of the Browns as penny-pinchers.

That said, I’ve seen some criticism of Katie Blackburn and what she had to say about Andre Smith — that’s when you have to ask yourself what else you expect someone in her position to say during a negotiation?

* Former Bengal John Thornton has a nice review of Hard Knocks. And I agree with him about Ray Oliver. Dude’s hilarious. John thought the part right before he blew the horn was the funniest, I liked right after.

That or Carson Palmer telling Antonio Chatman that if he dropped a pass, he’d kick him in the balls.

Ken Broo made some dumb observations. and I'm pretty sure that Georgetown College would be making the $$$ off of TV rentals, not Mike Brown.
Ken Broo is not very good at his job. Which is pretty par for the course for this area. But honestly, he is probably the least interesting and insightful of the bunch.
